“You have to constantly innovate, and you have to not press against what is coming. Embrace it and be a part of it,” said Alexandra Cooper, host of famed podcast “Call Her Daddy.”

Cooper joined Julie McNamara, Spotify’s head of global podcast studios, at the Variety Studio presented by Canva at Cannes Lions to discuss what makes her podcast resonate with fans.

“She is exactly the kind of creator we want to work with,” McNamara about Cooper coming to Spotify. “She’s also really a unicorn, she’s one of a kind — but she is hungry to know her audience, to connect with her audience, to build community. She genuinely loves them.”

Gaining this trust and rapport with her audience was not an easy feat. The relationship Cooper has created with her fans was done through honesty and openness, which isn’t easy for everyone to do. “I have shared every single bit of my life quite literally on this show, and I’m never afraid to be asked to question,” said Cooper.

“I’m always willing to talk about anything. If I’m asked it, I’m going to talk about it. And I think that has shown through in years where I’ve grown with my audience,” said Cooper. “These people have essentially grown up with me, and that fosters a community that is dedicated and committed, and wants to be a part of something.”

McNamara talked about the possibilites this brings for creators in other mediums, like musicians, who join Cooper on the podcast.

“Because we’re such a global platform and we have half a billion people on Spotify, there’s a lot of great connections that we can make. And hoping to now help all kinds of creators have their podcast discovered and amplified and help them monetize in the way that Alex is such a great model for,” McNamara said.

She hopes that others can be inspired by Cooper to use Spotify as a tool to launch their career. They both want Spotify to benefit creators just as much as it benefits from them.

“Our hope is that every podcast creator feels like, ‘I can get my podcast discovered on Spotify. I can monetize on Spotify,’” said McNamara. “And another thing that Alex and I have been discussing with her new company, and she’s so entrepreneurial and she approaches this with no fear. She’s really excited to look at AI opportunities and look at opportunities to mentor others.”
