Before the 2020 Emmy nominations are announced on June 28, Variety senior editors Danielle Turchiano and Michael Schneider are taking a deep dive into the best comedy category and dissecting the most eligible shows for this edition of Variety’s “Awards Heat” video series presented by Apple TV Plus.

“Fleabag” may have won the prestigious award in 2019, but the series wrapped its final season last year, leaving room for other top contenders like “Dead to Me” and “Insecure” (both of which have never been nominated in this category) as possible winners this time around.

Additionally, although Turchiano and Schneider predict “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is a sure nominee this year, their personal top picks include “Schitt’s Creek,” which aired its sixth and final season in April, and “Better Things,” which recently got renewed for a fifth season this past May.

Other possible contenders are “Space Force,” “The Kominsky Method” and “The Good Place.”

Last week, the TV Academy announced the number of nominations in the drama and comedy series categories will expand from seven to eight this year due to the increase in submissions.

Variety’s “Awards Heat” presented by Apple TV Plus takes a look at the Emmy competition, as Schneider and Turchiano break down eligible contenders in each category leading up to the Emmys. Other episodes available to view include drama lead actress and comedy lead actor.

The Primetime Emmy telecast, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air on Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Information about how the program will be broadcast due to the coronavirus pandemic is coming soon.
