When Jonathan Groff went to reprise his role as Kristoff in “Frozen II,” he was a little uncertain of his performance.
“I remember the first day of recording like, ‘Do I remember how to do this with my voice?’” Groff told Variety at the D23 Expo.
The Tony-nominated actor did, indeed, get his groove back, adding, “The minute I got back into the room, it felt like I was home again with that team of people, using our imaginations and laughing a lot, and it’s just been such a blast.”
Groff joins returning cast members including Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell and Josh Gad in the sequel to Disney’s 2013 hit animated film “Frozen.” He has also been starring in the Netflix series “Mindhunter,” centered on the FBI’s behavioral science unit during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The series is executive produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron.
And despite the show’s serious subject matter (the second season focused partly on the Atlanta child murders that occurred between 1979 and 1981), Groff revealed that he and co-star Holt McCallany do a fair amount of singing on-set. McCallany’s mother was the late Julie Wilson, a Tony-winning singer.
“We sang a duet together a couple years ago at [Holt’s] mom’s memorial. He is, beyond being a phenomenal actor, also a beautiful singer,” said Groff. “And he was the one who was singing the most on-set, I would say.”
