At the end of Season 1 of “Hacks,” veteran comedian Deborah Vance, played by Jean Smart, announces she will be leaving her cushy Vegas lifestyle to go on tour with a brand new hour.
But while “Hacks” Season 2 will center around Deborah’s new standup act, the series creators say there is much more to explore with its Emmy-nominated cast of characters.
“Obviously, [Deborah’s] show is going to be a driving force of Season 2. But [‘Hacks’] is about these characters’ lives offstage,” co-creator and co-showrunner Jen Statsky said in the Variety Streaming Room, presented by HBO Max. “And it’s not so much what jokes they’re telling, it’s why they’re telling these jokes, specifically for Deborah. So, certainly we will deal with [Deborah’s] show, but we are also thinking about their lives offstage, because that’s where the growth and real juicy stuff lives for us.”
Co-creator, co-showrunner and director Lucia Aniello said that while Ava’s (Hannah Einbinder) angry resignation email — sent to Deborah in a state of intoxication — can help “reset” the comedic duo’s love-hate relationship, they’re looking to recreate Einbinder and Smart’s “natural rhythm” in a “fresh new way” for Season 2.
“[Her new hour] bombed, but there’s something there. So her having to get on the road and start back from the beginning is going to be a challenge,” Aniello said. “And in terms of Deborah and Ava’s relationship, we do of course have the email looming over Ava’s head.”
Confessing she has “no idea” yet what will happen in Season 2, Smart said she hopes the show keeps the boomer-versus-millennial spirit alive.
“Now that there is more of a comfort level between the two women in particular, and a little bit of trust and a little affection, I just hope that we can keep still what we all fell in love with at first, which was the fact that they were from two different worlds, and those generational differences,” Smart said.
