Xanthe Wells and Judy Lee are the driving forces behind the creative and marketing efforts at Pinterest, respectively. At the Cannes Lions Variety Studio, presented by Canva, they revealed that Gen Z plays a key role in their strategies.

“A lot of the inspiration that we have for our activation at Cannes is all around Gen Z,” said Lee, director of Pinterest’s experiential marketing. “Gen Z is one of the fastest growing audiences for our platform right now, so we’re taking hints from Gen Z.”

Lee, too, dished that manifestation is one of the top “trends” that the Pinterest brand has been leaning into. “Gen Z thinks of Pinterest as a manifestation app,” Lee explained. “Many people are familiar with Pinterest as this place where people are planning weddings and planning their lives. But it also has endless possibilities where you can plan your hairstyles, what tattoos you like — it’s a source of visual inspiration.”

As the vice president of Pinterest’s global creative, Wells believes the platform has a “front-row seat” to new and emerging trends as they emerge. “We see the search volume uptick. It’s absolutely amazing, creatively,” she added.

What modern trend is Wells keen to learn more about Artificial intelligence. “I know everyone’s talking about it, but this is the biggest new crayon in the crayon box that we’ve ever had,” Wells raved.

Though she acknowledges that there are “some downsides” and that ultimately “ideas always have to come from humans,” AI is a great tool that will be able to “create amazing work faster.” “The upside is potentially more important and more interesting, we just have to learn how to use it,” said Wells.
