Over the years, the topic of masculinity within fashion has sparked a notable discourse. While there seems to be lingering societal norms on what is traditionally deemed ‘masc’ or attractive, the conventional definitions and archetypes have undergone a re-evaluation of sorts. In its place is an evolved group of men, all-rounders who have not only made their mark in this industry but have also succeeded in other fields, unhindered by age or appearance.
At least this is the case for senior model Arun Rosiah. Soon to turn 60, Arun has seen and done it all. Currently working as a flexi-adjunct physical education teacher at a junior college and freelancing as a personal trainer in his spare time, the Singapore born-and-raised father of three is in peak physical shape, comfortable and in his element as he graces this Vogue Man feature.

Shares Arun of his introduction to the modelling scene: “It all happened after I took part in the Manhunt Singapore 2021/2022 pageant competition as the oldest contestant. I came in as a runner-up in the open category, and it was from then on that I got the opportunity to do some projects.” To date, Arun has walked local runway shows and done commercial shoots, the most notable one being a video advertisement for NTUC Income Insurance.
Arun is thankful for the opportunities presented to him, and looks to modelling as an avenue to help him stay young and alert. “It is very exciting and is a lot of hard work at the same time. I am appreciative of everyone who works tirelessly behind the scenes to glam me up,” he shares amicably. “I aim to rise to the challenge and pride myself in giving the producers and clients my all.”
Despite his spurts of success within the industry, Arun is aware of the stigmas that older models face. “It is apparent everywhere, even outside fashion, with many of the most prominent sports, watch and car brands preferring to feature young faces. I hope that with more senior models entering the industry, it can help to break the notion that modelling is a job only for the young.” He points out that a large target demographic for the luxury market is older clients, who may respond better to campaigns and content that feature older models.

In November 2015, Arun was diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer. What started as minor inconsistencies with his diet and bowel movements subsequently affected his daily life, with drastic weight loss and vertigo spells that eventually resulted in him having to take time off work.
Arun shares: “I felt helpless, my energy levels were low and I was constantly in pain while undergoing the various treatments. It was a test of my mental resilience and it was what spurred the decision to channel my energy towards exercise.”
Despite the discomfort and exhaustion following multiple rounds of intensive radiation and chemotherapy, Arun attributes his perseverance and inner strength to the countless people who helped him along the way. “I couldn’t have done any of it without my wife and kids, who never saw me differently despite my physical limitations. My brothers-in-law too; they are the epitome of calm and courageous males who prioritise family above all.” He also acknowledges the strong support system of hospital staff, physiotherapists and counsellors who aided him both physically and mentally throughout his recovery.

Now officially eight years in remission, Arun looks back at that period as a turning point in his life. “My battle with cancer taught me empathy towards others,” he admits. “I was egotistical and judgemental before, always putting myself first whenever I did anything, and it wasn’t until I needed to rely on the help of my loved ones did my perception and outlook towards people (and life) change.” He adds that this calamity has widened his view on things, which has, in turn, helped him become a better husband and father. “My patience has grown. I now place more emphasis on relating and communicating with my kids.”
Looking ahead, Arun is optimistic about what the future holds for the next generation of men. He wishes for the male youth of today to be more selfless and to be willing to embrace vulnerability. “Showing vulnerability is a sign of strength, and speaks to the emotional intelligence and character of a person.”
He also aspires to see more innovators and dreamers pursue their interests, becoming trailblazers who are unafraid to stand out from the crowd. “Don’t give in to peer pressure and blindly follow the masses. Instead, be strong with your convictions to excel even if your individual path may appear challenging. After all, it is the ones who stand tall and unbreakable in the face of adversities who always come back stronger.”
