On the Cover: Gregory Manchess

Gregory Manchess is an illustrator who is extremely conscious of the responsibility he has to the author, the writing and the readers. How much should we see on the cover? Greg strives to create an image which forces the viewer to think about  the events immediately proceeding as well as those about to unfold. It’s an image which invites the viewer to participate and that type of interaction only increases the tension and drama of the story. It’s a moment between events. Blink and you just might miss it… but, not with Greg Manchess.

Our cameras were rolling when illustrator Gregory Manchess stopped by SFBC’s New York office to show us his recently completed painting for the second edition of E.E. Knight’s Vampire Earth series. He talked to us about his amazing artwork for both covers of E.E. Knight’s “Enter the Wolf” and “Way of the Bear.”

LIsten to Greg explain how we approached the first two omnibus editions in relation to pacing the storytelling and see his art come to life from concept sketches to completion.
