I need help! I was never really into the Hawk legacy, but they were given a decent amount of face time on Blackest Night and currently Brightest day and it got me interested.
Where do you think should I start reading the series or what arcs would you recommend?
Wow. My first recommendation request. I’m worried, but here goes!
My recommendation depends on two factors: your interest and availability. How would you be reading him? Would you be looking for trades, volumes, or sneaking it off the internet?
And, how much do you want to read of him? He’s a great character, to me, but has a long history of being—primarily—a ‘part’ of an organisation (JSA, JLA) and you may prefer him as ‘one of the group’ rather than just himself.
Now, if you were to be looking for TPBs, I would say to maybe start at the beginning of the 2002-2006 run. Now, it’s not the Hawkman which everyone is probably most familiar with, and I would not consider it the best Hawkman, however I reason that you’re more likely to find a copy of a run that started 8 years ago than you are to find one from 1993, or 1986. It would also get you familiar with Hawkman and Hawkgirl (Although, not with the typical Hawkman - Hawkgirl dynamic).
My best recommendation would probably be Justice Society of America, though. It started in 2007, but is ongoing, and would probably be your best bet.
If you were to use the internet, well … The Hawkman’s your oyster, and I’d keep the recommendations above for modern Hawkman, but also maybe point you to the silver age Hawkman (1964, 1986) - I’d focus on the modern things, but it’s nice to branch backwards if you have the means.
I still consider myself relatively unlearned in Hawkman history—I fancy that a JLA-buff would know more than I do—but maybe the above will help get you started!
And, if anyone has specific questions about Hawkman or Hawkwoman / Hawkgirl, do feel free to ask. Chances are that if I don’t know the answer from the top of my head, I can find it out for you!
