Some British police officers are being a bit too social on Facebook, and sometimes inappropriately so: 150 officers have been disciplined, at least two fired and seven forced to quit because of comments or photos they shared on the social networking site between 2008 and 2010.

The information was released to the Press Association, which filed a Freedom of Information Act request for documents from a government investigation about police corruption. Among the findings: There is a "significant blurring" between officers' personal and professional lives on social networking sites such as Facebook, and that officers' activities on such sites may need to be monitored from now on.

The officers in question — from 41 of 43 police forces in England and Wales — used Facebook to share information about police operations, or indicate they helped attack members of the public during protests, and in some cases got quite personal, posting inappropriate photos or harassing former colleagues.

"We found a significant blurring between people's professional lives on social networking sites and their private lives which may be in the public domain and private lives which probably should remain extremely private," said Roger Baker, who led the investigation for Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The newspaper noted that one officer was fined three days' pay "after he called for violence against suspects in custody."

Under a video of a youth with a knife being tackled by officers in a police station, he wrote: "Look at this stupid c***, hope he gets a good f****** shoeing in the cells."

A total of 187 complaints were made "against officers over their use of Facebook, with nine officers being given final written warnings, 47 given written warnings and one given a formal warning," the newspaper said. "A further 88 were subject to management action, received guidance or words of advice, while 32 complaints were either withdrawn, found to be unsubstantiated or led to no further action."

The government report, called "Without Fear Or Favor: A Review Of Police Relationships," also noted that it's not just the lower ranks of officers who need to be more careful on Facebook.

"Any lack of clarity felt by staff is not helped by the example set by some senior officers who include what might be considered questionable force-related content or personal opinion in their own messaging."

A survey by a UK-based divorce website shows that Facebook figures prominently in one-third of divorce petitions, an increase of 13 percent from two years ago.

Of course, Divorce-Online is in the business of dealing and profiting from the breakup of marriages, so take the results as you will, but the blog post describes how 5,000 petitions were reviewed recently, as in 2009, and 33 percent of them contained "Facebook."

The top three reasons Facebook was cited in these petitions:

• Inappropriate messages to members of the opposite sex.
• Separated spouses posting nasty comments about each other.
• Facebook friends reporting spouse’s behavior.

So, not only are people using Facebook to hook up with lost loves and make new ones, but they're also using their virtual walls to wage public relations wars with their soon-to-be ex-spouses.

“Social networking has become the primary tool for communication and is taking over from text and email in my opinion," said Mark Keenan, founder and CEO of Online Legal Services Limited, the parent company of Divorce-Online. "If someone wants to have an affair or flirt with the opposite sex then it's the easiest place to do it. Also the use of Facebook to make comments about ex-partners to friends has become extremely common with both sides using Facebook to vent their grievances against each other. People need to be careful what they write on their walls as the courts are seeing these posts being used in financial disputes and children cases as evidence.”

In the U.S., Facebook has even more clout in divorce proceedings. In 2010, the 1,600-member American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (which focuses on the end of matrimony, as it were) cited a survey that linked Facebook to one in five divorces, with 81 percent of those lawyers focusing on social media as the new affair hotbed. And the hottest of all was Facebook, with 66 percent of those AAML sources mentioning it specifically for evidence of marital discord and misconduct.

In September, a Connecticut judge ordered a divorcing couple to hand over each other's Facebook passwords to aid the discovering process in legal proceedings that included a custody battle.

Of course, on the other end of the spectrum are those who don't blame Facebook, as it is just the latest medium by which the unfaithful carry out their transgressions. People, they say, will always find a way to cheat. It's about establishing boundaries both spouses will respect. As an article on DadsDivorce.com puts it, "It’s not fair to blame Facebook or Internet dating sites because they are just the vehicle — not the driver."

As 2011 ends, Google+ is poised to cross the 100 million user threshold by February, a feat that took Facebook four years to do.

Avid Google+ watcher and Ancestry.com founder Paul Allen (not to be confused with the Microsoft co-founder) has become something of an unofficial tracking source for G+ since his prediction early on in July that the then-newborn social network would surpass 10 million within two weeks. 

In a recent post (on G+, naturally), his forecast sees G+ with 400 million users by the end of 2012. His research shows 625,000 users signing up to G+ every day and already past 62 million. But he thinks that rate is going to go up, because if it stays the way it is now, there will be only about 293 million users at the end of next year. Only! But at this rate, 100 million will join by Feb. 25 and 200 million by Aug. 3.

To spur that optimism, he pulls out this stat, which is actually quite a jolt, if it's anywhere near accurate: Nearly a quarter of all G+ users joined in December. Maybe that's due to some recent improvements, such as editing streams, the debut of G+ Pages and enhancements to Hangouts. There was also a big spike in G+ traffic when it opened up to the public, beyond private invitations, in September.

But a 60 percent decrease in traffic right after that tempered at least some of that enthusiasm.

Now though, the outlook on G+ is bullish again. 

A recent comScore report on social networking actually upped G+'s numbers to 65 million around the world, or 5 percent of the global social networking audience.  

Chitika Insights, the "independent research division" of the online advertising network, also saw significant upticks in the past three months, as you can see from this graph, using this methodology:

The graph above shows activity index for Google+ between September and November 2011. The highest level of activity observed receives a value of 100, and the other data points are simply a function thereof. The arrows represent the percentage increase in activity witnessed between month to month data sets, all of which were sampled in the second week of each respective month.

Chitika told us that between September and November, Google+ "saw a 118 percent increase in overall online activity. From September to October Google+ posted the biggest growth figures (55 percent), followed by a growth in online activity of 41 percent between October and November."

The company, which has kept tabs on G+ for awhile, says that this growth may be due to several key factors:

• Google has been successfully integrating Google+ across its wide range of services (Android, Google Apps, Search)
• Google has been heavily advertising Google+ across different channels including television spots and online placements, hoping to connect with a  main-stream audience
• Google has remained dedicated to increasing the functionality and accessibility of Google+ to the public and has plans for rapid releases of new features over the course of 2012

Mind you, Google+ still has a long way to go before it gets anywhere near the 800 million currently on Facebook. But at the same time in its history, at six months old, in 2004, Facebook barely had 1 million users.

And right out of the gate, G+'s turbo-charged entry into the social media sphere blew everyone else away, attaining 20 million users in less than a month, a milestone that took Facebook more than three years to do.

But let's remember: Facebook and Twitter and other pioneers had to build up an audience in which social networking wasn't the norm yet, where only a select few were using Friendster or MySpace. Google+ has the advantage of debuting in a time when social networking dominates the time spent online.

As 2011 winds down, one thing seems destined for more connections in 2012: social networking, with sites that reach 1.2 billion users, 82 percent of the world’s online population. A recent report has the potential of blowing any doubts away about the influence of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others of its ilk with the revelation that social networking accounts for nearly 1 in every 5 online minutes.

The global Web analytics company comScore just released the report, "It's a Social World: Top 10 Need-to-Knows About Social Networking and Where It's Headed." According to it, Facebook rules the rest, reaching "more than half of the world's global audience (55 percent)" and having accounted for "approximately 3 in every 4 minutes spent on social networking sites and 1 in every 7 minutes spent online around the world."

Its world dominance is profound, with only seven countries where it doesn't have the largest audience in this category: Brazil, Japan, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Vietnam and China, some of which currently block the site.

Right along with Facebook, Twitter is a force to be reckoned with that "reaches 1 in 10 Internet users worldwide to rank among the top social networks, and posted an impressive growth rate of 59 percent over the past year." But its Chinese equivalent, Sina Weibo, posted the highest growth at 181 percent since October 2010.

The report also breaks down social networking's reach into different age groups, and reveals that the group with the biggest gain is the 55 and older set, which showed that nearly 80 percent are connected through such sites now, up from a little over 70 percent in July 2010. But, younger people still tend to spend the most time on social media, with the 15- to 24-year-old women spending 8.6 hours on average (1.1 hours more than their male counterparts).

And more people are using their phones to reach those sites: "In October 2011, nearly one-third (32 percent) of the total U.S. mobile population age 13 and older reported accessing social networking sites on their phone at least once in the past month." Interaction goes up even higher for smartphone users: 64 percent "reported accessing social networking sites once in the previous month and nearly 40 percent reported doing so almost every day." The top two activities they do on the go shouldn't come as any surprise: reading posts from personal friends and posting status updates. 

Google+ does get a mention in the report as a potential "disrupter" to the social network world order, with its 65 million global visitors, or 5 percent of the global social networking audience. The report makes some cautious predictions about where it may go:

While this early adoption bodes well for Google+, whether or not the network can sustain this growth and a strong level of engagement among users will be better indicators of its success in the future. Google+ might emerge as a social networking leader in its own right in the years to come, but exactly how big it will be remains to be seen.

Facebook's Chat feature is great and all, but it always seemed to lack any truly amazing emoticons. That's not a problem anymore though, because the social network decided to give us the ability to turn just about any photo into a chat emoticon.

I say "just about" because you are limited to images which are used as the profile photo of a person, group or company — though he, she or it doesn't have to be a friend of yours.

Once you've gotten your brain wrapped around that limitation, here's what you have to do in order to use any available image as an emoticon:

1. Go to a profile (or page) which uses the photo you want as its profile image.
2. Take a close look at the profile (or page) URL. Make note of the profile ID (this could be a custom username or a long string of numbers).
3. Stick that profile ID between double brackets while chatting or messaging people on Facebook.
4. Watch the profile ID (and the double brackets) get converted into the corresponding image as soon as you send a message to someone.

This means that if you want to use a photo of teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, you could type "[[JustinBieber]]" into a message. (The "JustinBieber" text corresponds to the profile ID of his official Facebook page.)

If you wanted a very basic smilie face, you could type "[[322080934472296]]" into a message. (This profile ID corresponds to a test page I've set up while writing another post.)

Simple, no?

If you're at a loss as to which silly images to use as emoticons, the folks at TechCrunch have a little list of profile IDs to get you started. But be careful: Someone could easily change the profile images corresponding to those profile IDs at any time and leave you a bit embarrassed — so be sure to check whether a profile's main image is still what you want to use before typing its ID into a chat.

For the third straight year, "Facebook" was the top searched term in the U.S., followed by "youtube" and "Facebook login." Why, do you ask, would those be searched for, rather than websites visited?

Well, we're lazy, for one thing. "Navigational searches dominated the top search results as users typed in terms versus typing in the URL in the browser bar," said Simon Bradstock, general manager of Experian Hitwise, in a press release about the firm's findings.

"When combined, common search terms for Facebook — e.g., facebook and facebook.com — accounted for 3.48 percent of all searches in the United States among the top 50 terms, which represents a 33 percent increase compared with 2010," Experian Hitwise said. "YouTube terms accounted for 1.36 percent, representing a 21 percent increase compared with 2010. Google terms (including YouTube) accounted for 1.59 percent — an increase of 27 percent compared with 2010. Yahoo terms accounted for 0.59 percent— an increase of 15 percent compared with 2010."

Among the new terms that entered the "top  50" search terms for the year: addicting games, amazon.com, chase online, cnn, face, facebook sign-up, pandora and twitter.

Here are some of Experian Hitwise's other lists for 2011:

Top-visited websites: Dingdingding: Yes, Facebook again, and for the second year, with 10.29 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November. That's a 15 percent increase over 2010. Google.com was second, with 7.70 percent of visits, then YouTube (3.17 percent), Yahoo! Mail (2.95 percent) and Yahoo! (2.47 percent).

Top public figure searches: Oooh 'Baby': Justin Bieber was No. 1, followed by Casey Anthony, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez and Charlie Sheen.

Top personalities searches (from sites focused on celebrities and stars): "Wedding bell blues" for Kim "follow your heart" Kardashian, then Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Robert Pattinson.

Top searched for music artists/bands: We were "gaga" for Lady Gaga, then Justin Beiber, Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Chris Brown.

Top TV show searches: We worshipped "American Idol, followed by "The Young and the Restless," "Dora the Explorer, "Dancing with the Stars" and "Days of Our Lives."

Yes, those were the days of our lives, via search, in 2011.

In the next year, as if your News Feed isn't already cluttered enough, Facebook will now add sponsored ads into the mix.

That's right, if you like a Facebook page, the News Feed will generate a message every time you mention the "liked" brand or business. This shows up your News Feed as well as your friends'.

They also appear as "Sponsored Stories" on the right column of your Facebook pages, "where you may be more likely to discover new things that your friends are interested in." These work similar to other ads, it seems, except that your name will appear in your friends' feed, to better catch their attention.

As the video on the sponsored stories Facebook page explains, friends are likely to be at least somewhat more influential than others in money-spending decisions. (Though others may balk at having their friends — or themselves — co-opted for advertising purposes.)

TechCrunch says that there will be no more than one sponsored story in a News Feed per day, so that should assuage some clamor.

If, on the other hand, you wish to advertise your own branded page, Facebook will walk you through the steps to create a sponsored story, letting you figure out what your maximum budget will be, based on clicks you expect to get from it. There are several different kinds of sponsored stories, as seen in this guide.

To add to the argument that these kinds of ads work, there are reports that show click-through rates have gone up. TBG Digital produced the "2011 Global Facebook Advertising Report," which examined 255 billion impressions across 216 clients advertising on Facebook in 192 countries in the third quarter of this year. In that report, there was an 18.5 percent increase in click-through rates across five major markets from the second quarter of this year to the third quarter.

The report attributes the increased effectiveness of ads to sponsored story ads, based on those click-through rates and the more targeted means of reaching consumers by age, gender and interests.

Facebook for Android update, with Timeline

Even though Facebook for Android came out later than Facebook for Apple, the Android app — like the mobile OS itself — has taken the lead over its iPhone/iPad counterpart.

AppData documented the rise in Facebook for Android's daily users, which culminated in this week's technical knockout with 58.8 million daily active users, vs. Facebook for iPhone's 57.6 million. (These are, by the way, the official mobile apps made by Facebook, not third-party ones.)

Of course, considering the increasing ubiquity of Android devices and downloads, it shouldn't come as too much of a shock to anyone that it's on top, especially since it's a free download.

It was never a question of if  Facebook for Android would gain more users, but rather, when it would surpass the iPhone Facebook users. Just this past week, it added 1.3 million users. Consider that about a month ago, on Nov. 19, Facebook for Android had a little over 53 million daily active users.

In contrast, Facebook for iPhone added only 300,000 daily active users in the past week, and during the same month duration only gained 2.5 million daily active users.

On a monthly active user basis, Facebook for iPhone is still ahead, with 99.5 million vs. Facebook for Android's 86.1 million. But again, Android picked up 1.6 million monthly active users in the past 7 days, showing a faster rate of additions than Facebook for iPhone, which only gained 500,000 monthly active users in the same time period.

The latest update to the app, released on Android Market Dec. 15, aligns it with the Timeline changes on Facebook, which is also reflected in the most recent Facebook for iPhone update. Other improvements include: one-press navigation to groups, apps, pages and settings; zoom on friends' photo tags; and faster notifications.

In a recent Nielsen report, Facebook is second only to the Android Market as the most used app on Androids.

Facebook is a lifeline for military families in touch with loved ones stationed away from home, but it also can be precarious if the "wrong" things appear. A new "social media guide" by Facebook and Blue Star Families provides counsel on what to say, and what not to say, on the social networking site.

Blue Star Families was formed three years ago by military spouses "to raise the awareness of the challenges of military family life with our civilian communities and leaders." As social networking has grown — and Internet controversies have arisen such as the pending case of Bradley Manning, the Army intelligence analyst charged with leaking secret U.S. data to WikiLeaks — Blue Star Families has become a key resource.

The group worked with Facebook to develop the guide, which is quite extensive, and can be viewed online, as well as downloaded. There's information about privacy settings and security.

Under "Maintain operational security (OpSec)," service members and families are reminded to stay silent, as most have been, when sharing certain information on Facebook:

Today's military families and spouses are kept far more informed about troop movements, unit locations, unit activities and more than in years past but have less training on how to maintain OpSec. Before posting information on Facebook, it's crucial for your safety as well as the safety of your service member and his or her unit that you remember OpSec....

Be mindful of the following:

• Unit activities, while deployed or at home, are fluid and change rapidly. The information you have might be incorrect or outdated.
• Facebook posts about a service member's activities (troop movements, homecomings, deployment dates) violate OpSec ... but they may additionally put you in a vulnerable position since they signal to others that you are home alone.

fPrivacy Chrome extension adds a bar to the top of a Facebook app permission screen, so you can fine tune access

Facebook apps often ask for a lot more access to you and your information than they need, such as posting stuff in your name, or accessing information when you're not online. Now there's a free Chrome extension, fPrivacy, that's supposed to keep them from running wild.

Add this extension from Chrome's Web store and up pops a bar above the authorization dialog box when you're adding a new Facebook app. It lets you uncheck the boxes of the permissions you're not comfortable with and wipe them out before you even agree to including the app in your Facebook family.

Of course, the creator, Chad Selph, says this may break some apps that might not function well without all those permissions. At that point, you can re-add those permissions (they're sure to pop up, anyway) or remove the app entirely if it gets too annoying.

For all the apps you've already installed, ones that you might have given permissions to already, there is a way to undo the carte blanche to your data. Best of all, you can do it without using the Chrome extension.

Hit the drop-down menu next to the Home tab on the upper right corner of any Facebook page you're logged into, choose Privacy Settings and then, under Apps and Websites, hit Edit Settings. Go into each one to remove whatever isn't required.

Facebook's own process is cumbersome, but if you value this sort of thing, it's worth it. Here's hoping that with this Chrome extension on board, future additions should be easier to control.

Facebook recently made Timeline available to everyone. And now the social network's official iPhone app is being updated to offer support for this shiny and new feature.

You can download the latest Facebook for iPhone app — version 4.1, in case you're wondering — through the Apple App Store as soon as you're done reading this blog post. Once you do that, you'll face a small pile of rather significant changes.

Timelines, Subscribers, and Subscriptions can now be viewed using the iPhone app, Lists can be managed from your device, photo uploads are quicker, and notifications look just a little bit neater.

Oh, and the whole app seems to run more smoothly — which is a pretty big deal considering how quirky and temperamental prior versions could be at times.

To be fair, this Facebook photo features two Americans, one of which is me.

British Facebook users are under the influence of old demon alcohol in 76 percent of the photos in which they are tagged, according to a recent survey. More than half said they sure wouldn't want their employers or co-workers to see those photos. And yet, two-thirds of survey respondents said they'd intentionally tagged their "friends" in embarrassing photos to make sure other Facebook friends got a look.

So the big take away from this survey seems to be that three quarters of British Facebook users are lousy friends.

Sure, only 8 percent of survey respondents said they'd been tagged in such photos on Facebook that might cause them to get in trouble with their employers or even lose their job. But nearly all survey participants (93 percent) said they'd actively untagged their names from photos they found "too embarrassing." 

That's some pretty lax observance of the Golden Rule, IMHO.

It might really make me question the superfluous "u" spellings of our former rulers across the pond, if my own self-hating xenophobia didn't make me suspect that we Americans are way more obnoxious when it comes to blatant attempts to humiliate our closest compatriots via tagged photos on Facebook. 

Alas, I just don't have the science to back that up.

The survey — conducted by photo website MyMemory.com — is restricted to British Facebook users, and only 1,781 of them at that. With such a humble polling pool, we are not even assured how accurately it applies to the more than 30 million Facebook users in the UK.

Such a survey does remind us however — especially during holiday party season when drunkenness has been known to occur — how it's important to remain vigilant about who's posting what about you on Facebook. Now, it used to be you didn't have much control over who tagged you in photos. Over the summer however, Facebook rolled out new privacy settings that allow you to approve who can tag photos of you, as well as who can see those photos.

More than 50 percent of the survey respondents said their settings allowed Facebook friends to view photos tagged with their name, and a quarter said their tagged photos were set to "Public."  One in 10 however said they blocked their friends from seeing photos in which they are tagged. 

You can change the "Public" default settings on tagged photos by clicking the drop down arrow at the top right of your Facebook page, choosing "Privacy Settings" and on that page, scroll down to "How Tags Work" and click "Edit Settings."
