The plan! (Made by yours truly and niyx)
12pm - Meet at York railway station. It looks like quite a few people will be travelling in, so this is probably the best place to meet.
- Weather permitting, off to the Museum Gardens for a picnic! We've got some fun ice breakers and games planned so that hopefully even the most shy redditors will feel at home. And of course, plenty of food and drinks. Please bring some snacks to share so that there's more to go around :)
- Thinking of going on a short city wall walk followed by tea and scones at one of York's cafes so that we feel proper British.
- Move a little bit towards one of the riverfront pubs for some chilled out drinks. It's a great location and there's tons of pubs so we can have our pick.
- Dinner somewhere, to be decided. We're thinking of English pub food but this really depends on how many people are coming. So please hit attending if you are!
- Finishing with a pub crawl! We'll have a route planned but if you want to go your own way then feel free to do so :)
We're also holding a competition over at r/York for some Reddit York meetup badges for everyone who joins. They will look awesome.
A prize or two for winners of the games!
Want to help out with the meetup? Here's what we need:
- Restaurant / pub suggestions
- Design a badge for the meetup, yours might get printed and given out!
- Bring snack food to the event. There's a long list of suggestions over at r/York if you're stuck for ideas.
- Anything else you can think of :)
@Chiiders Great idea and I'd love the cinema to be a part of things, however, remember that this is a social event to get to know fellow redditors and the cinema isn't the best of places to sociallise with strangers - Bowling would be good if people don't object too much... Plus I'm sure we could argue a good enough discount if we get a few of us lined up ;-)
@Niyx i agree with that, but the legends is a good place for food. :)
@Chiiders Problem being that if we do manage to attract people from further afield than York, Clifton Moor might be a problem, will depend on who we reel in and how they'll feel bussing around a bit.
Of course, we can always have some people drinking tea and eating scones in York and a selection of the more adventurous souls in Clifton Moor enjoying cheap pub grub ;-)
@niyx far away! Haha I'm out the way (pocklington). It's not to bad I know what you mean though think my American friend who is over may come join us. But I'm happy doing anything. Quite looking forward to this. Defintly bringing my camera. :).
@Chiiders Distance is more to do with where you're coming from I guess, Pock is still my idea of close, I'm there tonight in fact!
American friend would be great, as long as he gets the idea of random strangers meeting up and discussing cats (unless he is a redditor!) - I have friends hopefully coming up from London and Derby to attend so at least we will have a bit of a mix in the group.
As long as we create a balance of convenience and things to do we should be fine... I hope. chromiselda and I will be talking through what options we have this Friday so we should be able to get the balance right.
Figured out how to comment, so just to say to count me in! I live in Hull, so my vote is for something easily accessible by train but aside from that I'm happy to do anything!
@Charleyyy That's great news and welcome on board. We're still discussing the details but meeting at the train station seems logical ;-)
@nixy haha awsome. Shame I'm not. Would have come for a drink haha. Hitting up Sheffield tonight whoop whoop. Haha.
I would rather meet up in town myself, but I'm up for anything. Wait, are gingers allowed?
iirc the train station is on the right side of town for clifton, but it's still quite a way away. i was gonna suggest one of the places on hudson street, which is just inside the city walls heading left from the station. it's mainly foreign places there but it's really close to micklegate if anyone fancies drinks afterwards
I reckon that one of the few things that York has going for it is its selection of good pubs! I think a pub crawl round town is the best way to socialise and have a good time. Places like Pivni, House of Trembling Madness, York Brewery pubs etc. And a pub dinner or decent meal could be fit in around this.
@Ooer Of course gingers are allowed! Please come in your masses. We're thinking of meeting at the railway station which is pretty much town :)
@DoctorOctagonapus Drinks afterwards sounds spot on! I know the station is a little bit on the outskirts of town, we'll see what we can come up with. At the moment it looks like a fair few people will be travelling by train to York, so someone needs to pick them up at the station and bring them to whatever we're doing.
@chromiselda i'm happy to do that if need be
If anyone is coming from Hull or on the route I can give a lift in my car, just share fuel cost :)
@ooer Your head still needs to be soaked by a fountain. That's the only way we'll allow it ;-) http://www.reddit.com/r/york/comments/rsp95/if_we_reach_300_readers_i_will_dunk_my_head_in/
@DoctorOctagonapus I think it's something we'll need to get planned before the day. Depending on the interest I think it would be good to have a nice organiser, or at least marshal, to attendee ratio, especially for those out of towners not familiar with York
Just an idea, something I do with my friends, Meal at flying legend (2 meals for £10) then there is vue nearby or bus into town.
