YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

    • This CPR ad breathes new life into the zombie and PSA genres. (YouTube)Every once in a while a public service announcement (PSA) comes along that truly takes your breath away. In this new video, "The Undeading," a horde of zombies performs CPR on a hapless victim.

The PSA, directed by Vincenzo Natali for Canada's Heart & Stroke Foundation, is at times informative, hilarious and terrifying. Scariest of all is the first zombie in the video, whose appearance is so grim, he'd fit in perfectly on any given episode of "The Walking Dead."

In the clip, a lone woman finds herself in the middle of a dense urban landscape during the zombie apocalypse. While being surrounded by a mob of zombies, she suddenly experiences a heart attack and all hope seems lost. But in a fit of inspiration, one of the zombies, a former doctor, has a plan.

The PSA plays off the notion that zombies like only victims who are still alive and breathing. And as it cheekily notes, "CPR makes you undead."

In March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a gripping anti-smoking

    • Boy discovers rare, nearly intact woolly mammoth

This handout photo, provided by the International Mammoth Committee in Russia on Oct. 5, 2012, shows the carcass …
Scientists looking at a nearly intact mammoth carcass say the woolly beast may have been killed by an ice-age human.

Alexei Tikhonov of the St. Petersburg Zoology Institute told the Associated Press that the mammoth found in Siberia—one of the best preserved carcasses ever found—could have been "possibly" killed by a human or a rival mammoth.

The remarkable discovery was made last month by an 11-year-old Russian boy. While exploring the area around his home, the youngster uncovered a tusk, bones, fur and flesh of a creature that is estimated to be 30,000 years old, the Daily Mail reports.

The boy, Yevgeny Salinder, according to ABC News, found the remains in permafrost in Taymyr, located in Russia's northernmost region.

The mammoth is informally named Zhenya, after the boy's nickname. Its official name is the Sopkarginsky mammoth, according to ABC News.

The 16-year-old mammoth was 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed about 1,100 pounds, Tikhonov told AP. While the mammoth is nearly

    • Syrup is serious business in Quebec, which houses a reported $30 million worth of maple syrup. (Yahoo!)Breakfast fans, rest assured: Your French toast and pancake toppings are a little safer this morning.

Police have made their first major breakthrough in the great maple syrup heist of 2012, after Canadian authorities seized 600 barrels of maple syrup that was allegedly stolen from a Quebec facility.

In September, the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers reported that a large percentage of its reserve appeared to be missing after conducting a routine inventory inspection at the province's global strategic reserve site at St-Louis-de-Blandford.

Quebec produces 80 percent of the world's commercial supply of maple syrup.

A local exporter said police approached him and said they intended to search his business property in an investigation related to the missing syrup. "They came in and said we're taking everything, there wasn't much I could do," said Etienne St-Pierre, who told The Associated Press he initially thought the officers were joking.

St-Pierre said the syrup awaiting export

    • Even the ushers in the Blumhouse of Horrors will send chills up your spine (Blumhouse)Next week on the Sideshow we will be debuting the first of what will hopefully become a regular video feature on the blog. Today, we'd like to give you a preview of that first episode, a tour of the Blumhouse of Horrors.

The Blumhouse of Horrors was conceived by Jason Blum, producer of the Paranormal Activity films and the upcoming movie, Sinister.

"Blumhouse is passionate about telling scary stories in entirely new ways and we are taking everything we have learned from our film production experience to create a one-of-a-kind Haunted House in downtown L.A.," Blum said.

Blum is no stranger to haunted houses; along with the Paranormal Activity series, he has also produced the 2010 haunted house flick Insidious.

But for this project, Blum turned his attention to a real-world location that many say is itself haunted: The Variety Arts Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

    • Scientists are trying to identify the strange black spidery objects in these images. (Michael Benson/NASA/JPL/University …

Someone alert Ziggy Stardust, there appear to be spiders on Mars.

Strange black objects seen from 200 miles above the surface of Mars are generating interest and speculation that the unidentified objects could be anything from geysers to sunbathing colonies of microorganisms.

NPR presents several photos of the objects, including one taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on Jan. 27, 2010, that appears to show "little black flecks dotting the ridges, mostly on the sunny side, like sunbathing spiders sitting in rows."

The objects were first spotted in 1998. Interestingly, they appear when the surface of Mars begins to warm, showing up in the same location most of the time. And then when the Martian winter approaches, they disappear with the same precise regularity. The images have been brought into greater detail by Michael Benson in his book "Planetfall: New Solar System Visions."

Most scientists, including teams from the U.S. Geological Survey, Hungary and the European Space Agency,
