Calif. gasoline prices hit all-time high - twice

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California motorists faced another day of record-breaking gasoline prices Sunday, though relief appeared to be on the way.

In its latest update early Sunday, AAA reported that the statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4.655. Saturday's average of $4.6140 was the highest since June 19, 2008, when it was $4.6096.

The four-penny-per-gallon jump Sunday was less than Saturday's increase, which was 12 cents.

Sunday's price, like Saturday's, was the highest in the nation, with the Golden State overtaking Hawaii as the state with the most expensive fuel due to a temporary reduction in supply.

In some locations, fuming motorists paid $5 or more per gallon while station owners had to shut down pumps in others.

A station in Long Beach had California's priciest gas at $6.65 for a gallon of regular, according to GasBuddy.com. Meanwhile customers at an outlet in San Pablo paid just $3.49, the lowest price in the state.

The average for a gallon of regular was $4.69 in Los Angeles, $4.71 in San Diego and San Francisco, $4.55 in Sacramento and $4.90 in Santa Barbara, according to GasBuddy.com.

The dramatic surge came after a power outage Monday at a Southern California refinery that reduced supply in an already fragile and volatile market, analysts said. The refinery came back online Friday and prices were expected to stabilize in the coming days.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, predicted the average price could peak as high as $4.85 before coming back down.

Red Sonja, why would anyone with a brain want Meg? Glad you left. Have a good time wherever you are. I remember Jerry Brown from his first incarnation as governor - he lived in a cheap apartment instead of a governor's mansion, and drove a Plymouth, instead of a chauffeured limo. He also dated ladies like Linda Ronstadt. Cool guy.

Commish: Inflation is strictly the fed. increasing the money supply (printing more greenbacks). The money has a lower value, because there is more of it in circulation (just like iron is worth less than gold because there is more iron out there). Prices, particularly imports, go up, so people demand higher wages. A good book that is a quick read about this is "The Great German Inflation" but it may be hard to find as it is about 30+ years old.

Obama like all presidents before him, controls the flow of oil in this country. Because of that he can manipulate the price to a certain extent. Over a long term, the president can set trends for gas prices by regulation of the additives that are required to be added and the way the fuel must be blended. This is done through the EPA and does not require congress' approval at all. so the short answer is yes the president does control the gas price, and this president wants gas prices to go higher so that by comparison green energy will look cheaper. He does not care who he hurts to accomplish this because he feels the end is worth the means.

Inflation would look really , really bad if gas prices and food & medical costs were included wouldn't it.Social Security would be solvent were it not for the raiding of the "TRUST FUND " by the federals government to cover overspending .Wonder why "disposable income " is non -existent ? You shouldn't. Wait till we start to run out of water .Next time you want to have the government tie itself in knots over health care , abortion , gay rights and inept education and you are pumping $5 gas into your car, have no food , can't get a drink of water or flush your toilet you might very well finally realize that your priorities have been in error.

Craig, gas should not be subsidized by the government. Competition always lowers prices and standardize the gasoline regulations so 50 states don't have 50 different blends. Congress actually has the authority to do this.
