"We've been doing this longer than you've been alive," Rhett Miller sings at the start of the latest Old 97's album, Most Messed Up, in a song that fares better than most of those self-referential numbers cranked out by songwriters who've been at it a while. The lyric might not be an accurate reflection of the band's demographic — most in the audience at Webster Hall Tuesday night were old enough to have bought the first Old 97's record in 1994, and plenty could have gotten legally drunk while listening to it.

Beastie Boys' suit against Monster Energy has ended, with jurors finding against the beverage company to the tune of $1.7 million.
The suit, brewing for two years before the trial began last Tuesday in New York Federal Court, centered around Monster Energy's use of a Beastie Boys "megamix," put together by DJ Z-Trip, who gave Monster Energy representative Nelson Phillips the OK to use to use his mix for the soundtrack of a four-minute-long recap video of a snowboarding competition sponsored by the company.

Following the deaths of his brothers and bandmates, Maurice in 2003 from a heart attack, and Robin in 2012 from complications of cancer, Barry Gibb had kept a relatively low profile before emerging late last year with the Mythology Tour, his first solo trek.

The crowd at the Hollywood Bowl Saturday night -- the first of two sold-out Bruno Mars/Pharrell Williams shows -- was diverse, even for Los Angeles. The unfathomable storyline of the 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man, which culminates with a series of South Africa arena concerts in 1998, appears to be playing out in similar fashion in America. Justin Bieber has apologized for a racist joke heard during a five-year-old video clip of the singer that was widely circulated online, calling the comment a "reckless and immature mistake."
In the clip -- which was originally recorded when the singer was 15 but has recently surfaced by British tabloid newspaper The Sun on Sunday -- the pop star is heard telling a joke with a racist punch line. It has since been posted on TMZ.
