As America’s largest classroom, PBS offers digital content and services for teachers of children from pre-K through 12th grade that help bring classroom lessons to life. PBS LearningMedia, a partnership of PBS and WGBH Educational Foundation, is a free and paid media-on-demand service offering educators access to the best of public media and delivers research-based, classroom-ready digital learning experiences to engage students in exploring curriculum concepts that align with National and Common Core State Standards. Nationwide, more than 1.8 million teachers and users have registered access to more than 120,000 digital resources available through PBS LearningMedia. WHYY I Like this Book
WHYY I Like this Book is WHYY’s commitment to promoting literacy in the Philadelphia region by connecting children to each other through literacy in an effort to promote reading at home and in the classroom. The WHYY I Like This Book program seeks to promote an appreciation for lifelong reading and encourages children in kindergarten through twelfth grade to share their thoughts about a favorite book. Finalists are featured in a series of reading and literacy-focused 60-second video spots that air on WHYY-TV throughout the year. These spots explore the motivations behind what interests a child about a book — the topic, the illustrations, the characters, a book that is a family favorite, and how children choose to read what they read. The finalists were chosen from over 2,200 applications received from students in Grades K-12 throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey.
American Graduate
American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen is public media’s long-term commitment to supporting community-based solutions to the dropout crisis. Supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), more than 80 public radio and television stations have joined forces with over 1,000 partners and at-risk schools across 30 states.
Professional Development Courses for Educators
Educators participating in professional development courses learn methods for implementing 21st Century Learning Skills in their classrooms. They learn to help their students create digital media and receive tips for integrating those skills into existing curricula and project-based learning approaches. Course are approved for Pennsylvania Act 48 credit. WHYY will also provide documentation for Delaware and New Jersey educators. Participants may be teachers of any content area looking for a new outlet for student expression and education. Classroom video and audio production projects are designed to be student centered. As such, participating teachers will learn to guide their students through hands-on lessons while students develop their voices as multimedia storytellers. Questions?
