About Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC)

What is the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program?

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created the EITC Program to stimulate giving to innovative educational organizations. Qualified businesses can earn significant tax credits equal to 75% – 90% of its contributions to approved Educational Improvement Organizations. WHYY is approved as an Educational Improvement Organization (EIO) and is eligible to receive EITC contributions for WHYY Media Labs, WHYY Afterschool and WHYY Summer.

Does my business qualify?

To learn if your business qualifies for EITC, you can reach out to your accountant or the PA Department of Community and Economic Development. Businesses in Pennsylvania that pay any of the following taxes are eligible to apply for EITC credits:

  • Personal Income Tax
  • Capital Stock/Foreign Franchise Tax
  • Corporate Net Income Tax
  • Bank Shares Tax
  • Title Insurance & Trust Company Shares Tax
  • Insurance Premium Tax (excluding surplus lines, unauthorized, domestic/foreign marine)
  • Mutual Thrift Tax
  • Malt Beverage Tax
  • Retaliatory Fees under section 212 of the Insurance Company Law of 1921

What if I don’t own a business?

You may still qualify! WHYY donors can receive a Pennsylvania state tax credit up to 90% of their tax liability from EITC by contributing through our fundraising partner, Friends of Education LLC. You may be eligible for a tax credit from EITC if:

  • You are employed by a business firm with physical presence in Pennsylvania.
  • You own one or more shares in a business firm with physical presence in Pennsylvania.
  • You file taxes jointly with your spouse who owns shares of or is employed by a business firm with physical presence in Pennsylvania.

We offer free lesson plans, hands-on media arts training at WHYY’s Philadelphia Studios, teacher professional development and more. Our signature program, WHYY Media Labs, has partneredis a partnership with 49 58 schools across Philadelphia and New Jersey, that bringings equipment and instruction to thousands of students each school year.

WHYY Summer offers intensive multi-week experiences for students finishing grades 6-12 as well as a spring break program for middle school students. This project-based program provides immersive media-production experiences in which the participants work in teams to create original news or film productions in news
