Future plans for putting parts of Jetpack behind a pay wall

    This is more a question about the future of the free version of Jetpack than a support question. I noticed that I cannot see parts of the site stats that show the reviews by posts each day. Instead, I see a button that asks me to upgrade to a paid version of the plugin. It seems to be a wake up call about our features that may also be put behind a pay wall. It would be great if we have some insight as to what features will be taken from the free version of Jetpack and what would happen to the components that may be in use if we do not switch to a paid subscription. These sudden changes are a little nerve wrecking wondering what may disappear tomorrow.

    Please provide some idea about the future plans for Jetpack free version and what features will be on the line as time goes on.

    Another user asking a related question alerted me to the possibility of my site being treated as commercial. It is hard to know what the determining factors may be, but I do not have a store, and so far I have not sold any of my photographs online although I encourage people to inquire about them.

    A related question I have is this: If I switch to another stats plugin, is it possible to transfer my site stats history to that plugin? I am getting uncomfortable with Jetpack directions and site evaluations.

    Yet another related question; is it possible to request that the site be reviewed again to remove the commercial classification? If it is, what is the process? I do not have affiliate links although I review products and receive no payments for that. On every review, you will see a disclaimer that there are no affiliate links in the article.

    Please advise how to proceed to remove the commercial designation of my site.

    OK, Jetpack, you finally convinced me that I should give up on Jetpack. So, I jettisoned all my Tiled Galleries, WordPress galleries will be fine. I eliminated the image compare modules with a different plugin. I have two site stats plugins are running and I will choose one of them. The arbitrary treatment of sites as “commercial” and ignoring questions about that is not good marketing. I know, I taught it for over 40 years. Enough is enough.

    I will write a new article on my site and explain what I did and give a few pointers. Maybe other users may decide to dump Jetpack.

    Thanks for your patience and for bearing with us; we’re working on a backlog of support requests at this time, and we generally answer in the order received. II hope it’s not too late to reply to your questions! ‘m going to answer them one by one as follows 🙂

    While this is a bit hard to tell, we should not have any future plans in that sense; we strive to keep our users updated on the latest as much as possible, and alert them about possible changes as soon as we can.

    It is hard to know what the determining factors may be, but I do not have a store, and so far I have not sold any of my photographs online although I encourage people to inquire about them.

    A site is considered a commercial site if it includes a (or multiple) source(s) of income – whether they’re active and making money or not. Examples are affiliate links, ads, and shop links. Even if you don’t make money with the revenue source you have in your site (and that sounds like your current status), the system might think you’re making money out of it (because it cannot check your revenue data!) and flag your site as commercial.

    The good news is that we’re currently reviewing our Stats paywall, and you might be able to access to some stats by keeping your current site status. Keep an eye on our next announcements.

    If I switch to another stats plugin, is it possible to transfer my site stats history to that plugin?

    You can export your Stats data, however whether you can re-import them as historical data would depend on the type of software/plugin receiving the data, so I can’t tell you that for sure.

    To download your Stats data, click the title of each feature on your stats page, and scroll to the bottom of that feature to download your stats. Then click on the “Download data as CSV” link, and download the file to your computer.

    That’s sad to read, although we totally respect your ideas. We’d love if you’d be open to change your mind once again and give Jetpack another go.

    Jetpack has to be more open with its processes and not do things like categorizing a site as commercial because there are posts reviewing products. And, that is only one part of it. I have made multiple requests, suggestions, recommendations and years passed with no action on them. You can check my comments here as well as on github.

    This kind of corporate behavior bothers me because I taught marketing at college and graduate levels for over 40 years and this is not what we taught. Pushing the consumer aside is, or used to be, one of the worst mistakes any company could do.

    I also understand that this is one of the ways WordPerfect can monetize on their ideas. In fact, introduction of Jetpack was an effort to break some components of it off into a plugin. And, as the saying goes, the rest is history.
