    Hello,

I’m trying to use the Jetpack related posts feature at the bottom of our posts. However after about a year or two, we have a post expirator plugin that will set old posts into “Draft” status. I tested this in our staging environment and once I set one of the related posts to “Draft” it breaks the entire related posts feature and none of them appear.

I was hoping that once a post isn’t available as a related post, it would be replaced by another related post through a similar category or tag. Is there a way to fix this?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi @rachfong

This is actually expected behavor as the Related Posts for a given article are cached for 12 hours.

This feature uses the WordPress.com infrastructure and mirrors your content there for indexing. You can request a reindex of your site by clicking on initiate a sync manually under Data synchronization, at the bottom of your WordPress.com Settings → General → Manage connection page.

Even after a reindex, old posts may not get updated Related Post content (and posts with no Related Posts will continue to have no Related Posts, until the cache expires.) Usually the best way to check if the reindexing worked is to either wait a day, or to publish a new post, and see if Related Posts show up on the new post.

    Hi Bruce,

Thank you for your response. Would I just have to wait about 12 hours for a new related article to appear or if this occurs every time we set an old article to a “Draft” status, or would I have to perform a reindex of my site every time we have an old article set to a “Draft” status?

    Hi @rachfong!

Waiting 12 hours is the most definite way, but you can also try reindexing to speed it along. But as my colleague Bruce mentioned, reindexing might not do the trick.

As an aside – I took a look at the link you provided and don’t see Jetpack Related Posts at all on the site – do you have them temporarily deactivated as you wait for the cache? If so, make sure to re-enable them so we can see them in action if you have any further troubleshooting concerns. 🙂

    Thanks!

    Hi @jenhooks

I have the jetpack plugin activated, the only thing I did to test this out was that I went to one of the related articles and set it to a “Draft” status. I do see that the related articles haven’t refreshed after 12 hours since I did this on Wednesday.

Is there something that I may need to do for the articles to refresh? I actually wasn’t able to find the reindexing feature under the General > Manage connection page in my WordPress dashboard settings.

I actually wasn’t able to find the reindexing feature under the General > Manage connection page in my WordPress dashboard settings.

I think that may be because your site is not currently connected properly. Can you go to Jetpack > My Jetpack in your site’s dashboard, and under the Connection section, disconnect your site and then reconnect it?

Once you’ve done that, if you still have trouble, can you give us an example of a post where one of the related posts is a draft?

    Hi there,

It has been more than one week since we have heard from you, so I’m marking this topic as resolved.

But if you have any further questions or need some more help, you’re welcome to reply here or open another thread.

@drawmyface I just connected Jetpack to my site, however the related posts aren’t even showing up at the bottom of any of the articles on my site. I checked one of the support issues and I have Gutenberg disabled so that the posts are using the classic editor.

This is the site that I am testing the Jetpack related posts on: https://perspectcopy.wpengine.com/retirees-your-2022-tax-forms-are-now-available/

    Hi @rachfong

We can test the Related Posts functionality by adding ?relatedposts=1 to your URL:

    https://perspectcopy.wpengine.com/retirees-your-2022-tax-forms-are-now-available/?relatedposts=1

If there were Related Posts for this post we would see their numeric IDs in the items section of that response. This of course, assumes that Jetpack determines there are quality related posts as described here.

I made some adjustments with synced data and related posts are now showing for other posts. For example:

    https://perspectcopy.wpengine.com/calpers-longest-serving-board-member-retires-with-a-heartfelt-sendoff/?relatedposts=1

It appears that we are determining there isn’t a sufficiently related post for the “tax form” post shared on this thread. You might try adding additional content or tags to see if that helps. There may not be enough content to determine that other posts are sufficiently related.

    I hope that helps.

Hi @lastsplash the links that you posted in here do no work for me. But I did check back on my staging site and the related posts are now appearing at the bottom of the article now. I’m going to continue to test this by setting one of the articles into a “Draft” status and see if the related articles refresh after 12 hours.

    Hi again,

Thanks for the update and letting us know that the Related Posts are working on your staging site. Do let us know the results of your tests with the Draft post and if you need further help.

    Best,

@gaurav984 the related posts are officially working and they do refresh 24 hours later when I set one of the related posts into a draft status. Thank you!
