Baja Beans isn't a place you'll accidentally stumble upon. It's located off a dirt road in the small town of Pescadero, just south of Todos Santos. But this locals' favorite is well worth seeking out, not only for the superb coffees, but also the fine food and rustic outdoor atmosphere. The company sources their beans from Finca Los Puentos in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Xicotepec, Puebla, roasts them with a vintage 1980s Probat roaster, and sells the finished product to many of the region's best hotels and restaurants. The onsite café and restaurant also offers pastries and other light fare, which can be enjoyed al fresco amid the sprawling property's mango trees. Sunday is the best day visit, with brunch specials like vegetarian frittatas, as well as a farmer's market and live music.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Baja Beans is the best coffee maker is Baja California Sur, and home to the region's coolest outdoor café.
Chris's expert tip: Sunday is the best time to visit. The café offers a special brunch menu, as well as a farmer's market and live music.
Pan di Bacco is a Neapolitan-style bakery, deli, restaurant, wine bar and coffee shop that opened in downtown Cabo San Lucas early in 2013. Pan di Bacco specializes in locally sourced, artisanal ingredients, and as one might imagine, the culinary pleasures here are legion. Fresh breads, egg-based dishes, salads and paninis highlight the breakfast and lunch menu, while dinner delights include antipasti, gourmet pizzas, mix and match croquettes, soups, pastas, custom cutting board options and decadent desserts. Wines are offered in small or full pours, with the former perfect for tastings and small plate pairings. Excellent beers and coffee drinks are also available, as are take-out breads, cakes and cookies from the onsite bakery.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Pan di Bacco is home to some of the best coffees and pastries in Cabo San Lucas.
Chris's expert tip: Free parking is available upon presentation of a restaurant receipt at the "Misiones" lot on Calle Ninos Heroes, between Calles Melchor Ocampo and Ignacio Zaragosa.
In México, chilaquiles (tortilla strips with beans, chile sauce, eggs, and cheese) are considered a hangover cure, and Lolita's has some of the best in Cabo San Lucas. The huevos rancheros are excellent here as well, and lunchtime visitors will want to sample the birria, a traditional stew with its own healing properties. Lolita's is located just off the downtown loop near the elementary school, and is the kind of place you can't walk by without wanting to go in. Perhaps it's the charming décor, with wooden furnishings, bright paint, the deer hunting mural with the stuffed deer head underneath the display of liquor bottles, or the retro jazz that often plays in the background. This is one of the oldest restaurants in town, and an excellent off-the-beaten-path option for those seeking local color and cuisine.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Lolita's is the best "local color" restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, with excellent Mexican breakfast specialties.
Chris's expert tip: Chilaquiles rank with pozole verde as a Mexican hangover cure, and Lolita's serves the best in Cabo San Lucas.
Wicked is perhaps the best of the downtown pizza parlors, and boasts two central locations; the original next to El Squid Roe, Cabo's liveliest nightspot. The name is a nod to the place's East Coast Italian style pizza ethos, with a focus on thin crusts, hand-tossed dough, and homemade tomato sauce. Wicked offers a variety of tasty specialty pizzas - including Hawaiian, Meat Lover, and Veggie options - but is also beloved by locals for serving up some of the best, most affordable breakfast dishes in town. The second location, across from Tesoro Los Cabos, is a mecca for morning meal seekers. The American Breakfast for $3, with eggs, toast, bacon, potatoes and fresh fruit, is the best deal in town.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Penny Lane is the best breakfast restaurant in the Pedregal neighborhood of Cabo San Lucas.
Chris's expert tip: This is the only pizza parlor in town with a full bar.
Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal ranks with One & Only Palmilla as one of Los Cabos' most exclusive and luxurious resorts, with a host of first-class amenities that include two of the area's best restaurants. The cliffside El Farallón is well-regarded for its stunning views and market-style seafood, while the resort's signature restaurant Don Manuel's boasts old-world hacienda style atmosphere, and a large open kitchen that dishes out superb Mexican accented cuisine. Don Manuel's is a fine dining establishment of deserved repute, yet they favor a more comfortable and relaxed approach than most restaurants of the same quality, with a gracious and welcoming staff adding to the charming, old-fashioned ambiance. Breakfast buffets are laid out daily with fresh fruit, pastries, granola and freshly squeezed juices. Mexican specialties like huevos rancheros and chilaquiles, meanwhile, are cooked to order. Sadly, the delicious Mexican donuts are no longer on the buffet menu.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Don Manuel's serves up the best breakfast buffet in Cabo San Lucas.
Chris's expert tip: Breakfast buffet highlights include huevos rancheros, chilaquiles and handmade tamales.
Still widely considered one of the best breakfast spots in Cabo San Lucas - despite a change in ownership a few years ago - Mama's offers shaded patio dining, and a menu headlined by their delicious and justly lauded French toast. Located on Calle Hidalgo, the city's "restaurant row," Mama's is the perfect place to start your day in paradise, with friendly staff, excellent food, and a delightful ambiance that includes a serenading guitarist backed by a chorus of local birds. The menu includes a large selection of American-style omelets and Mexican breakfast standards, but the French toast is the star. It's stuffed with cream cheese, topped with fruit and berries, and flambéed in orange liqueur.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Mama's is generally considered the best breakfast restaurant in downtown Cabo San Lucas.
Chris's expert tip: Menu highlights include the "world's best french toast." It's stuffed with cream cheese, topped with fruit and berries, and flambéed in orange liqueur.
Steaks and seafood are the dinner staples at La Malquerida, but this charming, Mexican-themed outdoor eatery on one-block-long Calle Zapata also serves up some of the best breakfasts in town. American style omelets, French toast and pancakes are available and done well, but it's the Mexican items that steal the show. The chilaquiles, in either red or green sauce, are superb; spicy and topped with cream, coriander and Cotija cheese. So too are the huevos rancheros, served up with refried beans in crumbled panela cheese; and the mole enchiladas, stuffed with chicken and cheese and covered in Puebla style chile and chocolate flavored mole. Homemade oatmeal and fresh fruit plates are also popular, the latter showcasing organic regional fruit and honey.
Recommended for Breakfast because: This is the best breakfast restaurant in downtown Cabo San Lucas.
Chris's expert tip: La Malquerida is one of the few local breakfast restaurants that serve chocolate milk.
The walls of Latitude 22+ are a Los Cabos history lesson, filled with old photos enormous catches and fishing contests, prominent local personages, and even life preservers from notable area vessels. The place comes by its nautical aspect honestly - owner Mike Grzanich first came to Cabo San Lucas on a tuna boat in 1959 - but also serves as a treasure trove for license plates and other souvenirs left by visitors over the years. The bar is one-of-a-kind, with gorgeous Land's End views available from your barstool, and old-fashioned booths in the back offer privacy for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The go-to breakfast is a "John Wayne" special with eggs, sausage and ranchero sauce, plus sides of rice and potatoes. Other rib-sticking pleasures range from white sausage gravy slathered Croatian Eggs Benedick to chicken fried steak, rib-eye steak and pot roast. Piano player Peter Bacon is a big draw during the high season.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Latitude 22+ is one of the best breakfast spots in the Tourist Corridor, pairing hearty American style breakfasts with Land's End views.
Chris's expert tip: Start your day in paradise with the John Wayne special, or chicken fried steak.
Owner Markus Saeffert brought his French built Pavailler oven down the Baja California península in so many pieces it took nearly a month to put it all back together again. It was worth the trouble. This downtown bakery - it opened in 2012 near City Club - makes the best breads and pastries in Los Cabos, as evidenced by the large number of local groceries and restaurants that now sell or serve them. German style brezel is a particular specialty (Saeffert is originally from Stuttgart), but birote, ciabatta, focaccia, sourdough and New York rye are also made fresh daily, as are the incredible cinnamon rolls. The shaded outdoor tables are popular with the local crowd, and this is as close to a European style café as there is in Cabo San Lucas. Egg-based breakfasts, sandwiches and pizzas headline the menu options, with morning mimosas and afternoon cocktails providing an alternative to the excellent coffees.
Recommended for Breakfast because: This is the best bakery in Cabo San Lucas, with superb coffees and pastries.
Chris's expert tip: Try the freshly baked focaccia bread with tomato pressed in fresh herbs and infused with extra virgin olive oil.
What started as a taco stand is now a fixture of the Marina dining scene, with a corner location on the waterfront, just behind Tesoro Los Cabos Resort. Solomon's Landing is popular with both locals and tourists thanks to a combination of first-rate food, first-class service and affordable prices. The menu covers a lot of ground, but Chef Brian Solomon specializes in seafood. Like most area restaurants, there is a "you hook it, we'll cook it policy," and whether you've brought your own catch or are sampling from the menu offerings, the kitchen staff will prepare your choice of fish any way you like it, including a la Veracruz, Rockefeller, and many other styles. Decadent fruit, Canadian maple syrup, chocolate chip and fresh whipping cream topped "waffles of your dreams" headline the breakfast offerings.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Solomon's serves the best breakfasts on the Cabo San Lucas Marina.
Chris's expert tip: For breakfast, try the "waffle of your dreams" with mixed berries compote, semi-sweet chocolate chips, Canadian maple syrup, and whipped cream.
