We think of Thanksgiving as one big eating event when, in reality, it's one large meal and several days of leftovers. After a day or two of turkey salad sandwiches and reheated green bean casserole, Thanksgiving can get tiresome. But there's one leftover that Americans keep coming back for: stuffing.
According to a survey conducted by The Honey Baked Ham Company, the top Thanksgiving leftover in 48 states is stuffing, while eaters in Washington and Colorado race to the refrigerator for mashed potatoes. Overall, stuffing won the nationwide vote at 31.1%, with mashed potatoes coming in second (17.1%) and sweet potatoes coming in third (9.7%).
In the South, macaroni and cheese tied with sweet potato casserole as the second most favorite Thanksgiving leftover. As for green bean casserole, Midwesterners tend to enjoy the dish more than any other region.
In the same survey, The Honey Baked Ham Company found that Americans finish their Thanksgiving leftovers in 2.7 days on average. New Yorkers tend to eat their leftovers the fastest at 2.5 days, while those in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho and Utah tie for the slowest leftover eaters at 3.2 days.
At least there's one thing that Americans can agree on: a love of stuffing.
