John Cena is preparing to embark on his farewell tour.
The 16-time WWE champion announced to thousands of fans in Toronto on Saturday night during the WWE’s “Monday in the Bank” event that he plans on retiring in 2025.
“Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from the WWE,” the professional wrestler told the crowd, which was quickly met with many boos in disappointment prompting him to add, “I hear a mixed opinion out there.”
The 47 year old, who has been with the WWE for over two decades, explained why he chose the event for his announcement and praised the Canadian fans, saying, “In all those years, one of the most important – one of the most impressive – things that I learned was whether the WWE is hot or cold, Canadians always show up. Always.”
As he continued his emotional speech, Cena told the crowd that “farewell does not end tonight” and listed the appearances he’ll partake in next year, including the first episode of the WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” on Netflix, set to debut in January 2025.
“…We are going to build so many unforgettable lasts. The 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last. The 2025 Elimination Chamber will be my last. And I’m here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas, WrestleMania 2025 will be the last WrestleMania I compete in.”
To wrap up his remarks, the wrestler-turned-actor thanked fans. “Thank you so much for letting me play in the house that you built for so many years,” he said in part after being met with a chant from the crowd who loudly yelled, “Thank you, Cena!”
