Religion and the Rebel, Colin Wilson’s second volume from his internationally acclaimed Outsider Cycle, is a casebook about and for rebels. With inspirational wisdom and engaging clarity, Wilson shows us that the purpose of religion, of our personal relationship with the sacred and the all-pervading mystery of existence, is to expand our consciousness and intensify our sense of life. Wilson heroically claims that the power to create meaning resides in our mental and spiritual discipline. Examining the lives and works of Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Rilke, Shaw, Pascal, Swedenborg, Rimbaud and Scott Fitzgerald, among others, Wilson explores the main existential questions and shows how these remarkable writers, scientists, philosophers and poets faced their need for transcendence. Like many of us, they were driven by a need to become more than men. Religion and the Rebel is an outstanding and enjoyable book that combines philosophical analysis, historical interest, and religious insight.

Part of a series of books that should be republished and made available once more.Religion and the Rebel and The Outsider are, in my view, the two best nonfiction books by Wilson before he began writing about other subjects, such as the occult and criminology. I read both these book quite some time ago, and it is good to have them now republished so I can read them once again. Do I still think they are as good as when I first read them? So far: yes. In fact these two books stand the test of time and are still very readable and relevant today, sixty years after they were first published. I would certainly like to see Wilson’s complete ‘Outsider Cycle’ republished. I have recently been reading the very good biography by Gary Lachman (Beyond the Robot). I believe there are 6 or 7 books in the series. It would great to have them all republished so Wilson’s work can once again be available to a new generation of readers.I hope you find my review helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live More Intensely

If you liked The Outsider, this is sequel. It's like the B side of a record. It evolves the same premises of The Outsider but has a slant more toward philosophers and spiritual thinkers rather than toward writers only or artists. If you loved The Outsider, this is an excellent sequel. I didn't find it about "religion" per say, thank God, but about living with purpose, living one's purpose, in spite of the day to day distractions and obligations. It's about developing one's spiritual talents outside of the box. The Outsider was more about Psychology and Literature, this book extends those ideas but moves it into a more spiritual discussion. In his words, it's about living more intensely, as I'd say more passionately and with purpose.
