About the authors
James Patterson is the most popular storyteller of our time. He is the creator of unforgettable characters and series, including Alex Cross, the Women’s Murder Club, Jane Smith, and Maximum Ride, and of breathtaking true stories about the Kennedys, John Lennon, and Tiger Woods, as well as our military heroes, police officers, and ER nurses. Patterson has coauthored #1 bestselling novels with Bill Clinton and Dolly Parton, and collaborated most recently with Michael Crichton on the blockbuster “Eruption.” He has told the story of his own life in “James Patterson by James Patterson” and received an Edgar Award, ten Emmy Awards, the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation, and the National Humanities Medal.
Mike Lupica is one of the most prominent sports writers in America. His longevity at the top of his field is based on his experience and insider's knowledge, coupled with a provocative presentation that takes an uncompromising look at the tumultuous world of professional sports. Today he is a syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News, which includes his popular “Shooting from the Lip” column, which appears every Sunday. He began his newspaper career covering the New York Knicks for the New York Post at age 23. He became the youngest columnist ever at a New York paper with the New York Daily News, which he joined in 1977. For more than 30 years, Lupica has added magazines, novels, sports biographies, other non-fiction books on sports, as well as television to his professional resume. For the past fifteen years, he has been a TV anchor for ESPN's The Sports Reporters. He also hosted his own program, The Mike Lupica Show on ESPN2. In 1987, Lupica launched “The Sporting Life” column in Esquire magazine. He has published articles in other magazines, including Sport, World Tennis, Tennis, Golf Digest, Playboy, Sports Illustrated, ESPN: The Magazine, Men's Journal and Parade. He has received numerous honors, including the 2003 Jim Murray Award from the National Football Foundation. Mike Lupica co-wrote autobiographies with Reggie Jackson and Bill Parcells, collaborated with noted author and screenwriter, William Goldman on Wait Till Next Year, and wrote The Summer of '98, Mad as Hell: How Sports Got Away from the Fans and How We Get It Back and Shooting From the Lip, a collection of columns. In addition, he has written a number of novels, including Dead Air, Extra Credits, Limited Partner, Jump, Full Court Press, Red Zone, Too Far and national bestsellers Wild Pitch and Bump and Run. Dead Air was nominated for the Edgar Allen Poe Award for Best First Mystery and became a CBS television move, “Money, Power, Murder” to which Lupica contributed the teleplay. Over the years he has been a regular on the CBS Morning News, Good Morning America and The MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour. On the radio, he has made frequent appearances on Imus in the Morning since the early 1980s. His previous young adult novels, Travel Team, Heat, Miracle on 49th Street, and the summer hit for 2007, Summer Ball, have shot up the New York Times bestseller list. Lupica is also what he describes as a “serial Little League coach,” a youth basketball coach, and a soccer coach for his four children, three sons and a daughter. He and his family live in Connecticut.

Twelve Months to Live is a legal thriller with a strong female protagonist who controls and holds on tightly to the storyline. Even though she has received a deadly diagnosis with a year to live, she fights her way through a tough trial with a client she does not trust or believe, in his innocence.
Jane F. Smith, though having a plain and common moniker, is anything but. She takes charge in everything she does, never resting to take a breath. She even continues to train for a biathlon in her weakening state of health after chemo. There are two likable male characters that support her or at least try to throughout the grueling trial.
I found this story at first to be irritating with its staccato-type prose, sentences that weren’t sentences. As I continued to read, the prose smoothed out and I grew to respect and admire the character Jane for her stamina in the toughest times. This is definitely a different style of writing for Patterson as he pulls in other authors to combine their talents.
I did enjoy this book and look forward to the next in the series.
I have kind of stopped reading Patterson since he started writing with co-authors. Some books are better than others, depending on who the co-author is. Patterson says he likes developing plots but likes others to write them.
Patterson and co-author Lupica (and later their wives) have made ads where they talk about how this is the best book they have ever written. Their enthusiasm is so intense that I broke down and got the book.
They are wrong.
This is an OK book, but definitely nothing like the earlier books that Patterson wrote by himself. I only give it 2-1/2 stars.
Jane is a defense attorney who has been hired to defend a guy she is pretty sure killed a family of 3, but who says he's innocent. As she is about to defend him in court, she learns that she has Stage 4 cancer and is given 12 months to live. (Patterson says the other two books in the series will be called "6 months to live" and "3 months to live.")
There's a lot of killing, a lot of threats to be killed, and witnesses who can either provide her client with an alibi or make it sound like he did it. After a lengthy trial (during which her cancer symptoms plague her because she refuses to take chemo), a verdict is given and we still aren't sure if it is the right verdict or not.
As I said, this is an OK story and it kept my attention, but I longed for a page turner to read and found it in a Harlan Coben book that I stared when I finished this one.
I’ve finished the book and was ecstatic that there was not ONE lull in the story! It moved with all sorts of twists and I was sorry to finish it!! I’m hoping to find another from one or hopefully both of these authors that will be just as enjoyable. I have found it VERY hard to find an author I enjoy as much as I did Robert Parker’s Spencer series! This was great!!!

The lead character is my kind of character, terminally ill and fighting it every day, while managing to play detective, lawyer, lover and dog owner. They really do pack a lot in
The basic plot is a court case, with a unlikable defendant, and the big question, did he do it or not.
If you want a book which keeps you guessing to the end, makes you smile, and is easy on your mind, then highly recommended
