Grotesque. Vile. Disgusting. Exquisite.
This book. Wow. It is truly captivating. There were times I had to put it down, times i could not put it down, and times I could rewrite the story itself. It was beautiful. An incredible journey that I will be re-reading again. It horrified me to my bones, but I need to keep going. I loved Nick (the main character) and how he slowly devolved (or evolved?) into we he became after experiencing the black farm. I already ordered the next book: Return to the Black Farm and i am thoroughly excited to see what has become of the farm, the pig, and of course Nick. So good!

This is one of the best stories I've ever read!! One of my favorite horrors I've read this year and one I will NEVER forget. It'll be hard to top this one. I was blown away by the phenomenal world building and the insane brutality this story delivered. I could NOT put this book down!! Omg it was freaking amazing! Incredibly dark, twisted and beyond disturbing. The most unique concept l've come across. The sheer perseverance of true survival in such a horrific world. Brilliant characters, the plot was SO addicting. Detailed imagery, I could visualize everything in this story down to every little aspect. It was gross, heartbreaking and entertaining. A terrifying & outright scary read, a place that exists in this book is a thing of true nightmares! I highly recommend this horror but only if you can handle it! It is not for the faint of heart and the dark themes within this story are unhinged.

This story is disturbing and heartbreaking but a fascinating read for anyone who loves that kind of story. The main characters commit suicide after a string of difficulties and loss in order to end the pain. Instead they find themselves in purgatory, a place that seems closer to hell than somewhere in between. How far would you go to find and save the one you live against impossible odds and at risk of facing great pain yourself at every turn? Expect dark and savage torture that will stick with you. It was a quick read even at over 300 pages.

If you are considering getting this book, that already means you should probably get it. I heard about this author from CreepCast YouTube channel which posted a reading of his short story. I was sold. I will say...this book is even better. By a long shot. I love all the characters. It is more intense than the short story and it fleshes out everything you were asking yourself when reading or listening to the short story. This needs to be made into a move ASAP.

I discovered this book and storyworld, like others, through the No Sleep Podcast, where Witherow's short story, "Feed the Pig," was featured. This novel is an exploration of that storyworld -- the Black Farm, a twisted limbo for people who commit suicide, ruled by a porcine demigod. The story has graphic descriptions of gore and torture in spades. The story is interesting, written in an engaging if underwhelming style. What I disliked is that Witherow frames himself as someone breathing new life and concepts into the horror genre (see author bio in book), implying that the genre is stale or in need of rescuing. The problem is, this book doesn't bankroll that claim/aim. It's a good book, certainly, but it's pretty standard fare for the genre. There are plenty of "tour of hell" stories out there. Horror is also home to plenty of gorefests. What's new here? Not enough to justify the savior rhetoric.

I don't think the book has to offer something new to the genre in order to be good, however. In fact, its status as well-written genre fare is what I liked the most! The Black Farm doesn't reinvent anything about the genre, but it is a worthy, if imperfect, performance of the tradition. My biggest complaints about the story itself are the unfinished plot lines around two characters Nick double-crosses, Peter and Pudge. Both are handily dispatched by the main character but, before their deaths, they promise vengeance...and then never resurface in the story. Those two characters, especially Peter, might have made for an interesting recurring/main foe for Nick. Instead, they serve a purpose for Nick (and the story's plot) and are summarily dismissed despite giving the reader a sense that they might return and exact their justice. That felt like a missed opportunity and, more importantly, it reduced these characters to obstacles rather than real players in the sick, sad world of The Black Farm.

The ending was satisfyingly true to genre form. If I could, I'd give this book 3.5 stars. I'm excited to see how Witherow develops as a writer and contributor to the genre.

This was dark, twisted and deliciously disturbing. I haven't cringed that much in a long time... and I enjoyed every bit of it.
The story is surrounded by Nick and Jess who are consumed with grief after losing a child. They make a suicide pact hoping to end the pain that they are suffering. Yet, instead of drifting off to the darkness of nothing, they wake up in a world of terror. Separated from each other and enduring the most hellish atrocities, they embark on a fight for survival. Looking forward to the sequel.
This story is not for the faint of heart. It is very brutal, gory and unsettling.

Wow. What an incredible book. I am almost speechless. The level of detail, character development, and plot is what makes this book comparable to books like LOTR. Completely different plot of course, but the multiple moving parts in this different plane of existence made this book impossible to put down. Witherow did am impeccable job of making this horrid wasteland feel completely real. I felt as if I was watching a movie in my head. The imagery was so well written that this book will be burned into my memory for years to come. The characters were so well thought out. Nick's journey changed him through out the book and of it was interesting to watch him grow into this entirely new person. His character development was actually insane. Every character, human or not, was so well written.
The plot overall was extremely interesting. I found myself holding my breath many times throughout the book just from anxiety. The book was thrilling, captivating and a nail biter. The Black Farm had it all. From guts and gore to action and heartbreak. You will not regret picking up this book.
Off to read the 2nd book!
