Technical glitches make this app frustrating to use
The CNN go app experiences several glitches that prevent it from working as designed. CNN is my main source of news. Every morning, I turn on my television and experience one of the following issues every single time:1. When you try to view "Live TV" after launching the app, the screen prompts me to sign in with my cable provider every morning. I found that if you navigate back to the "Featured" tab and return to "Live TV", it sometimes fixes this. Otherwise, unplugging and plugging back up my Fire TV is the only solution.2. The app crashes and goes back to the home screen quite frequently.3. My most recent issue - the message "This content is not available right now, please try again later." pops up when the app launches. Hitting "ok" on the pop up does nothing. And unplugging the TV does not resolve the issue.

I know and understand enough to tell fact from propaganda, and CNN does a fair job of delivering solid facts and interesting opinion — even when I don’t agree at all. Like most American news sources, they seem unaware of long-term historical context, and unaware of the subsurface forces at work, but I always try to balance this out with some European and Asian news outlets.

UPDATE: A few days after I wrote my review, I have an update. If you want to watch CNN using a Firestick or similar, I recommend downloading the CNN Go app to your mobile phone. When you go to “watch TV” within the app, you will see an icon in the top right or left that looks like a wifi signal over a TV icon. Click that and it will connect your mobile CNN Go app to the Firestick CNN Go app. They call this “casting” and it works semi-okay. I still have connection glitches with it, it can be a real PITA sometimes, but when I do connect successfully, I can usually watch CNN as long as I want without spinning wheels, blank screens, and constant irritations.

In order for this to work, you need to be logged into the CNN Go app on your Firestick, otherwise, that icon won’t show up.

As I said, I am only a few days into this new method, so it might not work long-term but it’s okay for now.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: This app is an annoying, maddening waste of time. I get about 20-30% actual CNN watching mixed with regular interruptions of the following nature: a blank screen, a spinning wheel, and mysterious pop-ups about access and technical issues that don’t actually seem to correlate to what is actually happening. As one example, every so often the app displays a pop-up saying I need to log in again and then the service suddenly comes back on without my having done so.

Even when I do manage to connect, it takes *several minutes* to load. This would be pretty annoying if you only had to wait it out once per watching session but because of the constant connectivity issues, I have to do it over and over and over again in a single session of a few hours. First, I load the app then wait with a blurry newsroom image. Then I select “live TV” and then wait for several minutes with a blank screen. If I don’t give up after waiting and waiting and force quit the app, it might show me some “channels” but doesn’t play anything, so I select “live TV” again. Then it says I’m not authorized to play the content (I am; I have a cable subscription and I logged in with CNN with the proper credentials). And then it might load and start to show actual content but then eventually the wheel starts spinning. So I wait again. Then I get maybe 10 or 20 more minutes of watching before it starts spinning again, or asks me to select what I want to watch again, or just kicks me out of the app entirely.

This is BAD.

I have forced quit the app, cleared the app cache, cleared the app data, restarted my Firestick, restarted my router … honestly I cannot even remember all the stupid things I’ve tried that made no difference.

It’s been about 24 hours of this nonsense and I’m DONE. Deleting the app. Maybe they’ll get it right someday. I’m not wasting any more time on it.

Just for the record: my wifi is fine otherwise. I have a business ISP for my work with a very fast connection. Also, all the other content with my Firestick works fine, except for this and MSNBC, which I can’t even log into. Cable news orgs need to get it together.

Usually getting this to start initially for the day is a trial. It gets easier during the day but the next day all is forgotten and the difficulties start again.

Unfortunately I had to take my Internet speed up from 100m to 400m to get unlimited data given that I was charged for over usage beyond my 250g cap up somewhere around 380g. That's what 100% streaming has done for me.

Incidentally my Suddenlink Internet provider has cut out my use of live streaming through this app stating that it was a trial that is no longer available. No live use continues to work.

The CNN app offers many on-demand replays of series and specials, all of which is great. However, I have noticed a particular bug when playing, for example, Inside Politics or GPS from an on-demand replay. The video and audio start out perfectly in synch, but as soon as the content breaks for commercial, the program never comes back with audio synched up correctly. All the series seem to behave this way, its not an anomaly in one series. Also, you cannot pause or rewind or ff any of this on-demand video content, it has to just play out or stop altogether and start only from the beginning.

I had used this app on multiple fire TV devices successfully for months. Every few weeks you have to re-authenticate with your cable provider, mine is Spectrum. At some point either by an app update or a change in database of providers, Spectrum is no longer an option. However, for Android CNN app, I can still find Spectrum when asked to re-authenticate. I'm not sure if this is a problem with CNN app Dev or with FireTV

Update: At some point over the last couple months, they got the option for Spectrum cable back. So, now all is good and I am very happy to get the content streamed to my FireTV

This CNN app allows you to get news pieces of the day, by subject. If you have access to CNN via cable or satellite, you can enter your supplier (DISH, Xfinity, etc) and I guess it goes through some sort of check, and then you get emailed a code after your subscription is verified. Then , you enter that code using your FireTV stick. This then allows you to access live streaming of CNN. If you do not have a subscription to CNN, you can only access their pre-recorded news pieces.

Once you get by the basic channels that you pay for such as Prime And Netflex everything becomes very complicated with sign in and 10 minute previews, I have been trying to download and watch CNN Go, What a joke, there is no way that I can spend this much time and from I see, you have to have a provider to sign up to watch it, I got rid of my provider thinking Amazon Firestick would get me away from my old provider, guess what, it does not, many channels are paid channels, that Amazon will charge you after 30 days,
Way to much hassle with a lot of hidden cost, Back up stairs to watch my old reliable Roku, no hidden fees and more selection of channels and a lots less hassle.
I understand paying for Prime and Netflex, both work great and our worth the money, I can watch my shows on demand on the Firestick.
Think about, you cannot even get free LIVE CNN on the Firestick

CNN Go is rated 3 star (of 5) because of the delayed time broadcast. CNN and MSNBC are news channels and should be free. The ads that viewers endure will adequately pay for network costs. Without viewers these or any other tv channel have no value. CNN and MSNBC are available on most cable providers so the apps on mobile or streaming devices simply provide more viewers, a bonus to the networks. In fact technology will in the future make cable providers obsolete. Improved internet access and capacity on future TV's will be the transmission tunnel for TV viewing. In addition Satellite transmission will provide channel access to non-internet remote areas. The sooner TV channels switch from cable to purely internet access at no additional cost to viewers the better.
