Call Me Crazy: A Memoir Paperback – March 4, 2003

THE NATIONAL AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

As an actress, she lives in the world of illusion made to seem real. As a survivor of abuse, she's learned how to live in her own skin -- and face the reality of a broken past on her own terms.

Filled with unsparing candor and honesty, Call Me Crazy captures with poignancy and surprising humor Anne Heche's struggle to quiet her demons, both real and imagined. This galvanizing memoir reveals the woman behind the headlines, one who has conquered overwhelming odds and come to terms with her painful upbringing. Empowering and thought-provoking, warmhearted and wise, Call Me Crazy offers a crystalline snapshot of the heart and soul of a woman who has traveled a terrifying inner landscape in search of personal fulfillment -- and who has emerged happy, whole, and strong.

I've always liked Anne as an actress, have seen some of her movies, and now have read her second book. Some are saying this is a memoir or autobiography, but it's not so much this as it is an inspirational, self-help book interspersed with some tidbits from her life. The book is only 5" x 7" and about 138 pages long, but it's filled with many lessons Anne learned from her own life, and she is passing those lessons on to us.

Unfortunately, Anne was killed in an accident before this book went to press; therefore, she'll never see the results of passing on her wisdom. (It was in the process of being published)

So many celebrities get a bad rap just because they're celebrities, but many are on a serious, spiritual journey of self-discovery. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it if you enjoy learning from what others have learned on this adventure we call life.

Anne Heche is the finest actress of her generation; a multi-talented chameleon whose performances have ranged from outrageous comedy (Six Days Seven Nights) to heartbreaking tragedy (Return To Paradise). But like so many other great actresses before her, that versatility did not come without a great deal of personal pain and abuse. After 31 years of near 'insanity,' Heche has finally cleared her soul of the childhood traumas that tortured her. From the closeted gay father who raped and beat her repeatedly, to the mother who let it happen and has yet to apologize or face the reality of her psychic damage, Heche's nightmares manifested themselves in a break with reality -- the creation of a second, Jesus-like personality she called Celestia. Fundamentalist Christians are warned to keep away, but the open-minded reader will welcome the revelations offered. A child of abuse who has survived to tell her tale, Heche offers a lucid, well-written autobiography that I read in a single evening. For the empathetic, this is a very tough read -- I fought back tears more than once -- but rest assured the story has a happy ending. I only hope that her new husband and expectant child will continue to enrich her life and give her the freedom and happiness she deserves. Go Annie!

Not quite what I was expecting but I still very much enjoyed it. I feel sad that Anne didn’t follow her own advice as was apparent from the details of her death but none of us are perfect. I think her last relationship which was another disappointment in her quest for love caused her to unravel & led to her final tragic demise.
I would like to think she’s now at peace….

Call Me Crazy: A Memoir - a lot of personal pain and emotion went into Anne Heche's book. The lower rating is because I felt that it could have benefited from heavy editing. Her story, nonetheless, is moving, and it's a testament to her strength and courage to keep her career moving forward. It's obvious that Anne was not totally healthy when this was written, but parts of it are very interesting.

They say there is a thin line between insanity and genius. That line, I say, is brilliance. The words leap off the page in a dance of brilliance as Heche courageously seeks, finds, and shares the truth of her existence. It's an interesting read, a well written albeit agonizing journey that had me turning the pages fast, to see what happens next, and then slowly, to savor the crafting of each sentence. The book is controversial in that it throws light into the darkest corners of our lives, and our culture. It is painful in that it is so true. It is exhilirating in the way one human being finds her way through the darkness, facing her demons, to conquer any residual shame and humiliation. The shame is not hers. It belongs to people who can hear a child cry in the night, laugh, and look the other way. Heche's mother is concerned with what everybody else thinks, and how she, as a mother, appears in the face of Anne's herstory. It's no wonder Anne has had to work so hard to take care of herself.

This is a self-serving whine about tragedies that beset one family and offers no sympathy for parents, siblings, or the circumstances which brought them to despair. Unlike her older sister's book ("Anonymity" by Susan Heche Berman), a painful, poetic, and empathetic re-examination of life lived and distorted by the phenomena of masked homesexuality, untimely death, and the struggle of survivors to overcome, Heche's diabribe brims with venom. It's vile language and unsubstantiated accusations reveal a fatally flawed human being who has achieved fame and fortune, but not inner peace. This is not a book for teens who idolize Hollywood stars; marked by vulgarity and disrepect for the dead and living, it is a sad commentary on Miss Heche and the world she inhabits.

My disappointment is because I wanted more of Anne's story, not her philosophy. Her outlook on life was open and positive. I'm sure it got her through many hardships and will help others. I, however, wanted to learn about her life in the midst of making the movies I so love. I found her entertaining and admired her craft. I wanted to learn what was going on in her life underlying each movie. Her life was blessed in so many ways. She remained unique and positive throughout.

I can’t remember what made me want to read this book and I do remember that I had heard about and Anne Heche going crazy in someone’s yard.

I was just a little curious so maybe that’s why I read it. But what I got out of this book is so much more than I ever expected and she is so wise and so loving and I think her story could help so many people and if you don’t know Why you might want to read it, just read it!

It's easily read in a day. If you are a fan of Anne or looking for some positivity and encouragement in your life - this book is for you.
Anne is genuinely kind and wants us to all be and do better so we can find our happiness, the key to which is love. She encourages like a friend while sharing experiences that taught her all she shares with us.
I laughed and cried but most of all I smiled because Anne may not be with us but her energy and intention are shining.

I loved this actress. Hate that her legacy is her manner of death. The toxicology report when it came weeks and weeks later proved she wasn't under the influence of anything when she crashed. Perhaps a stroke? No one knows, but something obviously happened. This is a book suggesting ways to live a life of love and appreciation, even trying to overcome previous trauma. A beautiful soul gone too soon.
