Born in Edinburgh, Scotland and educated at the University of Dundee, I write in a variety of genres, from academic history to folklore, historical fiction to fantasy. I won the Dundee International Book Prize with my novel 'Whales for the Wizard' in 2005 and was a winner in the People's Book Prize with 'The Darkest Walk' in 2011. In 2021 my 18th century military novel, 'Blood Oath' won the military fiction prize awarded by the Society for Army Historical Research.

Happily married for 41 years, I have three grown children and live just outside Dundee in eastern Scotland.

I was a little concerned when I saw Archibald was continuing the Windrush stories by introducing a son. But I overall enjoyed the Windrush books so I gave these new ones a try. I'm glad I did. The first two take place in South Africa and were fine. The third takes place in Burma and that's why it's my favorite. The first Windrush took place there and I really like the location. Archibald seems to have his history and geography down. His fight scenes are exciting and he sprinkles the stories with cultural insights. Now if the next Baird (the son) book goes to Afghanistan to fight the Great Game, I'll be a happy reader. My favorite historical war novels take place there.

My only complaint is about the women. Both the main women in the two series, seem a little too modern for the stories. The books are basically 'Boy's Own Books' for adults and I read them for the adventure aspect not romance, anyway. That said the romances are compelling enough that I can tolerate them.

I gave this book 5 stars and maybe 4 and a half would have been more appropriate but they are fun and rousing books and if you're looking for an exciting read, I recommend this, and all the Windrush, books,

Every story the author writes is so well done it is alost trite to repeat praises for his works. His tales of young Captain Baird have not changed my mind in that respect. The characters live in Malcolm's words, the places to which the characters travel come alive in a different context than that of the present. And always there are the attitudes, the abilities, the choices, the leadership, the professionalism of the soldiers of the British Army, and the sailors of the British Navy. In the end his stories show his background as a military man, and his love of history and the role of military men and their women in that history. Curahee Malcolm. Another wonderful story leading the reader to places and times never to be seen again.
