Percival Everett's blistering satire about race and publishing, now adapted for the screen as AMERICAN FICTION, directed by Cord Jefferson and starring Jeffrey Wright and Tracee Ellis Ross

Thelonious "Monk" Ellison's writing career has bottomed out: his latest manuscript has been rejected by seventeen publishers, which stings all the more because his previous novels have been "critically acclaimed." He seethes on the sidelines of the literary establishment as he watches the meteoric success of
We's Lives in Da Ghetto, a first novel by a woman who once visited "some relatives in Harlem for a couple of days." Meanwhile, Monk struggles with real family tragedies―his aged mother is fast succumbing to Alzheimer's, and he still grapples with the reverberations of his father's suicide seven years before.

In his rage and despair, Monk dashes off a novel meant to be an indictment of Juanita Mae Jenkins's bestseller. He doesn't intend for
My Pafology to be published, let alone taken seriously, but it is―under the pseudonym Stagg R. Leigh―and soon it becomes the Next Big Thing. How Monk deals with the personal and professional fallout galvanizes this audacious, hysterical, and quietly devastating novel.

Review

**A the New York Times "100 Best Books of the 21st Century"**
**One of The Atlantic's "Great American Novels"**

“Erasure is as watertight and hilarious a satire as, say, [Evelyn Waugh's] Scoop . . . [Everett] is a first-rate word wrangler.” ―Nicholas Lezard, The Guardian

“With equal measures of sympathy and satire, [
Erasure] craftily addresses the highly charged issue of being ‘black enough' in America.” ―Jenifer Berman, The New York Times Book Review

“An over-the-top masterpiece. . . . Percival's talent is multifaceted, sparked by a satiric brilliance that could place him alongside Wright and Ellison as he skewers the conventions of racial and political correctness.” ―
Publishers Weekly

“A scathingly funny look at racism and the book business: editors, publishers, readers, and writers alike.” ―
Booklist

“More genuine and tender than much of Everett's previous work, but no less impressive intellectually: a high point in an already substantial literary career.” ―
Kirkus Reviews

“The sharp satire on American publishers and American readers that Everett puts forward is delicious, though it won't win him many friends among the sentimental educated class who want to read something serious about black inner-city life without disturbing any of their stereotypes.” ―
Chicago Tribune

“Few works dismantle liberal pieties about racial politics as deftly and thoroughly as Everett’s Erasure. . . . The aesthetically layered masterpiece offers a scathing critique of American racism even as it dramatizes, through Monk’s extended reflections on the purpose of art, the absurdity of the idea that Black artists must always write about race.” ―Meghan O'Rourke, The Atlantic's “Great American Novels”

Very humorous with sharp insights into modern American culture. it is also interesting to compare it to the movie, "American Fiction" which was based on this novel. The movie gives a much different resolution to the story and comparing the two is a thoughtful exercise. Very entertaining.

“I decided to see if the store had any of my books… I went to Literature…to Contemporary Fiction… I found a section called African American Studies and there…were four of my books including my Persians of which the only thing ostensibly African American was my jacket photograph… Someone interested in African American Studies would have little interest in my books and would be confused by their presence in the section. Someone looking for an obscure reworking of a Greek tragedy would not consider looking in that section any more than the gardening section. The result in either case, no sale. That [!&#%@] store was taking food from my table.” (p28)

Monk, the protagonist of this extraordinary novel, doesn’t generally write “Black” books. Nor should folks expect him to. So why is he so upset that a woman from Akron wrote a best-selling novel about Black life in Harlem? Well, it’s complicated.

You may know Percival Everett from his more recent bestseller “James”. If so, you won’t be surprised to learn that “Erasure” challenges assumptions, expectations, stereotypes. No, let me amend that. This novel doesn’t just challenge – it skewers, eviscerates, and destroys. Everett’s list of targets is long: it includes racism, cultural appropriation, commercialism, post-modernism, and elitism. Much of the book is quite funny, with mountains of irony and biting satire.

Fair warning, though – “Erasure” is a more difficult read than “James”. It’s edgy, raw, and disorienting in ways that “James” is not. It’s structurally and emotionally complex; you’ll need to expend some elbow grease to hold on to the thread. It simultaneously shouts and whispers, and it oscillates between lyrically poignant and consciously offensive. Expect a multilayered story, abrupt transitions, enigmatic asides (sometimes in French, Latin, or German), subtle metaphors, and shrill dog whistles. All in all it’s rough going at times. But it’s worth the effort.

I read Erasure after seeing the film American Fiction. I was curious to see how the original novel had been adapted to the screen. The screenplay is very faithful to the book, but the book is more subtle and has several more layers of meaning and narrative. Most importantly, it has humor, irony and it is a great reading.

Percival Everett aims high. Characters are fully realized, settings detailed and particular, plots cohesive. But beneath that, each of his books tackles a set of ‘big ideas.’ In ERASURE, they are identity, truth, racism, secrecy, deceit, and cultural expectations. Woven in are intellectual, philosophical, and imaginative asides, surprises, and examples of Everett’s extraordinarily wide-ranging knowledge. If you like bing challenged to think, you’ll love his work. ERASURE is particularly relevant to present day America.

Reading Erasure is like reading a darkly comedic indictment of the literary world, cultural assumptions and adaptations, and more. Reading Monk's struggles with identity, his wrestling with his art and the artistic endeavors of others, paralleled with the jarring judgments he crafts--in My Pafology of the world and in both Stagg R Leigh and the novel within a novel's lead of himself--made me wonder how much the novel itself is a "read" of the author, and us as both readers and voyeurs. I felt while reading it that I was as much in on the joke as the butt of one, and I love it for that... as much as I am leary of it. This is definitely worth a read, and a reread, a laugh both of rejoice and of wary... I can't wait to dig into more of what Ellison--I mean, Everett has to offer!

This book was interesting to read. I mostly read it before I watched the movie. I think the movie will be better. I didn’t understand why the Hitler references, and all the boring English gobbledygook. I felt sad for the main character who was suddenly successful but had no more family in his life and he was alone. If he would have just written books about what was going on in his life or made characters from the people in his own life I’m sure he’d have been much happier and less suicidal feelings than being a hermit. Honestly, I wouldn’t buy this book again if I knew how bad it was. As a disclaimer I’m white, and really think that blacks have the same chance to living a good life the same as a white person does but it’s the decisions one makes in their lives and if you associate with losers you’ll be a loser. You associate with a winner till be a winner. Winning in life is about the choices you make and the life you want to live.

Where do I start, this book was just such a pleasure to read. It is comical, very honest, but most of all it is so heartwarming.
As a reader you just come help but feel for the main character Monk, whether it be through the obstacles he faces an an author or with his home life.
Certainly if not in my top 10 books of all time, then most definitely in my top 20.

I am a big fan of Percival Everett and his books. Characters and plots are so insanely unpredictable. This book talks about a writer, consumer taste and the madness of the publishing industry. Quite relateable to what one can see on the book market throughout the last years. Great!
