Immigration: Individual vs National Borders Kindle Edition

Scott Horton:

“This book is a must read for anyone who has scratched their head when hearing ‘libertarians’ and Austrian economists espousing national borders to keep people from pursuing voluntary interaction with each other across these artificially-imposed dividing lines. Do libertarians really want government—this most violent, destructive, lawless and abusive government—to bar peaceful people from traveling or from trading with others? In his great Immigration: Individual vs. National Borders, David Hathaway ably refutes the intellectual arguments put forth by some Austro-libertarians to keep the state involved in immigration. Case closed. Freedom wins.”

Will Grigg:

“The means we employ are the ends in the making, and the issue of immigration and border policy is not an exception to that principle. In this conscientious, respectful, and carefully reasoned essay, David Hathaway offers a critical examination of what has been called the ‘realistic libertarian’ perspective on immigration—namely, that state-enforced restrictions on immigration are compatible with the non-aggression principle and property rights. If the end we seek is an individualistic society liberated from state-licensed violence, state-centered means cannot get us there—and Hathaway’s professional and philosophic background makes him uniquely qualified to explain why this is so.”

On the immigration question, it would, alas, in some circles seem so. For those of us who are baffled by arguments that, on libertarian terms, endorse state aggression against peaceful travel, commerce, and association -- or those new to the freedom philosophy who, upon hearing this from respected luminaries, think they must just be missing something -- Hathaway's book is a brilliantly concise and essential read.

Excellent book. Unfortunately there are some within the libertarian movement who have immigration as a blind spot, that is they randomly support this one government program (forbidding people from crossing borders) even though they should by a correct application of libertarian principles not have this position. This book does a very good job of tearing apart the fallacious arguments used by some libertarians to advance this wrong-headed idea.
