A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A “fascinating and very moving” (Aaron Sorkin, award-winning screenwriter of The West Wing and The Social Network) chronological timeline spanning from Biblical times to today that explores one of the most interesting countries in the world—Israel.

Israel. The small strip of arid land is 5,700 miles away but remains a hot-button issue and a thorny topic of debate. But while everyone seems to have a strong opinion about Israel, how many people actually know the facts?

Here to fill in the information gap is Israeli American Noa Tishby. But “this is not your Bubbie’s history book” (Bill Maher, host of
Real Time with Bill Maher). Instead, offering a fresh, 360-degree view, Tishby brings her “passion, humor, and deep intimacy” (Yossi Klein Halevi, New York Times bestselling author of Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor) to the subject, creating an accessible and dynamic portrait of a tiny country of outsized relevance. Through bite-sized chunks of history and deeply personal stories, Tishby chronicles her homeland’s evolution, beginning in Biblical times and moving forward to cover everything from WWI to Israel’s creation to the disputes dividing the country today. Tackling popular misconceptions with an abundance of facts, Tishby provides critical context around headline-generating controversies and offers a clear, intimate account of the richly cultured country of Israel.

Am Yisrael Chai
There is a LOT of information squeezed into this one book. If you already follow Noa on social, then you know that she tells it like it is. Straight to the point. No BS. And this book is certainly no exception.Israel is, indeed, a very misunderstood tiny sliver of land tucked snugly in the Middle East. As an American, I feel that we’re made to assume it’s not a “safe” place to visit. I bought this book to read in preparation for a trip to Israel that I just got back from. I can say with 200% certainty that I felt safe 100% of the time. But sadly that’s only one, of the many, misunderstandings about this beautiful state. It has a rich history in Jerusalem, a thriving city life in Tel Aviv, and so much innovation across the Negev, it’s not even comprehensible.Noa explains about her personal family history and it’s ties to Israel. She also opens up about the evolution of her singing/acting/producing turned political activist career.Whether you’re Jewish or not, a fan of Israel or not, this book is a MUST REED! Her passion for Israel’s past, present and future shines bright.

I found this book to be full of heart, information, and facts. It dispels many myths about Israel and it does so unapologetically. There's plenty of examination of Israel's flaws, but unlike many of the books out there, those flaws are put into context. It seems so much of what is written on Israel is hyper-critical--by that I mean picking apart every flaw, including many that exist in all societies, without talking about how things came to be. This book, on the other hand, is written from the standpoint that the Israeli argument is also valid, and it's good (for once) to see *both* sides presented. This gives a balanced factual representation of the history of the state, warts and all. The only thing it does unflinchingly that some might consider unbalanced, is it assumes Israel has a right to be where it is. I know people for whom that would be evidence of Israeli bias. But really, believing that a country has the right not to be destroyed is a basic assumption that is made for every country on earth except for Israel. The author does not take the cowardly path of some texts and allow this to be a debating point. It should not be a debating point in real life, and it is not in this book. But beyond that, the book is full of self-deprecation, history, and yes, also a tiny bit of the Israeli point of view. I found it very refreshing.

Also, I see some of the expected reviews by the reflexive Israel-deniers, who use the tired trope "Hasbara talking points" to refer to this book (just to be clear, the whole thing is extremely well-cited). One of the statements there is that Noa Tishby lies when she says that Palestinians left on their own instead of being pushed out. One little problem: she never said that. I'm not surprised the reflexive types didn't actually read this book before reviewing. Here's what she actually said: "Historians still debate exactly how many Arabs fled on their own and how many were pushed out by the Israeli army. And yes, let's be clear: In that war, there were indeed Arabs who got pushed out." She then goes on to cite Benny Morris, who has documented all of this, and she mentions Deir Yassin massacre. But unlike the universal anti-Israel screeds you'll read, she also applies *context* to those events. This was a war of annihilation by the Arabs, one in which, had they won, would have seen all the Jews pushed into the sea (by the words of the Arab leaders of the day). The "ethnic cleansing" occurred on a war the Arabs started, and the intent of the Arabs toward the Jews was far worse than expulsion. Had the Arabs accepted the partition, there would today be no refugees and no conflict. This, also, is fact.

What I very much like about Noa Tishby's book is that she does provide all the facts, but she ALSO provides context so you can evaluate the whole thing together. That is very rare for any book on this conflict.

Given the recent rise of anti Semitism, it is time for a true lesson about the beginnings and current state of Israel by a liberal Israeli now working in the U.S. The book gives facts most who live outside of Israel simply don’t know. We here are entitled to our opinions but they should be educated opinions. Educate yourself. This is a well written way to do that.

Tishby does a great job of relaying the history of the State of Israel from it's inception through her eyes and those of her family before she was born. This is not a typical book of history . It's written in a very informal way by a woman more attuned to the world of entertainment than history. She made some great points about how Israel has on a few occasions offered to give the West Bank to the Palestinians as their own state but didn't adequately explained why they have continued to expand the Jewish settlements. Overall, a very enlightening book.

I’m reading books on all sides of the conflict. This one was one of the better in that it’s not too preachy. She has lots of citations that I researched and found them to be legitimate. I have multiple advanced degrees and often have to put books down if I’m detecting heavy bias. This author is very fair. One minor thing is that she occasionally gets too colloquial in her word use. But she also gets right down to the facts about both sides of the argument. Great primer for those who want to understand the context of what is happening. It’s not an overly complex academic account but there are citations available for a deeper explanation. I’ve now read multiple books on the subject and I appreciate her attempt to offer counterpoints to her own. Not every author attempts to be this balanced. She has a viewpoint for sure but it’s offered in a way that didn’t make me tune her out: I became more interested.

It can get tedious for some to read the details provided in a history book. Noa Tishby’s brilliance in this book is making it seem ordinary, when in fact it is quite far from ordinary. It’s informative, honest, and erases the blur between fact and fiction. If you don’t like it’s because it’s so true that it goes against your beliefs. That’s okay, but let it make you take a micro step towards checking Ms. Tishby’s facts. Slowly, hopefully, you will recognize that there are two sides of a story. One is truthful and the other is manipulated. Learn the difference and start here with Noa Tishby’s eye-opening book.

I have always been interested in and have researched the history of Israel from ancient times on. This book, though it does not go all the way back in history, is a go-to for information that is accurate on the situation in the Middle East.
