Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me: Debunking the False Narratives Defining America's School Curricula Kindle Edition

A college professor debunks the myths that have infiltrated America's school curricula.

In 1995, James W. Loewen penned the classic work of criticism Lies My Teacher Told Me, a left-leaning corrective that addressed much of what was sanitized and omitted from American history books.

But in the decades that followed, false leftist narratives—as wrong as those they supplanted—have come to dominate American academia and education. Now, in the same spirit but updated for 2024, Wilfred Reilly demolishes the scholastic myths propagated by the left, uncovers fresh angles on “established” events, and turns what we think we know about history upside down. Among the popular lies he debunks:

  • “The ‘Red Scare’ was a moral panic that caught no commies”
  • “Native Americans were peaceful people who spent all day dancing”
  • “European colonialism was—empirically—a no-good, terrible, very bad thing”
  • “The racist ‘Southern Strategy’ turned the South Republican”
  • “The Vietnam War was unpopular and pointless”

Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me sets the record straight on many of these myths, explaining that there actually were communists in Hollywood; that many Native American tribes were cannibals, owned slaves and made them march the Trail of Tears with them; and that history, while almost always bad for Black Americans, was much worse for all of us than we tend to think it was.

Smart, irreverent, and deeply researched, Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me will revolutionize your understanding of history and reveal a new and refreshing way to teach and think about the past.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Wilfred Reilly is the indispensable man in today’s politics: brash, fearless, hilarious, and insightful, he frustrates his enemies as he baffles with hard realities. Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me is a vital work, and everyone interested in politics should have a copy on the bookshelf.” — Ben Shapiro

“Wilfred Reilly channels the spirit of Thomas Sowell in his new book, Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me, which masterfully debunks left-wing talking points on race, sex, colonialism, and more. Reilly is a fearless writer who delights in confronting long-standing taboos and marshaling social science to correct the recording. This book is the antidote to mindless liberalism.” — Christopher F. Rufo

Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me is the perfect book for combating the false narratives and fake history that have robbed too many high school and college students of critical thinking skills. Using facts and data, Reilly takes readers on an unforgettable journey that will leave them wondering what other lies they have believed.” — Carol M. Swain

History education is indispensable in training the next generation of thinkers and citizens. It is important to be impartial, fair and honest. That which has happened, will likely happen again, may be only a little different. That said, we owe it to ourselves to take an unbias and critical look into the past. This book is an eye opener because it shows how deeply liberal myths and lies permeate american history. There are a lot of jaw dropping truths. It is a fair and worthy read.

"Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me” is an essential tool for anyone who values truth and integrity in education. Reilly’s meticulous research and compelling arguments make the strongest of cases for reevaluating the narratives that have long dominated American classrooms. It is a must-read for anyone committed to understanding the full scope of American history and the narrative-driven battles that continue to shape our future.

The clever title of this book is spot on. It methodically challenges several ideas that are presented as plain fact in modern society. The reoccurring theme is that history is messy and complicated, and that’s ok. The book will occupy a prominent place on my bookshelf, next to the author’s other titles, until my kids are old enough to read it. Excited to see what he writes next!

Very well footnotes from actual truth. Unlike left leaning books that quote Newsweek or The New York Post. So much research went into this I'm blown away. Makes me appreciate that there is Fox News exposing the media narrative lies.

Excellent and necessary. The best work of the author's to date. Everyone stands to gain by reading this book, especially those who teach and/or prefer to take charge of their own educations.

Expertly researched and thoroughly documented, Prof. Reilly effectively critiques some of the foundational beliefs underlying present leftist political views. He’s also a consistently interesting and at times quite entertaining writer, and I found the book difficult to put down. Highly recommended!

This is the book I wish I would have read at 16 years old, would have saved me tons of embarrassing moments. Can't recommend this highly enough, people who know the lies will learn new things, and people who believe them will be humbled beyond belief.
