From the authors of the Irrelationship series comes an insightful guidebook for enhancing the most vital relationship in every person's life—the one they have with themselves.

Making Your Crazy Work for You adopts the irrelationship model to present a step-by-step program for self-understanding and catalyzing change. Our "crazy" refers to our unique reaction to our own pain, fear, and anxiety brought on by isolation from others and ourself. This unrecognized isolation can occur even when we are surrounded by other people in our daily lives. However, by learning to listen to our craziness, we can use it as a tool for ending isolation and opening up to love.

Drawn from the authors' personal experience and clinical practice, each chapter features new case studies, exercises, and tools to help readers to

  • reverse unhealthy behavior patterns
  • learn to access their genuine emotions, needs, and ideas
  • create better relationships

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Childhood, for most of us, was a trauma from which we may not yet have recovered nor yet understand, which these brilliant authors call ‘Your Crazy.’ In this scintillating book, you will find not only the source of this almost universal condition but an explanation of what it is and what you can do to move from ‘crazy’ to ‘sanity.’ We commend their compelling solution and recommend this book to everyone who may have suffered trauma or who wants to understand others who have.”—Harville Hendrix, PhD, and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhDNew York Times-bestselling authors of Doing IMAGO Relationship Therapy in the Space-Between

“A powerful, landmark book with a novel approach to dealing with developmental trauma and all the challenges it brings in cultivating true self-love and intimacy with another. The authors take you on an eye-opening journey where your most shameful vulnerabilities are explored and transcended in the process of ‘making your crazy work for you.’ A must-read!”—Diana Kirschner, PhD, author of the international bestseller, Love in 90 Days

“A phenomenal book about how our human experience of loss and grief bonds us more than we think. The authors draw from different disciplines, illuminating how our early experiences and the hurts they have caused can lead to a fragmented sense of self. We learn how to re-integrate these pieces back into our lives with patience, love, compassion, and understanding. We do this so that we can feel whole again, and maybe only to learn that we were never actually broken in the first place. This book is a must read for those who want to live a little lighter. I know I do!”—Sue Varma, MD, DFAPA, board certified psychiatrist, author of the forthcoming book Practical Optimism

“This book masterfully explains how to turn your crazy into a tool that can help enhance your personal and professional relationships. We all have some crazy in us! Why not benefit from your crazy? This book will teach you how.”—Tom Shanahan, author of Spiritual Adrenaline: A Lifestyle Plan to Nourish and Strengthen Your Recovery

"There are a lot of books out there on ‘self-love’ and ‘having a better relationship with yourself,’ but this book stands out for its depth, intelligence, and accessibility. Based on extensive research and written by experts with significant clinical experience, it is an immensely enjoyable read and a must for anyone who feels they need a mental reset to optimize their lives. If you want to understand how your past and current habits are holding you back, and how to craft a successful life moving forward, look no further. This book is a gem and I highly recommend it.”—Srini Pillay, MD, Harvard-trained psychiatrist and brain researcher, author of Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind

"Making Your Crazy Work for You is a practical guide to help increase self-awareness and should be read by anyone interested in improving relationships in their life, at work and at home.”—Dr. Santor Nishizaki, award-Winning CEO, author, and business school professor

That love is transformative is the main point of Borg, Brenner and Berry's third volume in the "Irrelationship" series. And this transformational potential includes self-love and how this can heal old wounds that have created splits in our experience of self. "Making Your Crazy Work for You" provides a clear process for welcoming back into our awareness, our lives and our relationships, those parts of ourselves that were lost (dissociated) as a result of early childhood trauma. The road to self-compassion, -acceptance and -love is clearly mapped out by the authors as a way out of the isolation that was the result of early trauma. This isolation and the concomitant loneliness is what the authors refer to as "crazy," and this book is a key for liberating ourselves from the craziness of being cut off from others and ourselves.

Wow!!! This is a must read for anyone who grew up in a challenging developmental environment or is in a close relationship with such a person. I would also recommend for anyone who wants to deepen their relationship with themselves in order to interact more wisely and broadly within their community to bring about positive change. Borg, Brenner and Berry methodically develop a practical strategy for how to address one's emotional needs by drawing on years of clinical experience and varied backgrounds while also providing plenty of practical examples and applications. It may sound crazy, but I believe this book will be transformative for readers, especially those who have not yet worked out how to get on the right path with themselves.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The premise here is that most everyone has some childhood trauma from which we may not yet have recovered or have yet to understand. The authors call this “your crazy.” The book shows you how to find the source of this universal condition and identify your particular brand of crazy and then transform it into greater sanity. This is a unique approach to dealing with childhood trauma that, in a sense, normalizes and lightens its load so we can approach ourselves and each other with greater compassion. Highly recommended.
