MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG has been a flop since it opened on Broadway in the early 80s, but Sondheim lovers (and I count myself among them) have always loved Sondheim's gorgeous score. The show opened and closed on Broadway within 16 performances in 1981 with a string of stinging reviews. Forty years would go by with revivals out of town that didn't work. Worse, Sondheim and Harold Prince, who had collaborated with the composer on such hits as COMPANY, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC and SWEENEY TODD, didn't work together for another twenty years. Then Maria Friedman, a British musical star who played the lead in the original London cast, and had become a friend of Sondheim's and a director, revived the show in a renovation by the composer and the show's author, George Firth. It was her first production as a director. Her concept was simple, concentrate of this great friendship of forty years with three principals over a forty year period. The show finally had found its audience, and brought the critics along with them. Friedman directed a revival in Boston in 2017. It too struck a chord with the audiences who saw it. Finally a Broadway production with Friedman directing, was set for the 2023 season. As the liner notes to this excellent recording reveal, Friedman focuses on the relationship with three life-long friends over a 40 year period. Those principals are Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and they are terrific here as actors, and singers. The show is stuffed with so many fine songs: "Merrily We Roll Along," "Old Friends," "Growing Up," "Not a Day Goes By," "Good Thing Going," and "Opening Doors." Sadly Sondheim died in 2021, two years before this revival re-emerged triumphantly on Broadway. It won four Tony Awards, including Jonathan Groff for best actor in a musical and Daniel Radcliffe, best featured actor in a musical. Since Sondheim's death at age 9, Broadway has seen a number of revivals of his many fine shows, and that has been the case for along time. Sondheim now must be the most revived musical composer on Broadway, and that would includes shows by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter. MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG will now join his roster of great shows that will received revivals again and again over the years. The new Sony Masterworks recording ought to insure that.

I have long appreciated the MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG score, having seen it twice way back in its disappointing initial run. There have been several fine recordings of Sondheim's music. But in terms of heart, humor, and humanity, this album is my favorite. Perhaps my opinion is based on my admiration for Jonathan Groff's warm singing (a John Raitt for the current age) and my enjoyment of Lindsay Mendez's superb sense of humor. Just one of the many technical aspects of this recording that I appreciate is that the choral parts are recorded with such clarity and crispness so that you hear every delicious word. Even if you have other MERRILY recordings, I suggest you add this one to your shelf (or your playlist). The accompanying booklet, by the way, includes every lyric - as well as some swell photos of the production.

I was fortunate enough to have seen this show in NYC in October/23 in the 12th row no less and was completely thrilled. Lucky to meet the stars after the show. Best show I've seen on Broadway in years. Spectacular recording. I actually saw the original in 1981 when it was a flop. Now it's such a huge hit you can't get tickets for months. This recording that they didn't even announce was going to happen happened and nobody is happier than those lucky enough to have been there and seen the original cast. GREAT show, GREAT Sondheim, some of his very best songs.........and beautiful interpretations by the entire cast. If you can't get to Broadway, get the recording, you won't be sorry.

Whether this is the definitive version of Merrily We Roll Along or not (that is for you to decide), it is still an important addition to the catalogue of recordings celebrating the genius of Stephen Sondheim.
Having Daniel Radcliffe in the cast, may also help introduce a new generation of listeners to the wonderful world of musical theatre.
Having had the pleasure of playing Franklin Shepherd myself, about 20 years ago, I just wish that I had been able to see this particular performance in person. But this recording is a great consolation prize.
