As always the author creates characters whose courage rises from the pages he pens. In this first essay into the world of Andrew Baird, whose name you will learn is very recognizable, has traveled to Africa to make his name, earn his reputation. While there Andrew becomes deeply enmeshed in the Zulu war resulting in huge victories for the natives in the early days of the war. I won't tell you about the entire story. You will have to read for yourself. I will say that the book is masterfully wrtten with a thorough study of the British failures at Island.----- (cannot spell that one properly), The characters are created by an author who makes them live, breathe, makes their voices ring in your ears. Oh this one is very well worth the price you will pay no matter which version you buy. Another great book by a truly gifted writer, starting what for certain is another series of advnetures.

If you've read any of the author's Windrush series, you'll have an idea what to expect here, and you won't be disappointed. Andrew Baird, son of 'Fight Jack' Windrush begins this story in Colonial South Africa as a member of the Frontier Armed and Mounted Police wanting to make a future, without trading on his father's name and soon finds himself in the midst of the fighting as King Cetshwayo's Zulu army goes into battle against the British. Before long, the mounted police are conscripted into the army and after proving himself in battle, Andrew is commissioned. Along the way, he meets two young Colonial sisters and falls in love with the elder of the two. When war takes its toll and Elaine and her family are slaughtered with the younger daughter, Mariana carried off to meet an unknown fate, Andrew vows to somehow find her and save her.
There’s a war to be fought however, and the author doesn't hold back in his descriptions of the horrors of 19th century warfare, the blood and the gore of man to man, hand to hand fighting.
There’s no let up in the action as Andrew and his men fight their way through battle after battle keeping the reader glued to the pages, and in my case, not wanting to put the book down, needing to know what happens next.
A superb follow-up to the Windrush series, I can see another great series in the making and look forward to reading the next instalment in the life of Lieutenant Andrew Baird. A terrific 5 star read.
