I am a movie goer, a film enthusiast--Tarentino could be a brother from a different mother.
Poor Things is everything I want in a great film: great acting, superb script, stunning cinematography, and an original approach to the project. Is this movie for everybody? Certainly not, but I would say the same of The Fall by Tarsem Singh and Cloud Atlas by Tom Tykwer and the Wachowski sisters.
Emma Stone is simply amazing, as are Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe. Production design, coupled with the Victorian era backdrop, exceeds "fantastic." Poor Things is truly a feast for the eyes.
My only criticism is that the nudity, while necessary to the story told, is too much. Tighter shots would have made the points intended. The sex depicted, however, needs no further editing because...
...for me, Bella's evolution is physical, emotional, political, and "empirical." We watch her progress from a tantrum throwing toddler to a medical student, from an egotistical brat to an empathetic "matriarch", from a scientific experiment to a fully formed and fully functioning human being, a woman of character, intelligence and deterimination.
Let me also state that I like action movies (the Mission Impossible series), sci fi movies (Alien, Predator, Star Wars series), and westerns (The Searchers, Good Bad Ugly, True Grit). But, as satisfying as those genres are, films like Poor Things raise the bar of cinematic art, and I'm very happy for that.

I know this movie is so loved (or hated) depending on who you ask. When I finally watched this after hearing everyone and their mother talk about how sexual and graphic it was, I was very surprised. It's not the soft-core porn film that everyone makes it out to be. Is it sexual? Yes. Though nothing that crazy. Beyond all of that, I thought it was a great movie. Very different and it was nice to break away from the usual.

Loved this movie. Too bad they don't try and make good art as much as they used too. It's no fun unless your stretching.

Is it bordering on porn or were there just so many, lengthy sex scenes that it felt like porn? As a woman am I supposed to feel empowered by the "heroine's" sexual exploration (from Milan to Minsk)? The movie felt "overdone" during that particular phase, and the adage about beating a dead horse comes to mind. I'm not sure because I nodded off during sex scenes, mind you (i.e. enough of it to become entirely bored); but I think they may have jumped the shark. Defoe was amazing and totally inhabited his role. Same must be said for Emma and Rufalo as well as supporting actors. Interesting story line, premise, etc., just seemed to veer off course. If that was meant to be the course they should have spared us the interesting part though. I can't say I hated it and in fact there is much to appreciate. But don't think it's appropriate for young minds!

This movie is not only visually astonishing with every character a total work of art, but it makes use of science fiction's best conceits to conjure a story that the viewer thinks is something like Dr. Frankenstein's little adventure, but ends up something more akin to a story reflecting characters fully immersed in a Steampunk universe--i.e., much more advanced in its quirky way. It's a universe where Frankenstein can still build his monster, but the monster isn't what you think it is and Dr. Frankenstein isn't what you think he is, either. (In fact, Poor Things is an entire century beyond the tropes and conceits of Mary Shelley's world. I would say that in some ways, it's a century beyond ours as well.) This is not Mary Shelley's world. It's a totally inspired, uniquely original alternate history that has a story to tell that you have never seen before. I thought I knew what was happening and why up to the very end. I was wrong by a country mile. This is an unabashed masterpiece, and wait until they sit down to dinner . . . .

This review could basically start and end with Emma Stone's performance. Every moment of it shined. She was hilarious, nuanced, and remarkably brave. Almost every moment of the movie has her on the screen, and yet she manages to command every second. Not far behind her in impressiveness was Mark Ruffalo, who hilariously captivated a role that in lesser hands would be an annoyance.

DirectorYorgos Lanthimos has created a world that is nothing like our own and yet believable and fascinating. The attention that was paid to the smallest detail of every scene -- whether boldly cenetered or deep in the background -- is stunning and thrilling.

This is bold movie-making at its very best.

I thought the sets and costumes were beautiful and well done. The whole movie had its own unique style which I loved. The writing and acting were also excellent. For those reasons, I have given it 2 stars instead of 0 stars.

Let me just say, I was really looking forward to this movie. I was excited for the cast and the plot based off the trailer. Unfortunately, I've never wanted to turn off a movie so much. Throughout the movie, the music was just very off-putting. I wish there was a option to watch it without the music. It made me feel was distracted and unnerved, which was possibly the goal but i did not enjoy it. Without giving any spoilers, I really wish they had done more with the general plot of the film. The whole focus of the movie seemed to be perversion and sex which I think really takes away from the femenist goals they aspired to. I also really love sci-fi and science in general so I was hoping for more from that side of things. I love a good female empowering movie but this wasn't it. Bella seemed very unrealistic and unrelateable because of her emotionless obsession with sex, when there was so much potential to do something amazing with the character. Before seeing the film, I watched Emma Stone talk about the movie in a interview saying how she thought it was very freeing to be able to do and say whatever you wanted...but all Bella aspired to, for the majority of the film was have sex. Which is so basic to me. That's like what a young teenager would aspire to, not a powerful woman who knows who she is. It was a bummer and I regret my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Die Überraschung, die einschlägt wie eine
Reviewed in Germany on May 19, 2024

Bellas Entwicklung schreitet schnell voran.
Zuerst ist Sex alles, was sie will.

Bella will jetzt ihre Vergangenheit erforschen.

Sie will WISSEN, sie will kämpfen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Excelente producción, pero historia con mensaje nihilista
Reviewed in Mexico on May 3, 2024
