WHY IS HEART RATE TRAINING THE SMART WAY TO WORKOUT?

Using real-time heart rate data during your workouts means you have instant insight into how your body is responding. This means you'll be training smarter, which is always better than simply training harder.

In a nutshell, smart training that leads to results is based on three variables:

  • Frequency: How many times you exercise during a period of time, for example per week.
  • Duration: How long you exercise at a time, usually counted in minutes.
  • Intensity: This one is a bit more complicated - and that's where your heart rate comes in.

Your heart rate is one of the best indicators of how hard your body is working during training. Instead of trying to "guestimate" the intensity of your workout, your best bet is to rely on your heart rate which is a trackable number, just like frequency and duration.

Good accuracy; More comfortable than a chest strap
4 out of 5 stars
Good accuracy; More comfortable than a chest strap
I've been using a Polar H10 chest strap to record my runs for a couple of years now, but don't really like wearing a chest strap for workouts. Both the Verity Sense Optical Arm Band and the H10 chest strap are vastly more accurate than just using the optical sensor on the Polar watch I pair them with (I suspect this would be true for just about any watch-based sensor but I can't claim to have tried other brands). I'm pleased with the VS arm band's comfort relative to the chest strap; and the fact that it is nearly as accurate is enough for me to switch to the arm band for most of my workouts. I tested them both simultaneously on a couple of workouts after I bought the arm band and was pleased with the results for normal runs and even my typical interval training. I posted the comparison charts I made when I wore both. The H10 responds more quickly. The optical arm band lags the H10 (real HR?) by about 10 seconds, but it was just as accurate in aggregate - unless you need feedback that is nearly instant. Also, I find the arm band a bit less finicky too. The chest strap will "lose the signal" for me on occasion and I'll have to reposition it. In 4 months this hasn't happened with the VS arm band more than once or twice. It does occasionally go slightly off (+/- 10 bpm error) like it did at the end of the sprint interval workout chart I posted, but even this I find rare - certainly less often than with the H10 . You can see the H10 didn't respond for part of the first stride I did near the end of the long run workout as well as for over a minute during the warm up phase at the beginning of the sprint interval workout. During the sprint interval workout, the arm band did miss the peaks. These were nearly all-out sprints though. For anything less than an all-out sprint with arms pumping hard I find the arm band does not miss the heart rate peak. I'm happy to use it for my more regular interval workouts where I'm not going all out. The battery has been great. It lasts for at least a couple weeks worth of workouts (that's maybe 10 workouts x 50 minutes on average) and I probably charge it before I need to more often than not.

I have been wearing a chest HR monitor from Garmin for a couple of years now, the chest strap is paired to a Garmin Fenix watch. The strap is extremely accurate, but honestly i had to buy one every year because once I had to replace the batterie the strap would not work the same. I got tired of having to replace the strap so often, and believe me the first two replacements were provided by Garmin. One option was to go with a watch with HR monitor on the wrist, but the accuracy was not good. i am very glad I found the Polar Verity Sense HR monitor. Batter goes for about 20 hours, recharging the unit is easy and fast. Monitor is as accurate as the chest strap, the only difference I noticed was that the Polar Verity Sense takes a couple of seconds to show the picks of the HR while doing an activity. The same delay applies bringing the HR down, so at the end the numbers balanced out. The other plus about this monitor is how comfortable it is while wearing it on the arm. This monitor is way more comfortable than wearing a chest strap. Well done Polar!!

I have tried to make this product work for more than a year and am finally giving up and throwing it away. The device stopped working within 30 days of purchasing it but because Polar support took so long to respond to my request for assistance, by the time I was able to talk to them, the 30 day deadline had already passed and they refused to accept a return. Instead, each Polar person I spoke with insisted that I run through all the troubleshooting steps on their website that I had already tried multiple times to no avail. It took several weeks to get them to acknowledge that the sensor was not working and send me a “new” one.

I was without the sensor for about a month before the “new” one, which was scratched and obviously used, arrived. It at least connected with the app, but only occasionally records workouts and that is only if the app is displayed on the screen at all times during the workout. If I want to lock my screen and put my phone in a pocket, forget it, I might as well not wear the monitor.

The app itself seems to have been coded by monkeys, it lacks the basic features that Polar’s main app has and has a number of bugs that have not been fixed in the year I’ve had the device. After the last update this week, I can’t connect the device to the app even after restoring the sensor to factory settings.

I have owned Polar chest strap sensors in the past and they were at least decent, but I dislike wearing a chest strap so I ended up purchasing this product. My experience with this product has been that Polar does not stand behind its products, and I might as well have taken the $100 I spent on this device and lit it on fire. After this experience, I won’t be purchasing any more Polar products, and would recommend avoiding this one.

I finally wore out my old Wahoo chest strap heart rate monitor. I went and started my research on all the new products out there. I settled on the arm HR monitors, rather than the chest monitors. To shorten this up, I narrowed it down to three. Of the three, the Polar seemed to have the best accuracy, and had better bluetooth connect-ability should I need it. The other two had much better battery life and were less expensive by $10 and $20. The other two also were easier to recharge.

I decided on the Polar, as the reviews were excellent. People seemed to like the bicep and forearm wearing capability. Very comfy. I agree. I wear it on my forearm and forget it is even on my arm. Not sure how people test, but it also was the most accurate according to what I read. I do have a couple complaints, but they are not deal breakers. First, to recharge the unit, you have to unsnap it from the band, and insert it into a USB type charger, made just for this Polar unit. The little charging unit is so small, I am afraid I am going to lose it. Other HR's just magnetically snap on while still on the band and charge the unit. Second complaint, and it is very nitpicky, is batter life is only about 20 hours. The others out there had up to 30 and 40 hours. One last thing. The on/off button has three modes, so you have to be careful not to put it into one of the other modes, as it will not work. I always check to make sure it is registering on my watch and bike computer.

Summary:
Pros:
Accuracy, comfort, super fast and easy syncing, works terrific (I use it on ANT+ with a Garmin Vivoactive 4, and Garmin 500 bike computer at the same time. Also syncs to my Apple iPhone 11 bluetooth easy)

Cons:
Battery life is 20 hours, must detach unit to recharge, recharge USB unit is tiny and easy to lose, must be careful with on/off button as it has three modes you can accidentally put the unit into.

Summary: I think this unit is a step above the competitors, even though it has a couple cons. I recommend it.

This is the 5th heart rate monitor that I've purchased in the last 3 months. I tried the "lower" priced models available on Amazon, and a chest model from the company that made my elliptical device. ALL 4 of the previous models either didn't work at all, or were awfully inaccurate, or worked for about 2 weeks and then no longer worked at all. This Polar connected immediately was DEAD ON accurate, and easy to use. Maybe twice the cost of the cheap ones, but WELL worth the extra money for something that REALLY works.

I have owned chest strap HRMs since the 1990s. I switched to optical sensors a few years ago. I upgraded to the Polar Verity last year to get 2 channel Bluetooth connectivity. Where chest straps failed regularly at 6-12 months, my Verity is showing no signs of slowing down. It is accurate, comfortable and has good battery life. Two Bluetooth channels mean that I can connect to multiple apps. This is especially useful when riding indoors. I can now connect to Zwift and other monitoring apps simultaneously. Wireless connections are always fast and reliable.

I purchased a 3rd party wrist strap to augment the supplied arm band. This makes the Verity into the best HRM I have ever owned. It remains accurate with the wrist strap while being even more comfortable.

My only complaint: The USB adapter is mediocre. It's only USB-A and needs a cable to fit every charger configuration. No big deal. I bought a short USB extension cable.
