Product Description

Alan Alda and Barbara Harris star with Academy Award winner Meryl Streep in The Seduction of Joe Tynan, the critically acclaimed hit about senator (Alda) with presidential ambitions and the price he has to pay. Joe Tynan is a decent, hardworking senator whose job in Washington keeps him away from his wife (Harris) and family. Matters become even more complicated when he begins to develop a relationship with a civil rights activist (Streep) in this political drama where power and principles, like love and marriage, collide.

This is the best, most contemporary approximation of American politics since Allen Drury's "Advise and Consent." When Alan Alda wrote this story of a rising Senator (played by Alda) whose ambition gets complicated by his family dynamics mediated by his perceptive wife (Barbara Harris) he probably remembered Drury's work (a law standard) and attached the newer elements of liberated sexual ambitions adding to the challenges in modern politics. Until now, I thought "The Candidate," Jeremy Larner's opus stood alone among modern interpretations of american politics. "The Seduction of Joe Tynan" adds a newer level of realism to the political landscape. Having Mervyn Douglas and Rip Torn in the cast brings added depth to alda's creation. From reading former Senator Joe Clark's books about his tenure in politics, I believe this is the best look at the political scene in American politics today. The seduction in the title clearly refers to the seductive pull of ambition and power despite the obvious charms of Meryl Streep or the intellect of Sen. Tynan's wife, Barbara Harris. Until someone as perceptive and generous as Alan Alda re-interprets our democratic process, stripping it down to its thread-bare veneer of functioning honesty with less ambiguous resolution, this will do fine for those who can't watch Capra or Drury's black-and-white creations.

What The Candidate (Redford) did for the early 1970s, Joe Tynan does at the close of the decade. Politicians are merely people who get elected--saints AND sinners (e.g., Clinton); some more one way, some more the other.

I'll begin with a disclaimer: I'd watch anything Meryl Streep acts in and have, in fact, seen all of her movies. This is one of her earlier films, and she plays a young, beautiful, wealthy lawyer/activist whose older husband is too busy making more and more money to give her the affection she needs. Once she begins working with an idealistic, charismatic senator, played to perfection by Alan Alda, Joe Tynan's physical seduction begins, though their affair is only one aspect of Alda's character's abandonment of his family. Soon he's alienating his children, as well as his wife, thanks to the seduction of political power. The script was written by Alda, who also directed and stared in it. Alda and Streep are a dream team in this portrayal of the dark side of power.

'The Seduction of Joe Tynan' is a great political drama from a simpler time in American history, although I don't think we would have described 1970s post-Watergate America as 'simple' at the time.

This film was a labor of love for Alan Alda, who wrote the script and starred as the titular Senator Tynan. Barbara Harris plays his wife, Ellie, and a virtual unknown named Meryl Streep plays the senator's extramarital love interest. Really, the best thing about this film-- apart from Alda's writing ability-- is that all three of these principle actors had such great chemistry together. You don't often see depictions of love triangles in a movie where the audience likes and roots for all three personalities involved.

While Senator Tynan's affair roils his personal life, he also faces political opposition from Senator Birney, played by Melvyn Douglas, who coincidentally was married to Helen Gahagan-- the politician who ran for the U.S. Senate in 1950 against Richard Nixon and came up with Nixon's nickname, 'Tricky Dick.' Douglas, Rip Torn, and Michael Higgins all seem perfectly cast as power brokers and wheeler-dealers in the U.S. Senate.

Side note: I'd love to know where the Capitol scenes were filmed, because it doesn't seem to have been filmed at the actual U.S. Capitol Building. I don't recognize any of the landmarks depicted. My guess is that they shot the movie at a statehouse or luxury hotel, but I wasn't able to place the actual location used.

'The Seduction of Joe Tynan' is a warm movie, at times bittersweet and at other times happy and triumphant. The acting is superb-- there are no weak links anywhere in the cast. Senator Tynan's problems at home feel very real, while the movie's political subplots seem plausible enough for the era depicted.

This is a movie not just for Alan Alda and Maryl Streep admirers, but for anyone interested in American politics. Early work for both, it is nevertheless very nuanced. The themes seem to be timeless, both in politics and human relations. Thematically, like The Candidate, it's a wake-up call for everyone who may be "seduced" by power, fame and passion...and is this not everyone? As entertainment value, it's engaging, compelling, funny and disturbing, but ultimately hopeful. The mystery of why this hasn't been released in DVD is unexplainable....it's a great film, has timely relevance, and two major stars. What gives?

I'll be honest I didn't watch this film for the political aspect nor did I watch it for Meryl Streep or Alan Alda although I do like them. I watched for Barbara Harris because I adore her, such an extremely talented actress. It's a shame she didn't continue to work in film because she really was excellent. I must add the chemistry between Alda and Harris I found much more powerful than that between Streep and Alda. All in all an enjoyable movie.
