Not all battles are won by the sword.

Jurian’s victory against the dark power in Cyrene has earned him renown throughout the Empire, but fame means nothing to him if he can’t save the friend he lost.

When Jurian’s search for Menas leads him to Alexandria, he finds an unlikely ally in the Roman governor’s brilliant and precocious daughter, Aikaterina. Together they are swept into the glittering intrigue of Diocletian’s court in Nicomedia, where no one and nothing is what it seems.

Then Sabra arrives in the city, and Jurian proves to the Emperor that he is more than just a legend, and finally everything he ever hoped for seems within his reach. But Marcus Valerius Casca is also vying for Diocletian’s favor, and his hatred for Jurian knows no limits.

As Casca’s devious plotting snares each of Jurian’s friends in turn, Jurian must discover a way to beat his enemy at his own game and rescue Menas before he destroys them all.

From the exotic Alexandria to the imperial court of Nicomedia and the bloody sands of the Roman Colosseum, this sweeping second installment of the Sword and Serpent series will pull you into a riveting adventure through a world of deadly intrigue, where nothing is what it seems and the price of freedom can be greater than life itself.

Saints aren’t born. They are forged.

The Sword and serpent is the best trilogy I have read since the Lord of The Rings. Could not put it down.
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2023
My teenagers read this (as well as the other books in the trilogy) and highly recommended that I read them too. I loved Sword and Serpent, and this was just as exciting. I loved the development of the characters we had met in the first novel, as well as the new characters, and the twists of the plot made it hard to put down. I laughed, I cried, I got so angry at Casca's schemes. I can't wait to start the next book, and I've already purchased Nikolaus.

This book accomplishes to go beyond the "entertaining" in literature, it's an hagiographic legend in the full sense of the word.
The vivid characters, the living world; everything so real and believable, came out of the text directly into my heart and mind. "The Tenth Region of the Night" is a tale deeply Historical, and vibrantly contemporary. Addresses issues so important, but frequently misdirected in nowadays fiction, such as perseverance, hope, eagernes for truth, fame, failure, friendship and family, regret and forgiveness, madurity, mistakes, commitment, fear, patience, bravery, our own past and future, and our personal relationship with God and the world around us… everything from a realistic, well founded christian perspective. Ultimately, this literature work edificates your thought, and encourages you to be better: Saints are not born, they are forged!
And of course, it's all an adventure to be read!
Looking forward to Book III!

Taylor Marshall’s first novel,  Sword and Serpent , was a fine effort and well worth the read despite having certain shortcomings common to first novels [see my blog review at [Random Ramblings of an Absent-Minded Professor, January 2015]]. As is often the case, this sequel, The Tenth Region of the Night, improves substantially on the first, becoming one of the better books I have read this year, one I unhesitatingly recommend. The protagonist, Jurian, previously coming across rather flat, is now, in my opinion, developed into a fully fleshed-out individual who no longer pales beside the other main character, in that case a young priestess of the serpent himself (she reappears as well), in this latter case the daughter of the governor of Alexandria, named Aikaterina. Even the main villain of the piece gains depth and becomes something more than the stereotypical caricature he seemed in the opening volume. Overall the writing seems much smoother and more engaging than Sword and Serpent, gripping my interest right from the beginning as Jurian continues his quest subsequent to slaying the dragon – an accomplishment which instantly became a legend which dogs his footsteps from then on through this entire tale, for good and ill, as he strives to find and rescue a friend, lost to him in the first book, from death in the arena. Once again, Marshall has taken the history of the late Roman Empire under the Emperor Diocletian and a young Constantine, interwoven with the legends of Sts. George the Dragonslayer and Christopher the Christ-bearer, and others, and added to them the tale of St. Catherine of Alexandria, to create a gripping tale of the early Church in the Roman Empire on the eve of the Great Persecution. Knowing from early Christian history and tradition the trials and tragedies these characters face as that cataclysm looms ever closer, I nonetheless look forward eagerly to following their journeys through Marshall’s imagination to the triumph that ultimately awaits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Good! I love this Trilogy
Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2020
The Sword and Serpent trilogy is absolutely gripping! I couldn’t put the books down! If you are a fan of historical fiction this will be a hit. It is on par with books such as The Robe, by Lloyd C. Douglas, or Quo Vadis, by Henryk Sienkiewicz.

This trilogy follows the life and witness of St. George. Throughout the story you meet other saints from that era, such as St. Christopher, St. Nicholas, and St. Catherine of Alexandria, as well as political figures such as Diocletian, Galerius, and Constantine.

I hope that Dr. Taylor Marshall will continue the story of St. Catherine, St. Christopher, Constantine, and St. Helena in future books!

I really enjoyed reading Dr. Marshall's retelling of the lives of many great saints from the turn of the 3rd century, I had a hard putting the book down. the same goes also for the other two books of the series. I look forward to more historical fiction from Dr. Marshall. I've also enjoyed his other books, Thas Aquinas in 50 pages and Infiltration as well as his regular podcats.
God bless you, your family and your ministry, Dr. Marshall.
