The story of this poor lad Emmett Till visiting his cousins in the deep south on his own and like most teenagers not hearing entreaties to be very careful ended up brutally murdered.
His case, its brutality and Emmett's mum refusing to just bury her son where he was killed - the images were in Time Magazine shocking a nation - is said to have caused a sea change in the Civil Rights Movement in the US.
It is in my opinion a fitting companion piece to Isabel Wilkerson's book CASTE that researched the way in which entitlement and societal layering came about, was and in modified forms still is deployed to ensure the entitled remain so. It all helps the understanding of the lack of limits deployed in period and before on the brutalities of entitled overseers.
