“I was hooked on the very first page. Don't miss this one!" — Carley Fortune

Two writers with a complicated history end up working on the same TV show... Can they write themselves a new ending? A sexy and emotional enemies-to-lovers romance guaranteed to pull on your heartstrings and give you a book hangover from brilliant new voice Yulin Kuang

Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2024 by Entertainment Weekly · Today.com · Paste · Daily Waffle ·The Nerd Daily and more!

Helen Zhang hasn’t seen Grant Shepard once in the thirteen years sincethe tragic accident that bound their lives together forever.

Now a bestselling author, Helen pours everything into her career. She’s even scored a coveted spot in the writers’ room of the TV adaptation of her popular young adult novels, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome and overcome her writer’s block, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too. LA is the fresh start she needs. After all, no one knows her there. Except…

Grant has done everything in his power to move on from the past, including building a life across the country. And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away, he’s well liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows he shouldn’t have taken the job on Helen’s show, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can’t pass up.

Grant’s exactly as Helen remembers him—charming, funny, popular, and lovable in ways that she’s never been. And Helen’s exactly as Grant remembers too—brilliant, beautiful, closed off. But working together is messy, and electrifying, and Helen’s parents, who have never forgiven Grant, have no idea he’s in the picture at all.

When secrets come to light, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story. And yet… the key to making peace with their past—and themselves—might just lie in holding on to each other in the present.

"How to End a Love Story is one of the sexiest, smartest, funniest, and most effective novels I’ve read in a long time. Yulin Kuang’s voice is strong, sure, and singular—I’ll read anything she writes. An absolute star."
Emily Henry, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

"I was hooked on the very first page of How to End a Love Story, the absurdly delicious debut from Yulin Kuang. The chemistry between Helen and Grant is pure magic, as is Yulin's gorgeous writing. I need seven other books from her ASAP. Don't miss this one!" — Carley Fortune, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

"An utterly compelling debut complete with romance secret sauce—a couple with a real reason to stay apart...and simply can't. Emotional, relatable and binge-worthy."  — Tessa Bailey, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

“This captivating novel is a sexy and emotional read that deals with the aftereffects of trauma in a realistic and heartrending way. Readers looking for a contemporary romance with a passionate and grand love story, characters that leap off the page, and an original storyline will relish screenwriter and director Kuang’s debut novel.” — Library Journal (starred review)

"Screenwriter and director Kuang will break readers' hearts and then put them back together with her brilliantly written debut romance... an exceptional love story replete with all the witty banter and electric chemistry any romance reader could ever crave." — Booklist (starred review)

“[A] mature, compelling and relatable story of healing that resists simplifying its characters at every turn. … Kuang’s own experiences as a screenwriter shine through on every page. Her depictions of writer’s rooms and meetings with executives are lush, smart and visual, with each sentence packed full of insightful nuances and quiet moments of reflection. These are characters who have battled their demons and come out the other side, stronger than before. Were this a movie, it would be Oscar-worthy."  — BookPage (Starred Review)

“Screenwriter Kuang’s debut beautifully probes the lingering effects of grief and guilt while offering readers a glimpse behind the curtain of Hollywood glamour. … Kuang handles her characters’ complex emotions with sensitivity and skill, and makes the chemistry between Helen and Grant leap off the page. Readers will have no trouble rooting for these two.” — Publishers Weekly

“Alternating between Helen’s and Grant’s perspectives, How to End a Love Story is a poignant and charming enemies-to-lovers romance that gracefully explores grief, forgiveness, and growth.” — Bustle

“A bond that starts with a tragic death transforms into love … in her debut romance novel [Yulin Kuang] starts with high stakes.”  — Kirkus Reviews

"This is without doubt one of my favourite romance novels of the year. It's so smart, rich and emotional, so beautifully written - I can't rave about it enough. I truly adored it." — Beth O'Leary, Sunday Times Bestselling Author

"Yulin Kuang's How to End a Love Story is a smart, sexy, and powerful page-turner. The insider's look at Hollywood is just as fascinating as the complicated characters who work in the writers room. I couldn't put this book down--but also didn't want it to end!" — Jill Santopolo, New York Times Bestselling Author

“Two complicated people in an impossibly complicated situation, drawn to each other in spite of a deeply complicated past: How to End a Love Story is moving, compelling, and heart-flutteringly sexy. Yulin Kuang writes with a sure-footed confidence here, with impeccable knowledge of who her characters are...and how to get them to their hard-won happy ending.” — Kate Clayborn, author of Georgie, All Along

“Yulin Kuang has a wonderful voice, poignant and funny, she grabbed me from the first paragraph. I stayed up way too late reading this!” — Jill Shalvis, New York Times bestselling author

"How to End a Love Story is a sharp, sexy debut. Fans of Emily Henry and Colleen Hoover will love Yulin Kuang's wistful second chance romance."  — Elissa Sussman, bestselling author of Funny You Should Ask

"How to End a Love Story is everything you need in a romance novel: Complex characters, hilariously witty banter, and that spice level? Off the charts! If you need me, I'll just be over here dousing myself with cold water. And then reading it again." — Colleen Oakley, USA Today bestselling author of The Mostly True Story of Tanner and Louise

"Impossibly tender, funny, sexy, and heart-wrenching, How to End a Love Story is a gorgeously original romance -- and so much more -- that will leave you laughing, sobbing, and desperately wishing that it would never end. This is the kind of glorious gut-punch of a book that you'll want to share with all your friends, and reread over and over. I fell in helpless love with Helen and Grant's unforgettable story, and I wouldn't have it any other way." — Lana Harper, New York Times Bestselling Author

So many feels!
It’s hard putting into words how this book left me. I had so many feels: I laughed, awed, swooned, blushed, cried. I absolutely loved it. This had heartache, grief, forgiveness and healing. It is a love story of romance, a mother-daughter relationship, and a sister bond—it really made me think twice about the title and its significance afterwards. It was also eye opening to read in Helen’s perspective as the older second-generation daughter and seeing what it may have been like for my own older sister (I am the youngest of five in my fam). And Grant? I love him! My heart ached for him. All the characters were really great as well, imperfectly perfect, like they could be real people.Ngl it did look bleak for our two main characters at first. I wasn’t sure how they were going to end up together—𝙞𝙛 they’d end up together—but enter one of my favorite tropes: forced proximity. I don’t normally blush when reading romance (I got RBF when I read *those* scenes), but oooooh the things Grant says… 🤭🥵Please beware this book has TWs. Although there should be a warning that the book hangover for this doesn’t ever go away. Forever a favorite. 🤍🩷💜5 ⭐️ | 4 🌶️

Oh my easily achy, breaky, over active hopelessly romantic heart!!!

💖🥰💝

What a beautiful, twisting, chaotic story of love, family, loyalty, resilience, trauma, healing, forgiveness, and strength.

There is so much depth in this novel. So much dealt with under the surface, addressed with in a quiet understanding without beating it to a pulp.

The author is silently saying "I hope you know the depths of the culture and traditions of her (the protagonist's parents) and that is why so much is left unsaid and undone".

As an Asian, this knowledge and understanding gave so much more meaning and depth to the undercurrent of the entire book, and so much more strength to Helen, the protagonist.

I DEFINITELY recommend this love story to anyone and everyone who has a heart that beats within their chest, and has hope within their soul.

Helen Zhang was a different person in high school-- shy, nerdy, an older sister.

Now she's the author of a popular YA series that has been optioned for a tv show and she's been flown to LA to be a part of the writer's room to create the first season. And who is the number two writer in the room that she'll have to spend intense, long days with rehashing the emotional highs and lows of high school vis-a-vis her characters?

Grant Shepherd, former homecoming king, and a tragic part of her high school past and family.

Alot of the cool parts of this book are based in the author's life experience of screenwriting, etc. It all rings quite true down to the kinds of personalities of the other writers who become Helen's friends.

Grant and Helen are quite steamy, and while as a reader you're left wondering just a teensy bit how she gets past the huge, huge elephant in the room of his part in the tragic accident that irrevocably changed her family-- you are also intensely rooting for these two to get together. Grant is emotionally intelligent without being too beta-hero, without being too passive or needy.

Helen's major emotional arc has more to do with being a daughter to her loving but intense parents, who she must disappoint in order to have her HEA. This is an eminently readable story, chock full of cool LA writer room details, and a couple I can really root for.

The characters, script, dialogue are quite engaging, the writing quite good. But the premise of the story is flawed. It was an accident. If this were me, (or anyone else in my family), I would be apologizing to the driver for my sister throwing herself in front of the car. If this is intended to be an insight into Chinese culture, this unforgiving stance and unfair blame, then I guess I missed it, other than by inference. The flawed premise just cannot be gotten around.

I listened to the audiobook, then listened to it again right away and then re-read it. I loved this debut novel! Definitely worth the Book of the Month, Target Book Club and Reese's Book Club picks among the other accolades. This story gave me all the feels: sadness, relatable with the Chinese version of love, sexy, grief, anger, fun, wanting to belong, wanting to be healthy, and to be truly loved. The writing is so smart. Grant and Helen are acquaintances connected to each other by tragedy and in a twisted "the world is so small" moment, both end up reunited when he is on the screenwriting team of the film adaptation of her young adult book series. He grew up and continued to be friendly, outgoing, and likable, while she was more reserved, unsure of herself even with her success, and yet trying to push herself outside her comfort zone. They are both still working through what their life is now post-tragedy and it's so beautiful to watch them lean on each other for support but fall in love knowing that they would be the most unlikely too fall in for each other given their circumstances. The depiction of her Chinese parents was so spot on it almost made me cry.

This one is very good. Totally recommend.

Finally finished How To End A Love Story and it was well written, well paced and heart wrenchingly emotional (as one would expect from the screenwriter adapting Emily Henry books to the screen) lol. I enjoyed the emotional journey through Yulin Kuang commentary on growing up with emotionally stunted immigrant parents, who are so focused on image and success and not understanding their millennial children in addition to surviving devastating loss and grief.
I also loved the cast of side characters and the Hollywood production backdrop, especially the writers’ room scenes.

But the romance between Helen and Grant could have been handled better, I actually stopped reading for 2 books because Helen irritated me to no end. I respect her trauma but the third act breakup dragged for way too long.

I highly recommend the audiobook.

All the Reese Witherspoon book club books i’ve read so far have been good. This one was May 24 pick and something about it picked my interest. I am deff in a romance theme of reading at the moment. It was good, but not as good as I thought it would be. It had sad undertones and heart break and I think I wasn’t prepared for an emotional rollercoaster, I think I wanted happy and uplifting and easy to read.

This emotional rollercoaster of a book will be so hard to review, but I'm going to try. First of all, it is a debut so kudos to the author because the writing and story are absolutely superb The characters are lovable and even when you get mad at them, you feel their pain and empathize. The premise, or actually their past, is quite unusual but intrigued me right away! I adore Grant Shepherd. I don't know if I've seen a man more in love (yes a lot of romances deliver with pining men because they must otherwise what am I reading, but for some reason I could feel his love so deeply he was down SO BAD). I had some issues with the pacing of their intimacy but it got better and I accepted it and even when it felt at the beginning that it might take away from their deeper connection (which they had but I needed to not be pure attraction) it didn't and we got to see them truly fall in love and be the one for one another. This book deals a lot with grief and it had me sobbing a lot. What I liked most about it was sweetness and tenderness between the characters, the constant forehead kisses, hand kissing, there was so much softness and I love that in romance! Also ,going behind the scenes of making a tv show or more specifically an adaptation was so cool.

I've never felt so heard by an author before. The raw feelings portrayed by the author, the vulnerability the characters show, it's so refreshing! Also, Grant Shepherd is now my #1 fictional crush <3

Loved this book start to finish.

Such a warm cozy hug of a book to read. I haven’t read a book I didn’t want to put down in so long.
