NOW A SERIES ON APPLE TV+ THAT STEPHEN KING CALLS “MYSTERIOUS AND TERRIFICALLY SUSPENSEFUL.... EXCELLENT SCIENCE FICTION WITH THREE-DIMENSIONAL CHARACTERS."

*INCLUDES ORIGINAL ESSAY "A HISTORY OF THE DARKEST YARNS" FROM HUGH HOWEY*

“One of dystopian fiction’s masterpieces alongside the likes of 1984 and Brave New World." — Daily Express

The first book in the acclaimed, New York Times best-selling trilogy, Wool is the story of mankind clawing for survival. The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo.

But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

After the previous sheriff leaves the silo in a terrifying ritual, Juliette, a mechanic from the down deep, is suddenly and inexplicably promoted to the head of law enforcement. With newfound power and with little regard for the customs she is supposed to abide, Juliette uncovers hints of a sinister conspiracy. Tugging this thread may uncover the truth . . . or it could kill every last human alive.

“Claustrophobic and, at times, genuinely terrifying.” — Washington Post

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2012
Wow! What a great story. I found Howey's Wool Omnibus after I read and reviewed  Containment . Amazon's "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" is to blame! The price for the five Wool books (as an Omnibus series) was way too low for the quality of science fiction provided. In the same spirit and classic theme of dystopian stories like Orwell's 1984, and moving forward, modern and recent stories like The Hunger Games, Wool is the story of a world gone wrong. A world where people know little and continue their lives both in that ignorance and hope for the future. A world that is both expansive and confining, providing both mundane routine and mysterious details as the story progresses.

The writing style and descriptive language is very readable and focuses on character development backed with simultaneous individual stories which allow the reader to piece together what is going on. The story unfolds in a way where you learn a critical point (the first 10 pages reveal this style perfectly), then the reader can wonder how that came to be, and work towards the origin of that point. Things are revealed at just the right pace, leaving you wanting for more while turning the pages, and really leaving few stones unturned. This makes for that page turning-"gotta stay up late" quality that I love when immersed in a great story. The story does take about 100 pages to get to that point, and those first pages want and need to be read, but the initial pace quickly picks up leaving a sense of not being able to turn pages fast enough. This pacing may leave the reader surprised and satisfied at the same time.

At this point after getting to read all five Wool books in a week rather than months, I can only imagine having to wait for the release of the next book during the initial publication of each book in 2011 and into 2012--as each book leaves you wanting more and unwilling to wait. Even here at the end of book five of Wool, more is wanted. That leaves "First Shift-Legacy"
First Shift - Legacy (Part 6 of the Silo Series)  as book six of the Wool silo series, which is more of a prequel with a new set of characters (purchased and cued up!). The title plays on what a reader already has learned from the first five Wool stories.

Of course, waiting is not what you get with the Omnibus edition; you get all five of the books in one... and at a great price that is NOT reflective of what you reading. Each of these books is worth the $5+ price that would total $25+ for the entire series if purchased separately--and I bet in the initial publication and for the relative anonymity of Hugh Howey, pricing might have been a barrier, especially without a hard publication along with the electronic versions. The price was definitely something that made me interested in giving Wool a try--and now I am thinking I did not spend enough for the satisfaction gained. To make up for it, I am buying the rest of what this author has to offer on Amazon.

Wool is not a science and technology driven story, although the ecosystem is a technological and self contained marvel. Wool is a story of a dystopian future that provides a sense of dread and claustrophobia, while dangling the carrot of freedom at well paced intervals. Wool is the story of human beings with their weaknesses, strengths, and in a sense of classic story telling, of how one individual can infect others with ideas that are both dangerous and liberating. In short, classic sci-fi.

Hugh Howey has a wonderful story telling capacity and hopefully has lots more to write in a productive career, while exposing readers to provocative, mind expanding, and thoughtful ideas in an entertaining and lively style. Highly recommended. Buy everything!

Story: 5/5
1: Being Vague, rambling plot with no little believable storyline
5: Ripping yarn, clever, thought provoking

My title suggests that this could be an epic. The author has started a story here that began as a short story and has opened up into a vista of opportunity. Without a doubt, my biggest surprise read of 2012.

I was introduced to this book via a Goidreads friends review, where the author became part of the discussion. I liked what he had to say (in a nut shell, he talked about being a reader as well as a writer) and decided that I would buy the book and give it a try. I have to admit to not being a big Dystopian fan. I am kind of over the whole post apocalypse thing, there is very little that I find new and engaging in the stories and I don't think that Wool gives anything really new in the whole after disaster story, but what it does do, is tell a good story at a great pace.

The book is an omnibus of 5 books. I can see after reading book one why a lot of readers were asking for more. It was an interesting short read, had an interesting story line and begged for a story to be expanded on. Whilst the author builds the story with 4 more books I felt the entire read is one big novel, not 5 separate books. The stories flow on like chapters and I am sure a year from now, when this book is main stream and in its 4th print, that it will become one book.

One thing that I loved about this book was the pace in the second half. There are a couple of POV's going on and it often cut away on the moment of danger, excitement or pending disaster and I found myself reading faster and faster to get back to the other POV. During the second half of the book I couldn't put it down. I could during book three, which I found the slowest. but in book five I read like a maniac. There is a section in the book where on of the lead characters Juliette has to dive deep under water with a hose system (like the old diving days) and the story slowly builds to the inevitable, and the tension is stunningly written. Even knowing what was coming, i still felt ill reading about the predicament she was in.

There are parts that are a little rushed in the book and a couple of "oh that is convenient" moments, which I am sure will come out in all their glory with goodread reviewers, but you know what? This was a great story. I can totally see this adapted for tv and I would buy another installment of the story in an instant. The story itself could be huge, only limited by the time available to the author and how much he wants it to grow.

Characters: 4/5
1: Unrealistic/unbelievable. Feel nothing for these characters
5: Fully engaged with the characters, believable. Researched.

Characters in this books I would rate at about three and a half. There was some really good builds and I really felt like I got to know some of the characters well. Early characters in books one and two were excellent and I tink the Juliette role was pretty well done. I struggled with the Bernard character somewhat and didn't like the Lukas personality at all. I thought the way Bernard was being told in the second half of the book that there was devious nefarious plan in the background, but there wasn't and I kind of felt let down, that the story conveniently changed the personality to suit a quick resolution to a dilemma.

Read Weight: Solid
Fluffy, Light, Solid, Heavy, Struggle

Engagement: 4/5
1: Not fussed about finishing
5: Could stay up all night

The last third of the book had to be read in one sitting. I could not imagine putting it down and coming back to it.

Recommend: 5/5
1: Would advise you to read something else
5: Go read it now. It is THAT good

Considering this was a self published book it was brilliantly written. I have read some many professionally published books that lacked the writing skill here. I would have no qualms recommending this book, I think it has something for all.

This is a great story well written and gripping. It's as much a thriller and adventure story as a SciFi novel and can be read as a stand alone or as a great start to the trilogy. The characters are believable and solid and the setting made about as real as you can make it. Definitely worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Reviewed in Canada on October 18, 2019
Have loved sci-if for more years than I care to admit, but find much of the current writing doesn't grab me like the classic authors: Heinlein, Asimov and Clark to name just a few. This is a welcome exception. Once started, I found it very hard to put this story aside for the usual things life demands. Well-written. Well-developed characters. Well-described story infrastructure for the most part: a few niggles about radio comms and IT power due to my technical background but not enough to distract me from the story. Constantly found myself rooting for the good guys and hoping they would win out, but never felt sure they would. Juliette (or Jules as she liked to be called) is a heroine who won't quit no matter what, and that level of stubbornness and resourcefulness is something we should all strive for, not to mention her inherent goodness, something we should likewise all aspire to. The artwork and animations were very much welcome and fit the story very well. Originally tried reading this book on Kindle for OS X but that version is getting very stale and limited, resulting in no artwork, etc., plus random jumps in font size. Switched to Kindle on my aging iPad and all the issues disappeared. Highly recommended. Looking forward to the next volume.
