Purchase options and add-ons
New York Times bestselling author Elle Kennedy brings her signature angst, drama, and humor to a new standalone romance. My Oxford Year meets We Met In December, Girl Abroad finds the daughter of a retired rock star studying abroad in London and entangled in scandal and romance.
When nineteen-year-old Abbey Bly gets the opportunity to study abroad for a year in London, it's the perfect chance to finally slip out from under the thumb of her beloved but overbearing retired rock star father. She's ready to be free, to discover herself―but first off, to meet the girls she's rooming with. That is, until she arrives at her gorgeous new flat to discover those roommates are actually all boys. Charming, funny, insufferably attractive boys. And off-limits, with a rule against fraternizing between housemates after unwanted drama with the previous girl.
Abbey has never considered herself a rulebreaker. But soon, she's lying to her father about her living situation and falling for not one, but two men she can't have: her rugby-player roommate and a broody musician with a girlfriend. Not to mention, her research for school has gotten her tangled in a deeply hidden scandal of a high nobility family, surrounding her in secrets on all sides.
If there's any hope of Abbey finding love, answers, or a future in London, she'll have to decide which rules―and hearts―might be worth breaking.

I was quite fond of our FMC Abbey. I connected with her on a deep level. Abbey was very wonderful! Her charming traits of strength, curiosities, and intelligence made her stand out and made her an adorably likable character.
The side characters and supporting characters were all amazing and a lot of fun; their individual histories and personalities enhanced the story. They never failed to lighten the mood and provided wonderful entertainment.
Both MMCs had their own charms in this swoon-worthy relationship. But from the beginning, my heart was set on one of them (🏉🤫). The suspense of waiting until the end to find out who Abbey ends up with added a nerve-racking yet exhilarating twist to the plot. I screamed when I found out.
Additionally, the mystery element added a lot to the narrative and kept me interested the entire time. I thought Abbey's exchanges with Mr. Baxley, her librarian friend, while conducting her study were the cutest thing ever. Their moments were what I lived for!
Now I did read this in one day. I just wasn’t in love with it. Personally, I just don’t love the love triangle in any book but with this one I really found it hard to connect with either love interest. They were both so great and it seemed like she liked them both the same amount up until the very end. Because of this I didn’t really feel any connection to either of them because it felt like if she wasn’t sure about either of them why should I be.
I did enjoy the mystery aspect of the novel though. That’s what really saved this book for me and kept me invested in finding out who Josephine ended up with. I really loved how she wrapped up her story and felt like she honestly gave us a far more complete and satisfying story with Josephine than she did with Abbey. I felt like Josephine’s story was really rounded out and completed but Abbey’s ending felt rushed to be honest and thus not very satisfying. Maybe we could have used a few more chapters after she had made her decision.
Elle Kennedy deviated from her standard hockey romance (and I love those), and wrote a fun, quirky coming-of-age romance with Girl Abroad. Love triangles aren’t typically her style, but she truly made this one work!! Right up until the ending, I didn’t know who Abbey was going to pick (though I def agree with her decision 🤭) and it made for a compelling new book!

Lots of 5 stars out there from folks who give only 4 and 5 stars to everything, you know?
I don't do that. And not because of the author (every author deserves 5 stars no matter what - because it's bloody hard). But for the reader, you know?
I read The Deal and didn't really like it. Thought it was a bit meh. Then I read Briar U and it was a bit better but still not wild about it, you know? Good. But in a sea of books and authors, it's hard to grab ones attention sometimes.
But in this book?! Everything is superb!
We are talking about a young FMC who is finally free of her overbearing and famous dad and starts living her life on the other side of the Atlantic (bu-bye Merica, hello London). She instantly finds her people, who for the first time don't care her dad is famous, and a new family is born.
The young character is not whiney or bitchy, nor is she ditzy. She makes a few mistakes here and there but nothing major and all good lessons for her to grow and she did grow/learn her lessons. So that alone is worthy of one star.
The the author goes on to describe what's quite common nowadays (which was not part of my lived experience back when I was single) and she showed me how someone can get involved with two people without being sleazy. I was shocked! Shocked I understood and didn't judge the character even though I'm highly against this IRL. So yeah, there's a love triangle (which is not my favourite trope - i actually find it quite annoying because it's always so freaking cliche and, well, annoying really!). But this particular triangle is done really well! And now I get to my favourite thing about the book... The author added a mystery that needs solving. It's for academic purpose, yadda, yadda. I won't go into the details because I wouldn't do it justice or would end up spoiling it without meaning to.
But basically Elle grabbed me by the proverbial balls and didn't let go.
Between the found family, finding oneself, love triangle(s) and the academic mystery that needs solving, I couldn't go to sleep without finishing the story. And as a mom to an energetic little girl who is on half term, sleep is precious. But I gave it away. Elle and the book deserved it. And I'm so freaking happy I read this book.
Do yourself a favour and read it!
(and if the author is reading this, sorry my review started off as a back handed compliment - I still felt it was necessary for reviewers to know I'm not just a fan girl, fan girling, you know? Because this book right here DESERVES A LOT OF LOVE).
Ps: as there's a love triangle, one must choose right? I won't tell you which one. Just that at first I was disappointed with the choice (as tends to happen with readers of love triangles - because we all have very strong opinions)... I thought it should have been the other one. But then when the FMC shares her way of thinking, I totally understood her. It made total sense that in trying to find who she is, she got confused trying to find the answer. But once she knew who she was, the answer was clear. So even that was well done - in regards to solving the love triangle.
