Purchase options and add-ons

New York Times bestselling author Elle Kennedy brings her signature angst, drama, and humor to a new standalone romance. My Oxford Year meets We Met In December, Girl Abroad finds the daughter of a retired rock star studying abroad in London and entangled in scandal and romance.

When nineteen-year-old Abbey Bly gets the opportunity to study abroad for a year in London, it's the perfect chance to finally slip out from under the thumb of her beloved but overbearing retired rock star father. She's ready to be free, to discover herself―but first off, to meet the girls she's rooming with. That is, until she arrives at her gorgeous new flat to discover those roommates are actually all boys. Charming, funny, insufferably attractive boys. And off-limits, with a rule against fraternizing between housemates after unwanted drama with the previous girl.

Abbey has never considered herself a rulebreaker. But soon, she's lying to her father about her living situation and falling for not one, but two men she can't have: her rugby-player roommate and a broody musician with a girlfriend. Not to mention, her research for school has gotten her tangled in a deeply hidden scandal of a high nobility family, surrounding her in secrets on all sides.

If there's any hope of Abbey finding love, answers, or a future in London, she'll have to decide which rules―and hearts―might be worth breaking.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Elle Kennedy has written an enjoyable coming-of-age story filled with humor, drama, romance, and a found family. Readers will enjoy the way Kennedy deviates from her usual steamy-angst-centric stories for one with deeper emphasis on self growth, relationship dynamics and figuring out not only who you are, but what you want." ― NPR

Damaged Copy
I was excited to get this book. When I opened my package, I saw that I actually received a damaged and stained copy. That might explain the price reduction, but it would’ve been nice if a note had been added so I would know ahead of time that my copy wasn’t actually brand new (like I assumed). I’ll be returning this copy (since I received it today) and buying elsewhere :(

This book had me hooked from the first line "He follows me everywhere" and the story got more amazing with every page! We soon learn that "He" is her father, a retired Rock God who went from being photographed carrying her in one had and a bottle of liquor in the other to retiring so that he could keep her safe and made that his JOB. Now she (his daughter, Abbey - named after Abbey Road), is leaving for a school year abroad in London and dad is having a hard time. She does make it to England and her adventure begins! This book has everything, a mystery, lots of comedy, plenty of drama (mostly heart related), music, and cute London lads (you'll see). Girl abroad was a joy to read and I will continue to laugh remembering the funny parts and sigh thinking of the heart-felt parts. I'll likely re-read it so that I can enjoy the amazing writing that produced lines that made me remember being young and feeling all the new feels: "Like a scratchy sore throat warning of a coming cold, I feel the fizz of a budding crush bubbling in my gut".

This book is for you if you're looking for something with forced proximity, sexy banter, a love triangle, and a London scenery.

I was quite fond of our FMC Abbey. I connected with her on a deep level. Abbey was very wonderful! Her charming traits of strength, curiosities, and intelligence made her stand out and made her an adorably likable character.

The side characters and supporting characters were all amazing and a lot of fun; their individual histories and personalities enhanced the story. They never failed to lighten the mood and provided wonderful entertainment.

Both MMCs had their own charms in this swoon-worthy relationship. But from the beginning, my heart was set on one of them (🏉🤫). The suspense of waiting until the end to find out who Abbey ends up with added a nerve-racking yet exhilarating twist to the plot. I screamed when I found out.

Additionally, the mystery element added a lot to the narrative and kept me interested the entire time. I thought Abbey's exchanges with Mr. Baxley, her librarian friend, while conducting her study were the cutest thing ever. Their moments were what I lived for!

I want to preface this by saying that I love Elle Kennedy’s writing and have read pretty much every book she’s put out. I have been obsessed with the Graham Effect since it was released and have also reread The Deal several times as well. So to say I was super excited for this book to come out is an understatement. I had pre-ordered it in every available format.

Now I did read this in one day. I just wasn’t in love with it. Personally, I just don’t love the love triangle in any book but with this one I really found it hard to connect with either love interest. They were both so great and it seemed like she liked them both the same amount up until the very end. Because of this I didn’t really feel any connection to either of them because it felt like if she wasn’t sure about either of them why should I be.

I did enjoy the mystery aspect of the novel though. That’s what really saved this book for me and kept me invested in finding out who Josephine ended up with. I really loved how she wrapped up her story and felt like she honestly gave us a far more complete and satisfying story with Josephine than she did with Abbey. I felt like Josephine’s story was really rounded out and completed but Abbey’s ending felt rushed to be honest and thus not very satisfying. Maybe we could have used a few more chapters after she had made her decision.

I absolutely adored this book and just wanted it to keep going! Abbey had the dream I wish I would have perused at her age being able to study and live abroad in London—and her love of libraries! I thought it was a hilarious and great (another oh if only) premise that she thought she was rooming with three girls only to find it was three men! I loved her character and also the characters of Lee and Celeste—the hilarious drama queen twins, Jamie—the playboy posh but sweet party boy, and Jack(ie)—good lord the hot cinnamon roll center protective Australian rugby giant! Bring in Noah the brooding bad boy musician and her overprotective rock star father, plus the hilarious interactions she had with the library guardian Mr. Baxley (those clipboard responses made me laugh out loud!), it was a well rounded and enjoyable cast. I loved the side narrative of the mystery of Josephine and the Tulleys which led to a foray into the royal life, albeit with its ups and downs. But I also thoroughly enjoyed the love triangle and was just as caught up with the love interests as Abbey was, though I adore the decision she made at the end. It was a great story of trusting yourself and others, even if they make mistakes in the name of love, but also of making sure you are living life your way and going for what feels right and makes you happy. So very good!! Definitely recommend!

*sigh* Elle Kennedy just does not disappoint, and I am OK with that 🥹

Elle Kennedy deviated from her standard hockey romance (and I love those), and wrote a fun, quirky coming-of-age romance with Girl Abroad. Love triangles aren’t typically her style, but she truly made this one work!! Right up until the ending, I didn’t know who Abbey was going to pick (though I def agree with her decision 🤭) and it made for a compelling new book!

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad I came back to Elle Kennedy's world
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 22, 2024
Just so you know where I'm coming from and how genuine my 5 stars + favourite shelf it actually is.
Lots of 5 stars out there from folks who give only 4 and 5 stars to everything, you know?
I don't do that. And not because of the author (every author deserves 5 stars no matter what - because it's bloody hard). But for the reader, you know?
I read The Deal and didn't really like it. Thought it was a bit meh. Then I read Briar U and it was a bit better but still not wild about it, you know? Good. But in a sea of books and authors, it's hard to grab ones attention sometimes.
But in this book?! Everything is superb!
We are talking about a young FMC who is finally free of her overbearing and famous dad and starts living her life on the other side of the Atlantic (bu-bye Merica, hello London). She instantly finds her people, who for the first time don't care her dad is famous, and a new family is born.
The young character is not whiney or bitchy, nor is she ditzy. She makes a few mistakes here and there but nothing major and all good lessons for her to grow and she did grow/learn her lessons. So that alone is worthy of one star.
The the author goes on to describe what's quite common nowadays (which was not part of my lived experience back when I was single) and she showed me how someone can get involved with two people without being sleazy. I was shocked! Shocked I understood and didn't judge the character even though I'm highly against this IRL. So yeah, there's a love triangle (which is not my favourite trope - i actually find it quite annoying because it's always so freaking cliche and, well, annoying really!). But this particular triangle is done really well! And now I get to my favourite thing about the book... The author added a mystery that needs solving. It's for academic purpose, yadda, yadda. I won't go into the details because I wouldn't do it justice or would end up spoiling it without meaning to.
But basically Elle grabbed me by the proverbial balls and didn't let go.
Between the found family, finding oneself, love triangle(s) and the academic mystery that needs solving, I couldn't go to sleep without finishing the story. And as a mom to an energetic little girl who is on half term, sleep is precious. But I gave it away. Elle and the book deserved it. And I'm so freaking happy I read this book.
Do yourself a favour and read it!
(and if the author is reading this, sorry my review started off as a back handed compliment - I still felt it was necessary for reviewers to know I'm not just a fan girl, fan girling, you know? Because this book right here DESERVES A LOT OF LOVE).
Ps: as there's a love triangle, one must choose right? I won't tell you which one. Just that at first I was disappointed with the choice (as tends to happen with readers of love triangles - because we all have very strong opinions)... I thought it should have been the other one. But then when the FMC shares her way of thinking, I totally understood her. It made total sense that in trying to find who she is, she got confused trying to find the answer. But once she knew who she was, the answer was clear. So even that was well done - in regards to solving the love triangle.

5.0 out of 5 stars New adult love triangle romance
Reviewed in Australia on April 20, 2024
Girl Abroad is a new standalone new adult romance by best selling author, Elle Kennedy. I love Elle Kennedy but this is the first standalone book I've read of hers. I was really looking forward to this one and while not her best, she still delivers up a fun, easy to read romance. I enjoyed the love triangle aspects (although it was clear from the get go who she was going to end up with) and the banter and flirt was well done. I definitely liked one guy more than the other. I'm not sure if its just because I'm getting older and 19-years-old seems young but I found that I didn't connect with these characters as much as in some of her other books. I'd highly recommend checking out her Off-Campus series and the new connected series Campus Diaries if you're in your hockey romance era as those series are fantastic and extremely well written.
