Here After is a poetic, raw depiction of an unlikely love followed by a dizzying loss. A stunning, taut memoir from debut Canadian author Amy Lin that will resonate deeply with anyone who has been in grief’s grasp.

“When he dies, I fall out of time.”

Amy Lin never expected to find a love like the one she shares with her husband, Kurtis, a gifted young architect who pulls her toward joy, adventure, and greater self-acceptance. On a sweltering August morning, only a few months shy of the newlyweds’ move to Vancouver, thirty-two-year-old Kurtis heads out to run a half-marathon with Amy’s family. It’s the last time she sees her husband alive.

What follows is a rich and unflinchingly honest portrayal of her life with Kurtis, the vortex created by his death, and the ongoing struggle Amy faces as she attempts to understand her own experience in the context of commonly held “truths” about what the grieving process looks like.

Here After is an intimate story of deep love followed by dizzying loss; a memoir so finely etched that its power will remain with you long after the final page.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This book is a little wonder―a clear, utterly courageous act of love.”
ELLE

“If you’ve ever known loss so cataclysmic that you want not stories of hope or survival, but ones that cry out in their brokenness―if you are looking for a place to meet your own pain or perhaps feel less alone with it―Here After might be the companion you need.”
Esquire

“As the author navigates the wake of her inexplicable loss, readers will be both humbled by and grateful for the way she brings us into her world. A beautifully visceral and emotionally intimate depiction of young widowhood.”
Kirkus Reviews(starred review)

“Lin’s memoir dazzles. Each chapter breathes with urgency…The tension between immediacy and memory lends the book an etherealness despite its raw, human vulnerability…written in poetic, fragmented chapters that convey how deeply people want to find words for what’s wordless, to discover meaning in the meaningless.”
Library Journal (starred review)

“Told in short, poetic vignettes that stun in their depth, love, and pain. It's heartbreaking, beautiful, and above all, honest with . . . a small light of hope. Highly recommended.”
Booklist (starred review)

"Lin's performance of her memoir, told in vignettes of meeting and losing Kurtis, is so staggeringly beautiful that it will break your heart . . . Lin teaches us, or reminds us, that sitting with someone in their sadness is far more helpful than a futile attempt to distract someone from their grief."
Audiofile

"Amy Lin’s book is one of the best memoirs and books about grief that I’ve read."
―Susan Blumberg-Kason, Cha Journal

“It has been years since I have been so rocked, so moved, by any book, as I have been by Here After by the earthquaking new talent Amy Lin. Lin invites us into this place of exquisite pain and beauty; what a great gift she has given us.”
–Lauren Groff, author of Fates and Furies

"Amy Lin’s debut memoir is a testament to everything beautiful and heartbreaking and necessary in this world. With sheer precision and unflinching candor, she shares the depths of love and loss, hope and healing. Not since Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking has a book cracked open my heart the way Here After has."
―Debbie Millman, author of Why Design Matters and host of Design Matters

"Here After is stunning–in the sense of leaving me stunned. I've never read a book that so directly translated grief into language. It is beautiful, crushing, and amazing, and I read it in a single breathless sitting.”
―Catherine Newman, author of We All Want Impossible Things

“How gorgeously Here After tackles the twin specters of grief and survival; a steely, symphonic memoir of unexpected loss―and what (necessarily, unbearably) comes next.”
―Carmen Machado, author of In the Dream House

Here After is a searing account of a young couple’s lost future and a writer’s descent into the soul-ravaging, shape-shifting wilderness of grief. Amy Lin writes with devastating clarity about the wounds that do not heal, the stories that remain forever fractured, and love’s enduring force. This is a profound and essential memoir.”
–Laura van den Berg, author of The Third Hotel

"Here After is perfectly titled. Amy Lin's memoir of love and loss is heartbreaking and true. Having navigated my own path through grief, there was much I could identify with within these pages. Lin's writing is vivid, episodic, and unflinching―much like grief itself."
–Shannon Leone Fowler, author of Traveling With Ghosts

“Amy Lin knows her way around grief and its constant present tense. Grief is always with us; here are words to go with it, a writer who will accompany you on its long walk. This book made room for my tears and it will make room for yours if you let it.”
―Matthew Salesses, author of Craft in the Real World

So poignant, it steals your breath
I choose to read about grief often because I have difficulty finding the right words to express the emotions. Reading how others share puts me more in touch with processing where I am myself. It also allows me to feel seen and accepted, and on top of that, I think it makes me more empathetic and open to others who are grieving.I regularly recommend Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Notes on Grief, and Here After will be added to that very short list. I will be gifting it to friends and family and sharing it as often as I can because it’s just that special. I also have to mention its appearance. It’s smaller in size, which I love, and the cover is buttery soft, like you just want to hold and hug it. While Here After is a story of devastating loss, it’s also one of epic love. Here After is deep and raw; stealing your breath. That’s how grief is, right?I received a gifted copy.

If you have ever found love and acceptance beyond your wildest expectations, and then tried to stagger onward without it, this book might be for you.

Loss leaves us blind afterwards to the basic familiarity of existence. There is a surrealness that makes explanations feel like a Dali painting. Despite thousands of years of human progress, grief remains an experience so misty that we have yet to build proper lighthouses for travelers there.

Which is what makes this book so luminous: from deep within its hazy recesses, Amy Lin has illuminated the landscape of loss.

This book casts a flashlight over the invisible sculpture of grief, outlines its bends and curves, its sharp points, so that others can say, ah, THERE, I see it now.

I read this book in one sitting. Afterwards I felt bandaged in places I hadn't known still bled.

If you are a widow feeling unseen, or a support person struggling to comprehend the experience, this book might be for you.

This book is about seeing things we all hope no one ever has to glimpse. Admitting they exist. Continuing anyway.

It is heartbreaking and beautiful and true.

Amy Lin has given us a raw and up close look at the unending grief and pain she felt after the unexpected and unexplained death of her husband one day in the early part of the pandemic, when they were both in their thirties. I applaud Lin's honesty and am in awe of her poetic ability to bring us along with her and Kurtis during their relationship and in the aftermath of his death. For bystanders to grief, Lin reminds us that grief is not linear nor does it adhere - at all - the mythical "five stages." Rather it is ugly, ceaseless and irrational. Thank you to Zibby Books and NetGalley for the ARC.

How beautiful this book and this love. I could have read it in one sitting because it had me captivated but I wanted to absorb small bites at a time. The format allowed me to do just that. Amy’s story is both gut wrenching and powerful in her presentation of death, grief and living.

This book was just ok. I just hated the format. The way she shared her love story with her husband and at the same time wove her feelings of grief were a story well told. Just really couldn't get into the format. Quick read.

This memoir is both beautiful and heartbreaking.

The prose is sparse- every word carefully chosen. The author gives us poignant vignettes of life through the years meeting her husband, dating, falling in love, his death , and learning how to live again in the after.

It is a brutally honest and intimate piece of storytelling.

Interweaving the past and the present, Amy Lin invites us into her grief after her husband suddenly dies. This book portrays heartbreak, love, and the many ways grief shatters us. In beautiful lyrical prose, Amy Lin not only tells us her story, but also helps us understand those who grieve and how to bear witness to their loss. A powerful volume that will stay with me. I will keep extra copies to gift to those who grieve.
