Product Description

"Forensic sleuthing in the age of invention

"Smart, fast-paced fun" —The Globe and Mail (Canada)

Sly wit, surprising twists, and the fascinating roots of modern criminology

Cutting-edge Victorian science meets cunningly plotted mystery in this "stylish period thriller" (The Globe and Mail, Canada). In the 1890s, Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson, Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye) adopts modern techniques like "finger marks" and forensics to track Toronto’s most sinister killers. Though derided by his skeptical boss (Thomas Craig, Where the Heart Is), Murdoch finds friends and allies in a lovely pathologist (Gemini-winner Hélène Joy, Durham County) and an eager-to-learn constable (Jonny Harris, Hatching, Matching & Dispatching). Along the way they cross paths with some of the era’s most famous figures, including Nikola Tesla, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Prince Alfred. "

Historically Fun!

Historically Fun!
I find this series to be informative, fun, exciting and intelligent. Information given is factual, historical and fiction at its best. The fun comes in situations presented in each story. Exciting in how the situations are handled physically or mentally. Intelligent in how the situation is solved and the person's perception on how to respond. Oh yes, and the addition of romance is a nice inclusion!

These are entertaining mysteries, with a scientific approach to crime solving and an interesting look at inventions as they may have been produced in the Victorian Era. Actually not much of a stretch because the first computer was designed in the 1800’s. Episodes often include historical figures & events from the period. Detective Murdoch devises the gadgets, his boss Inspector Brackenreid has limited patience for them and Constable Crabtree usually comes up with a comic approach to the problem. Add in a rather formal romance between Murdoch and Coroner Julia Ogden. Series occasionally probes modern problems within the historical setting. These earlier episodes are worth watching, tho not quite as slickly produced as the later ones. They tend to be choppy. Plots tend to be less outlandish than some from the late seasons. The first episode of season one doesn’t introduce the characters very well. It makes one think an episode is missing. Shows are on multiple discs with 3 or 4 episodes to a disc. The discs are only labeled with season & episode numbers. The case lacks a list of titles. About the only things the series has in common with Maureen Jennings’ books are the names of the characters. Everything is done more politely and the filth and poverty of the period is cleaned up.

Interesting, good characters, interesting stories, interesting comparison of items used now and then.

After finding the first episode slow moving and not very interesting, I watched 3 more to see if I just picked a bad episode and so I didn't make a judgment about the series based on just one episode.

I'm puzzled about the rave reviews. Yannick Bisson is a pretty face but it's hard to know whether the writing is as flat as it seems or Bisson just isn't a good actor. The anachronisms are irritating, and the stories are uninteresting and without the elements which make a CSI/police type drama appealing. Worse, Det. Murdoch too often looks confused, like he doesn't understand what's going on. His empty look & frequent loss for words are embarrassing.

The story is supposed to hold your interest, but I found myself glancing at the clock to see how much time was left. The dialogue is silly and amateurish. Even considering the era in which the drama takes place, the characters, the plot, and the dialogue & relationship between characters feels unreal, not credible.

As an aside, if you are offended by the idea of 2013 standards of morality & political correctness in a show which takes place in 1895, you'll want to pass on this show. I may get clobbered for that cautionary note, but it's my opinion. The P.C. drop-ins are contrived and are not things which characters in that era would have said or done.

Murdoch Mysteries may be considered a success based on being around for 7+ years, but I'm not impressed. Perhaps I'm just not part of the target audience, and we do have different tastes. But the absence of dramatic substance and good writing & character development makes Murdoch Mysteries not worth my time.

5.0 out of 5 stars bella sorpresa!
Reviewed in Italy on April 24, 2014

5.0 out of 5 stars Murdoch Mysteries a winner!
Reviewed in Canada on January 4, 2012
Murdoch Mysteries is an excellent murder mystery series. The cast is exceptionally well suited for their role and Constable Crabtree adds so much humour. The series is very fast paced and there is strong character development, not cardboard by any means. Filmed largely in Cambridge Ontario, and set in the late 1890's, Murdoch employs the latest detective techniques to solve murders. We also see the tensions of race, religion and class in Toronto of the day. And the ever lasting question: will William (Murdoch) and Julia (Dr. Ogden) get together? Each episode is an hour but story lines run through the series. Also, visit the Murdoch website and read Crabtree's novel. Hilarious [...] Murdoch is played by Yannick Bisson, Dr. Julia Ogden by Helene Joy, Constable Crabtree by Jonny Harris, Inspector Brackenreid by Thomas Craig.
