The war is on. The Devil plots to defeat you. Meet some battle-tested warriors who fight at your side.

Satan is real. He’s a formidable foe who wants to snatch us away from God, and the thought of doing battle with him can seem daunting.

Even so, the saints who have gone before us have engaged the Devil, armed with the power of Christ … and emerged victorious! These fellow warriors in heaven now fight on our behalf.

In Saints Who Battled Satan, Paul Thigpen, author of Manual for Spiritual Warfare, details the heroic combat of 17 saints who defeated the Enemy.

In Saints Who Battled Satan, discover:

How Satan attacks us through extraordinary assaults and everyday temptations.
How these 17 saints used prayer, Scripture, the sacraments, and other spiritual weapons against the Enemy.
How the virtues served these saints as combat armor.
How these victorious saints now offer their aid to those of us still battling on earth.
Read the inspiring and triumphant stories of Padre Pio, Francis of Assisi, Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, John Vianney, and a dozen other saints who battled Satan. You’ll find the strength, the courage, and the faith to win your own war against the Enemy.

I found this book very interesting. I had hoped for more detail about the interactions between the demons and the saints. Many of summaries were quite good, but some seemed to be not much more than a blurb you would find on the flyleaf of a book. I do think it is worth purchasing, but I would get the Kindle or print version. I would not get the audible version. The narrator does read well, but his interpretation of what a demon would sound like is laughable. It is really quite a shame. For people who believe in the existence of demons, which I imagine would be the majority of purchasers, this is a serious subject. We really are interested in the tactics used by the saints to fight off demonic attacks, and so are not only interested in the lives of the saints, and their pursuit of ho!iness, but also gleaning some helpful advice on ways to combat the devil ourselves. Unfortunately, this reader treats the narration of the demon' s responses and dia!ogue as if he is imitating a wicked character in a children's fairytale. When he is narrating a conversation between a demon and the Curé of Ars for instance, he makes the demon sound like Rumpelstiltskin or a cartoon character. He does this in every chapter, and I found it very insulting. I'm not sure why he made the decision to handle it this way. Either he wants to make sure the audience knows that he doesn't take any of this seriously, and so he turns the demonic speaking parts into a comedy routine, or he wants to make sure none of us take this at all seriously, so he is injecting some humor and levity with his farcical tone of voice and ridiculous accents and sounds. He makes the demons sound ludicrous, and turns all of the demonic encounters into a comedy routine. This is the way I would envision it being read during a late night television comedy skit. If you are a religious person, and have any respect for the saints, stick to the kindle or print version. The narrated version will leave you feeling indignant on behalf of the saints, as if they were a fairytale character like Goldilocks in fear of the three bears, instead of men and women who suffered through difficult lives involving poverty, ill health, censure by the authorities or their fami!ies, as well as ongoing diabolical torment. They deserve a little more respect than they were given here.

A wonderful historical account including episodes in the life's of Saint Paul, Saint Peter, Saint Benedict and many others who were sorely tempted or continually attacked by the Evil Enemy and how they overcame thru Faith in God, Jesus & The Holy Spirit.
I really do not have the vocabulary to describe this volume as it should be described. It was extremely inspirational to me & educational. For the first time I think I was able to clearly see a timeline of the dates different people lived and what was occurring in Roman history AD, after the death of Jesus. I am going to send a copy of this book to All family members as we are all trying to build Catholic Libraries in our homes with which to avail to grandchildren and future generations of family.

This is a fantastic book! After reading it I recommended it to my family. My sister read it and bought like 40 of them for everyone who she works with and all of the Religious Ed teachers at her church! Everyone who has read it has loved it. I highly recommend this book. It helped me see how sneaky Satan is and how he leads me into different sins. This book clearly tells Satan's strategies through the lives of the saints so now I am much better prepared for the spiritual warfare that is always at hand.

I was very intrigued by the autobiographic recollections from the Saints of past centuries to the present in dealing with the devil’s temptations and tricks to make them enter into knowing sin. This book is a primer, learning from the Saints, on the techniques they employed to grow or maintain in holiness.

Wow! Very interesting accounts of 17 saints who encountered Satan and how they overcame him! Helps the everyday Christian learn how to use prayer, scripture and other spiritual tools to fight the good fight! Shows what virtues the saints used to combat temptation! Gives examples through their lives of how the evil one attacks us with these common temptations. Lots of great quotes from the early church fathers and the saints themselves! Great read! Satan is formidable but he can be vanquished.....learn how!

I was hesitant at first by seeing its cover although I purchased it anyway and glad that I did it was about our Saints and how they were tormented by you know WHO and yet they stood toe to toe and demonstrated such great strength doing God and Jesus's will. I try to remember this when I am being challenged and or feeling weak. Its a good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading about battling the forces of darkness
Reviewed in Canada on July 23, 2020
Satan has done a great job of convincing most of us that he does not exist. Therefore there is no need to believe in God either. The result is a huge number of people in the world who do not realize that the forces of darkness are in a constant campaign to steal their souls. Even science is finding that there must be something other than the brain to explain consciousness. As believers we know that there is a soul which is released at death. The question is: where does the soul go? This book explains quite clearly how others have overcome the forces of darkness to ensure their souls are not captured by them for eternal unhappiness.

It explains the life of the portrayed saints, but it does not teach a lot about the practical ways to defend against the devil's attacks. Only a few mentions about what to do when confronted by the devil and his schemes.
