Works, with one caveat
Besides the fact that this adapter looks nice (shiny, glossy white), it is precisely engineered to click snappily into the USB-C slot. Also, the SD and microSD cards slide in easily and are held firmly. And, of course, it works. I was able to import all the digital photos (JPEG, RAW) on nine 16GB SD cards holding images from my digital camera. My one hesitation is that inserting the SD card requires a change of habit, since the card has to be (in my opinion) upside-down. I expect SD cards to be inserted with the contact edge down, but this unit requires cards to be inserted with the gold contacts facing up. Unfortunately, being aware of this requirement doesn't lead to a facile change of habit. Other than this, I am pleased with this adapter.

This little reader works like a champ! Easily recognized by Win 10 Pro on my new Alienware R3. Yes, you can transfer files between the SDHC and micro cards, as well as to and from the PC (or laptop). 3.1 C pretty well makes this reader as future proof as anything can be. For those of us with no onboard reader, it is a 'must.' Small, lightweight, and well-built, who could ask for more? Cable Matters obviously had this reader constructed to their specifications, as it is the most compactly functional USB reader/writer out there. The embossed case and inclusion of a serial number testify to this not being another re-labeled, mass-produced import. Good things do come from China, and this is one of them. I would buy this again but it will probably never need to be replaced, it looks that fine.

Speed? Well, at USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt capable, MUCH faster than any existing card and when invented, may even become a HS serial port adapter to boot. And speaking of booting, I may try to use an SDHC as an alternate OS intallation. Who (besides The Shadow) knows?

Oh, BTW, you insert the cards face down, with the contacts up. Very thoughtful design because you automatically inspect the contacts for integrity and debris while inserting and removing them. Nice feature, Cable Matters.

Works as advertised: USB 3.0 speeds. So far no problems. (E.g., no "USB device unrecognized")

USB 3.0 is a such a nice speed upgrade over 2.0. I usually get 80-90 (or higher) MB/s transfer speeds, and essentially never less than 35-45 MB/sec. This is as compared to 10-20 MB/sec on USB 2.0.

I like that it only has the two common slot types: SD and micro-SD. That's all I need. The readers with 6 or 10 slots for a card types I never use just look clunky, fragile, and like dust magnets.

Not a huge fan of the short cable, but for some uses, that's preferred, I realize. Anyway, I bought a USB 3.0 extension cable for my application. That has worked fine so far (a few months in). Those USB 3.0 extension cables are pricey though.

I bought this to look at pictures off of my trail cam on my Android phone. The only thing you have to do is remember to plug this into your phone before inserting the SD card. It won't recognise your SD card if it is inserted before you plug it in. (at least not for me) Other than that it works perfectly, feels nice and durable, and does exactly what I needed it to. I tested it right after getting it and was able to look at the pictures from my trail cam on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
This won't work on older phones with the MicroUSB slots, you must have a phone with a USB-C slot, or a computer with one, or an adapter that will allow USB-C devices to plug into MicroUSB or whatever slot your phone has.

EDIT (4 stars): Original review below. After this review, Cable Matters sent me a replacement card reader. After the first few uses, the replacement does not seem to have the same issue. As that was my only problem with the device (it works fantastically otherwise -- high speed, etc.) I've updated this review to 4 stars. Cable Matters should work on quality control to avoid these problems in the future, but I am pleased with the resolution and the product.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (2 stars): I've grown increasingly skeptical of this card reader. I use it on my MacBook Pro. About half the time, works great -- no complaints. But the other half, it randomly ejects/disconnects while reading from my SD card. Sometimes these disconnects happen multiple times in quick succession. I'm very worried about data loss and/or damaging my SD card reader. Not happy.

I have been using this reader for 3 1/2 years now, and from day one to as I am typing, this very second, this reader had performed perfectly, reading consistently at 95% of the speed of the card, or better. The move/copy speed is the straightest line I have seen from ANY device, and normally I am disappointed in USB Type C speeds, I even thought something was wrong with my computer, until I started using this reader. Great job on an ideal product.

I usually don't spring for Amazon products when it comes to tech peripherals since there's so many reputable, established brands in this space, but I'm glad I went for this one. I needed the one day shipping, but the product itself exceeded my expectations as well. It's significantly smaller than I was expecting. Of course there are larger options with additional adapters, such as USB A ports, additional USB C ports, etc. But since my devices are only missing an SD card reader, this is exactly what I needed. It's built out of plastic, so don't have too high of expectations for the build. For plastic, it feels quite solid and substantial, and the cable is thick enough that I don't worry about it bending and fraying. I still keep it in a carrying case just in case, but for the average user the build is more than adequate. It's super easy to use, just plug and play (although the cards go in upside-down for some reason, so don't try and jam it in too hard the wrong way!). Speeds are at, or just below the legacy port built into my old device, so for an external adapter I'm completely fine with the performance. If you don't need additional ports beyond the SDs, don't hesitate to buy this one.

Have to give this a rating of 3.5/5 (i.e. a C (i.e. par (i.e. average))). It gets the job done, the connector feels solid, the materials leave a ton of be desired. Luckily it seems well together put so it won’t fall apart, but the plastics involved feel very hollow, very toy like. Another detail that is a little misleading upon use of it is how the SD card is inserted. One would believe the label of the SD card to match the label of the labeling of the reader, but it is the reverse, so first time users be careful before you shove your SD card in the wrong way, you may break the reader because of the materials used.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8 (2017), works where others fail
Reviewed in Canada on March 2, 2018
This device works very well with the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8 (2017), very stable. Other multi port USB C devices combining SD, micro SD and USB functionality are very flaky, constantly disconnecting from the tablet. Tried two other brands/styles without success. This also works well using an OTG USB C to micro USB adapter for older phones, adapter must be OTG. It also works fine with a USB A adapter connecting to a regular PC. The best part is that you can mount both micro SD and SD cards simultaneously and copy card to card. You can also hot plug the cards, none of this was possible with the other devices.

Honestly I use this purely to check my game cams. I like the dongle feature as its less stress on my phone port. and it's simple enough to stash in my hunting pack. I've used others before but this makes it simple. I bought a couple!
