I like IO Gear stuff, have several things. This one was a fail. Something started rattling loose the first day, and while at a week-long photo shoot in another state, it totally died on me. I have a bag full of card adapters that I have used for the last 14 years, never had one totally fail. Must have just been a bad pick off the line.

Transfer speed slows down significantly with multiple cards

When reading from multiple cards simultaneously the transfer speeds slow down significantly. I bought this especially because it can read multiple cards at once, but that doesn't work like I would expect it to.

The device also gets very hot during transfers.

I'll keep it for now because when reading a single UHS-II SD card the transfer speeds are fast.

I got this because this item's description read that it can do up to 312MB/s Read speeds. I have a UHS-I (A2) Card rated for 160MB/S read but this unit topped at 94MB/s. After I reached out to the manufacturer they confirmed that this reader can only read UHS-I card at Max of 100 MB/S even if your card is rated at higher speeds (i.e. Mine is 160MB/s). You need UHS-II card to get the 312MB/s Read speeds wit this unit. They have updated the description now.

As I need a unit hat can read up to 160 MB/s on a UHS-I card (A2), this unit does not help me. I work with tons of 4K videos so fast read speed is needed. For anyone else not needing "top" speeds, this may still be a great product. Never had any other issues with IOGEAR in the past.

I used this for my Ipad Pro 2018 and it works extremely well (with beta Ipad IOS). It detects my Nikon D800 files perfectly and they transfer over FAST. I dont have significant technical details, but seeing that my photos are about 75-85mb each they transfer over about 1sec each if i sit there and watch them. My complaint would be about the cable (for ipad use). Its not long enough so the device hangs in the air, so i wish it was long enough so it sat on my desk or that there wasnt any cable at all so the device just plugs in and becomes attached to the ipad. This wont be an issue if youre using a laptop.

I had this reader for over a year and didn't pay much attention to it. But I just bought a full size SD card for my camera which is rated at 250MB/s read and 120MB/s write speeds. I noticed UHS-II cards have more contact pins and this IOGear has them as well. That boded well so I connected it to my PC and got full rated speeds on CrystalMark. It works with iPad Pro as well. So I'd say it's a good purchase if you need fast transfer which would be if you're using it for photography/video.

CF card guide is too sloppy. Must take special care when inserting CF cards due to position of pin locations that can miss designated holes in the card and the size of the slot. I bent pins more than once while attempting to insert the CF card. Was able to straighten the pins with a flat tool. I am not sure how long this card reader will last. I have interred these cards into other readers, and into Nikon card slots and have never experienced any issues with bent pins. This device was poorly designed.

I get over 200MB/s read speed from my UHS-II cards. The reader itself is has a subtle, clean design and solid build quality. I just ordered a second one for my desktop computer. I'll also need a USB-C extension cable because the built-in one is very short. Would have been nice if the cable was replaceable, but it's not a big deal.

If you are suing this for CF cards, make sure to be careful. I’ve had to realign the inside “needles” about 2 different times because there is just enough wiggle room for your card to be misplaced. SD and micro SD work fine though. Great purchase
