I don't like purchasing insurance on most items, but I do purchase it for a few items that I feel are worth getting protection for, and Asurion protection came through for me recently on some security cameras that only lasted a little over a year. It was completely hassle free and they provide the return label for the faulty item(s). I immediately received an Amazon gift card for the purchase value of the cameras once the shipping label was scanned by the shipping carrier. Like I said, I highly recommend Asurion protection, as they came through for me with no hassle whatsoever.

Two years and a few weeks ago, I bought a microwave. It dies, just past the 2-year mfr. warranty. But I bought 4-year Asurion Protection. Asurion needed me to ship the microwave oven to them. I found a box large enough (UPS would have charged $67 for one), and Asurion assured me it didn't have to be padded or styrofoamed. Second trip to the UPS store was the charm. Asurion contacted me when they received it, and a couple days later, they emailed me the determination that it can't be fixed.

Remedy?

Asurion could have fixed it, in which case I should have enjoyed the remaining two years of my protection contract.

Asurion could have shipped me a new replacement, in which case I should have enjoyed the remaining two years of my protection contract.

Instead, Asurion cleverly sent me an Amazon gift card for the original purchase price of the oven. I can buy whatever I want with it (on Amazon), and it won't be covered by the remaining two years of my protection contract.

Ah well. $30 (the price of the Asurion protection contract) for two years' use of a microwave oven wasn't doing too badly.

What am I going to do now? Buy another microwave oven with another 4 year contract. Microwave ovens never last 4 years, so I get maybe 2 years, maybe 3 years to use my new oven, and when it breaks I get my money back. All it costs is the price of the Asurion contract.

It's worth it.
