That said, I need to note strongly that this is "cringe humor". What I mean by this is that the entire show is based entirely on gags/situations that made me turn away and cringe (think "There's Something About Mary" or "American Pie"). Like horror films, there is a huge market in the USA for people who like to go to a movie (or watch a show) during which said people are looking away and covering their ears for half the time. I don't dislike the concept of horror movies as a genre, but they just aren't my preferred thing. I should also note this is not a gore/horror fest, I was just using the example to say it's a niche (however large) audience.Let me be clear, this is a COMEDY and very funny.
I only made it through 2 episodes but I can see how a lot of people will love this. Perhaps I have had waaay too many awkward moments with ex-girlfriends and on first dates that this concept doesn't appeal to me. Either way, the acting is terrific and the writing is better than anything I can think of that comes out of the US. There were times when I genuinely laughed out loud but some of the situations just got a little to close to home for me in a really embarrassing way, which says more about me than the show :P . The episodes aren't more than 30 mins so give it a shot, the first 5 mins of episode 1 pretty much set the tone for whether you will like it or not.
The thing is this show is probably more honest about those "perfect" families that look so good to outsiders. Something a guy she's dating even comments on at one point and she, much like me, just gives him a look like, "Yeah? If you only knew how totally fracked these people all are you'd be running away screaming." Or at least that's what I'd was thinking, and she probably was too.
I won't go into it any further or any spoilers except to say what starts out as a bright, funny lark of a show turns dark and then darker still as the cracks begin to show. You are by turns infuriated and laughing at her and with her, and by the end you just hope she'll simply disappear into the London fog leaving her absolutely terrible damaged beyond all belief family and friends and just get out of there, find someplace to breath, and repair her life.
I'm hoping for more and I'd like to see her find a good place for herself, but since this isn't a show that pretends in Hollywood endings we may not get that. Instead what we will get is probably the sort of raw honesty and the light and dark that life really is made up of in the form of some amazingly talented people telling the story that people all around us live every single day of their lives.
And I think we need more of that, so I'm going to pray for a Season 2 and now find anything that Phoebe Waller-Bridge has ever starred in or done, because I am a complete and total fan of hers now. Something that just doesn't happen too often.
Seeing roles like this for women, written by women, is amazing. Some people are drawing comparisons to Girls or other stories that have female leads written by women. But in reality, I see no comparison. If I had to compare it I would say it is a bit like more honest fare such as: You are the Worst or Bare, if females had the more dominant roles in these shows.
A dramedy that tugs at your heart and your funny bone. Apparently, she created the character on a dare for a stand-up idea. Which she performed then performed live. She flushed out the character more and it became a story that she felt would suit the television audience. The character breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to you. She tells you the story of her life. Somehow through the first person narrative, it makes you feel closer to her as if she were a friend revealing secrets. Yet, as the story unfolds you begin to wonder about the bravado, the self defense mechanisms, and patina of humor that is cast over a deeply sad, flawed, funny yet broken person. The humor in no way suffers from the deeper revelations. It only makes the show more heart felt and rare. You learn to love this flawed person just as we learn to love all the flawed people in our lives. Give the show a chance so you don't miss out something truly rare and wonderful.
If you like this show I would highly suggest you check out Crashing. Crashing is another Phoebe Waller-Bridge production in which she stars and writes the story. It has a larger supporting cast and the same frank forward humor. If you have an account it is streaming on Netflix for free at the time of writing this.
