A Rambling Man: A Classic Western Adventure (Lucas Cain Book 1) Kindle Edition

Bestselling author Robert Vaughan is back with another riveting adventure in this 2024 Independent Press Award Winner—sure to please fans of all ages.

Captured in the last year of the Civil War, Lucas Cain is a POW in the infamous Andersonville prison. There, he learns how to survive the cruelty of the Confederate guards and the perfidy of others who are prisoners themselves.

When the war ends, he and almost 1,500 others crowd aboard the riverboat
Sultana, which has a capacity of just under 400 passengers. When tragedy strikes, Lucas finds himself further adrift. Returning home to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, he becomes a police officer, where he finds an unexpected love interest in a journalist who works for the Cape Girardeau newspaper.

But as Lucas finds himself no longer able to remain in Cape Girardeau, he begins a western drift. Rambling without a specific destination and becoming a bounty hunter, he ventures into the untamed West…where the call of the open road just may lead him to wander forever.

I liked the many layers in this story and look forward to the next installment. One sour note was that much was made of one of the romantic relationships Lucas Cain had. I was surprised by how the author handled it. On the positive side the author did a great job of weaving important characters from early in the story back in along the way.

Loved the main character Lucas Cain and the well developed, fast moving plot which truly deserves a 5 star rating. For me this was a really good reading choice, however from time to time you'll need to look over the simplified sentence structure which makes it almost read like a children's book, thus the 4 stars. Please don't let that discourage you from enjoying The Rambling Man.

Good westerns feature footloose wandering cowboys and this one is up to par! Lucas Cain is a very likable adventurer recovering from a nasty stint as a POW and a tragic marriage. His adventures on the road are varied, exciting and interesting!

Vaughan has done it again! Steady, thoughtful story line with a hero, damsels in distress with plenty of minor characters to fill in the gaps.

Like many Kindle "books" this could have used an editor. Some glaring internal inconsistencies. There is virtually no description of the natural environment. The West is beautiful, and writers like Louis Lamour show it to the reader. Finally, there is too much dialog that does not advance the action. Good writers keep the language spare without a lot of unnecessary chit chat. All this said, I still gave it three stars.

A Rambling Man is an ongoing ramble of small episodes with repetitive narratives that culminate in one much larger final chapter! The settings lack accurate historical details in the small western towns visited, the many saloons (where considerable actions occurs ) or even the shops or businesses that feature in the narrative. Meanwhile even the landscapes are virtually ignored! Thus the novel does not develop the mood, atmosphere or complexity that the better western texts achieve.
