Fr. Gabriele Amorth: The Official Biography of the Pope's Exorcist Kindle Edition

“Among men, a special role is played by exorcists. They are like the tips of diamonds in this army that counters evil with good. They are priests chosen to drive out the extraordinary presence of Satan and his army.”

—Fr. Gabrielle Amorth

When Fr. Gabriele Amorth passed away on September 16, 2016 at the age of ninety, he had given everything to Christ and His Church. He performed as many as twelve exorcisms in a day. He faithfully served sixty-nine years in the Pauline religious order, sixty-two as a priest, and thirty years as the pope’s exorcist.

In this official biography, Father Amorth’s extraordinary life is revealed for the first time in English. In these pages, you will learn about a humble priest who initially refused the appointment of exorcist. You will discover how this spiritual son of Saint Padre Pio trained to be an exorcist and the details of his first exorcism. How he single handedly spearheaded the consecration of Italy to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He later founded what became the International Association of Exorcists (IAE), the only organization of its kind recognized by the Church.

Father Amorth once said about exorcisms, “The battle can last for hours. And it almost never ends with deliverance. It takes years to free a possessed person. Many years. Satan is difficult to defeat.”

Although the world knows him only as an exorcist, he was so much more. His profound prayer life, his simplicity, his love for poverty, his sense of humor, his fearlessness, his friendship with many saints, and his esteemed love for Our Lady set him apart. Because of Our Lady’s protection, he once declared, “I always say that it is the devil who is afraid of me.”

Everyone is called to do battle with devil, but only few people are given the power over the demons. And “despite the fatigue, disappointments, and losses, he would never retreat from the enemy.” Here, you will find the remarkable story of the most renowned exorcist of the last century, a warrior for Christ. “Those who knew him, already consider him a saint.”

At the crossroads of profound spirituality and undeniable reality stands a towering figure: Father Gabriele Amorth. Domenico Agasso’s masterful biography, "Fr. Gabriele Amorth: Rome’s Exorcist," unravels the enigma that was Fr. Amorth, an exorcist who dedicated his life to wrestling with the unseen, working in the shadows where many would fear to tread.

This isn’t merely a book about exorcism or the devil. It’s a pilgrimage into the heart of a man whose faith was as immovable as mountains, and whose mission was crystal clear – to save souls from the grasp of darkness. As Agasso poignantly details, the journey of becoming Rome's premier exorcist wasn’t built upon mere folklore or religious fanaticism. It was rooted in an unwavering belief that the presence of evil is as real as the air we breathe. For Fr. Amorth, acknowledging the devil’s existence was synonymous with affirming the existence of God. It’s a brave standpoint, one that challenges contemporary secular thought.

Agasso paints a vivid portrait of Amorth's beginnings, from his time as a seasoned political organizer and military officer in World War II to his pivotal consecration of Italy to Mary in 1958. His multi-faceted life trajectory showcased a man not just of religious rigor but also of diverse talents and deep humanity.

This biography draws back the curtain on the misunderstood realm of exorcism. Through the life of Fr. Amorth, readers are given a lens to view the intricate balance between the physical and spiritual realms. But more than the exorcisms, what stands out is Fr. Amorth’s saintly demeanor, his compassionate approach, and his unwavering conviction in the presence of the divine. This was a priest who walked among saints, a beacon of hope for those trapped in spiritual torment.

Yet, the narrative goes beyond the personal. It confronts a bigger dilemma – the skepticism of the modern Church. With one in three theologians doubting the devil's existence, Agasso brings to light the crisis of faith confronting modern religious institutions. In a world increasingly detached from spirituality, where moral relativism reigns supreme, Fr. Amorth's clarion call was to return to the Gospel in its entirety. This was a man unafraid to point out the church's shortcomings, all while embodying its ideals.

The biography also delves into the broader societal implications of this detachment from faith. In an age where good and evil are seen as outdated constructs, Agasso reflects on the rise of alternative spiritual practices and highlights the dangers of a society that dismisses the dichotomy of good and evil.

Agasso's portrayal of Fr. Amorth is meticulous, encompassing every shade of his personality – from the dedicated exorcist and the challenging character to the great joker with an impeccable sense of humor. Yet, at the heart of it all, he remained a simple priest with a celestial mission, driven by prayer and action.

To say that "Fr. Gabriele Amorth: Rome’s Exorcist" is enlightening would be an understatement. It’s a beacon, illuminating the path for those curious about the spiritual battles that rage unseen. Agasso’s narrative resonates deeply, beckoning believers and skeptics alike to ponder the complexities of faith and the enduring power of dedication to a divine calling.

For anyone intrigued by the cosmic struggle between light and darkness or those seeking insight into a faith that can move mountains, this book isn’t just recommended; it’s essential. It reminds us of a profound truth: The surest way to defeat darkness is by radiating light, and the path to sainthood is one paved with unwavering faith and devotion.

I only knew of Fr. Amorth as an exorcist. I didn't know anything about his life other than that. I also didn't know much about Italian history, and that Fr. Amorth fought for the partisans (anti-fascists) and was involved in rebuilding Italy after WWII. He became a priest instead of entering politics. The book explains how he entered the St. Paul Order, and was close to the founder. The order is dedicated the evangelization through media, and Fr. Amorth became a writer, editor for a Marian magazine. He was also a great organizer and helped organize the consecration of Italy to Our Lady. Then he finally became an exorcist, which the book describes in detail. Definitly recommend.

I thought it would be a study about dealing with the devil and cases involving him. But it's mainly a story of the life of exorcist and his life events. It sites the people he knew and the relationships he developed with his order and the church.

Someone once asked him ARE YOU NOT AFRAID OF THE DEVIL? His response was: The devil is afraid of me because through the official prayers of exorcism I expel him from the possessed. His several books on his experiences have become bestsellers.
